Local tracks want to know your Personal Transponder #???

I must be an idiot, I don't know what that means??

When I used to race, they would just want your freq.#

well, I guess this is a fairly new thing.

It's the AMB system for lap timing.

Most clubs have the ones you put in the cars, usually mounted with a body clip to either the bodyshell or a mount somewhere on the chassis.

The personal ones, or PT's are smaller and plug into your receiver and have a unique number so you never have to change them.

check it out here:

Next to the Spectrum system - this is by far one of the most brilliant products ever for R/C racers....just makes racing so much easier.

Agreed Darryn. I've got one in each of my race cars and reckon they're brilliant. No more forgetting to put the handout transponder in the car, and no more being late to the start line due to the previous guy still having it in his car. One you've used them you wouldn't want to go back.

It is starting to get quite common at large clubs in the uK for clubs just to rely on personal transponders and not provide handout ones. If the club bought the old AMB automatic system (for several thousand pounds!) they will have discovered that their old transponders will not work with the latest AMB system. Rather than spend a couple of thousand pounds on a new set they are just getting their members to buy personal transponders (at £60 a time![xx(]) It's also a lot less hassle than trying to keep track of 20 transponders.

Usually the club should be able to provide you with a transponder to start with if they don't have handouts.

If you need one they are only available from BBK

Alternatively the club might be able to sell you one at a reduced price.

When would AMB start using "RFID" technology? [:P]

PTs are nice but they still need a powersource.

RFIDs don't need power and are also read by an inductive loop of wire.

id="quote">id="quote">I wondered about this; an RFID based system would also mean that the price of personal transponders would be slashed (an RFID tag is a generic item and therefore would cost a lot less than the £60 charged by the current company which has the monopoly over the product!). I think it's more a marketing than technological issue, as there is already a huge user base of people owning the AMB personal, which means that a new system would have to persuade all of those people to change over, all the clubs to change their systems, and the BRCA and other r/c racing organisations would have to adopt the technology.

RFID is used for timing events like the London Marathon and other sporting events, the runners have a tag strapped to their ankle. I think it would be a great way to run timing, but doubt if it will be seen in r/c in the near future due to the saturation on the market by AMB based systems.
