Anybody bought a good one lately?

I'm getting fed up with keep buying cans of paint, so what's a good one, and are they more expensive for paints than a similar capacity aerosol?

Any other 'peripheral' advice would be welcome

I bought an airbrush from the bay, a user called follymodels

I got it for £9.49 including the post on a buy it now on sunday, did the paypal thing and it arrived this morning. Quick or what.

Anyway, the paints I use are the little humbrol cans (remeber building model planes as a kid with them, those ones) and thinners 50/50 mix. I don't think it works out much cheaper, but the finish you get is miles better due to the control you have on paint delivery etc.

The only problem I have had with this airbrush was that the pickup pipe was a little too long, its only a plastic pipe so I trimmed the end off, the pipe kept 'clinging' to the side of the bottle and not allowing any paint up the tube.

I would recommend an airbrush over cans anyday.....

Hi,

I use a Badger one and find it ok. I managed to get a compressor cheap from Do It All and have had no problems other than my own capability/experience issues. I used to use cans of propellant but found the pressure inconsistent....

Invest in a moisture trap to stop getting water droplets spray onto the work piece and spoil it.

Quality of finish is finer than with a can and can be controlled much better, however the preparation is 99% of the job and spraying 1% (or something like that). I have seen excellent bodies done from cans as from brush.

Although there is the big outlay at first I would opt for the brush anyday. I have not bothered with comparing costs on bottle vs can for paints.

I have the paasche millenium double action air brush http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXDD41&P=7

It's pretty inexpensive and works well. I was able to buy an air compressor at a local garage sale for $40. what's better? An air brush Versus a spray can of paint depends on the quality of the paint your using. I have been very happy with Tamiya TS mettalic paints.

Having an airbrush allows you to go to an automotive paint shop to get the really nice mixes of paint.

I have a Badger 150-5 airbrush that comes with various nozles that allows you to either spray a wide, medium or fine area(adjustable spray area on each nozle)to the point where you can literally spray a line 1mm thick if you want!

It was about £150, but boy it was worth every penny as the control you have is amazing.[:D]

Can you run a hobby airbrush on a normal air compressor meant for real power tools? Are there adapters available (in the US)? Can the large compressors be turned down enough to not damage a small airbrush?

Thanks

No worries, all you need to do is buy a regulator(preferably one with a water trap built in) and then turn it down to required pressure and away you go[:D]

I have always used a Badger brush, I recently changed the tip/needle for a fine spray instead of medium for spraying scale military models (Tamiya of Course). Cheapest place I know is Hannants at Lowestoft. www.hannants.co.uk

Cheers
