Just thinking of my 1st rc car...

I remember when about 5 years ago my uncle gave me his Scorcher to get me started in R/C. I had little money but wanted to get it going. The radio box and back cage were smashed to pieces but he had a NIB complete radio box and NIB black cage. Well, i installed them, added my dads old Futaba radio gear (again NIB) to the radio tray. I bought a stick pack battery and found it did not fit. Now here is the 1st sad thing, you may want to stop reading at this point, i took my hack saw and cut a piece out of the side to allow the end of the pack to stick out as it was too long!!!!!!!

Sad thing number 2: "how do i get the motor out?" was my 1st thought after the radio tray. (I had no idea of cars or anything like this you must realise and had no instruction book). My answer was my trusted hacksaw which cut nicely through the cage side. (i was planning on glueing it back after).

I now have a deep appreciation of all vintage and rc cars thanks to those days. When i think now of how rare they are, especially that new radio box, it makes me sad.

Never mind, now i am restoring and collecting these cars and my hacksaw has been placed on a high shelf [:D]

I am now kind of glad he never gave me his NIB Scorcher, NIB Rough Rider body, NIB scorcher and RR tyre sets, decals, rubber pieces and bearings, who knows what i would have done with them. And yes, he still has them safely hidden away.

Well, thats my story, how about all of you?

My first Sand Scorcher went through a lot.

I remember trying to drive it down own stairs on numerous occassions ir rarely got past the third step before rolling/crashing its way down the next 20 or so.

One of the paint jobs for it was done with tin of standard wall emulsion (Magnolia I think)

And finally i fitted with a brand new RR body only to promptly smash it to bits while trying to recreate the barrel roll out as seen in the James bond movie.

Stop it! Stop it! You're making me cry.

I have to confess to cutting up an absoloutely immaculate Frog body shell up so it fitted on another buggy. I hate myself to this day for doing it.

I also wrecked a lovely Rough Rider in a local BMX park by driving up and down the ramps, pits etc. Great fun though.

A lot of these cars would still be around and in excellent condition if they were owned by girls - boys are just naturally destructiveicon_smile_evil.gif

"boys are just naturally destructive"

That would be my best friend 15 odd years ago. Lets just say, 'take 1 Fast Attack Vehicle and a can of petrol and drive it down the street' and I'll let you think what happened next.8-picture.gif

And then I woke up! and it was all a dreamicon_smile_sad.gif

I haven't had that many cars, so no real horror stories.

I do regret how much abuse my Lunchbox got though. I's quite sad now. The body has long since been smashed and discarded. To make matters worse, I swapped the wheels and tyres with someone for a set of Blackfoot ones. What was I thinking! I thought it looked better at the time.

I did have gret fun wrecking it though.

Blackfoot body + 4 linked Black cat bangers = black sooty mess icon_smile_dead.gif

Note: The bangers were sourced whilst on a school trip to France (along with some adult playing cards) icon_smile_blush.gif and were as powerful as Semtex!!

Its safe to say the model rocket engines + Tamiya Hornet = 1st time driving a tamiya car.... on fire. We had exhaust cones on the engines and everything was fine, til the parachute charge went off and blew the front off the body.

We did drive it off the roof, it didn't fly very well and

lawn caught on fire.

2nd dumb thing... buddy tried to play chicken with a new rc-10 and a BMW. End result lots and lots of sparks going up the street. Here's the best part we went back to the LHS and said the the MSC stuck and they gave us a new metal chassis. <--- LSH don't do that anymore.

3rd dumb thing... this time in the world of racing. In fact this was my first and last attempt at racing. I took a hornet, a trinity monster mash, and a MSC. I didn't do very well in fact I cracked the chassis of another guys falcon. The plastic bushings didn't survive I wish somebody would've told me about BBs -DOH

Now on to the world of childhood RC perceptions. See if you can track the logic on this.

We thought a Futuba FX-10 was a great car, yet a striker was a big pos.

A blackfoot w/clodbuster tires was just as good as a clodbuster.

We couldn't understand why a grasshopper cant keep up with an RC-10. What the badword is a thundershot and who would name it that.

Who would want to spend $244.00 on a NIB Bruiser. <---Double DOH.

When i was like 7 -8 me and a friend were drving his Bros Audi Quatto that hed gave to my friend.

Well as its an offroader we thought why not make some jumps.

So with all jumps made from wood and mud we started abusing the audi seeing who go the higher and furthest each time.

Unfortionly by the end it had been rolled so many times the body had cracks in the front and rear (Each corner :D )

Paint had flacked off and even some on the rooof Argghhhhhhh

He still has to this day but wont sell :D

I had an RC Toyota Off roader thingy....a long while back....had fake spare wheel on back. Anyways was driving this thing around on a very large balcony area which had a 15 foot drop.....

Thing went out of control, 2 front wheels went under guard rail as did about 99% of back wheels.....only thing saving it from becoming a lemming was spare wheel jamming under rail....a big phew there I can tell ya.

LOL Netsmith. Fortunately, I had already got the firework/toy car experiments out of the way before I got my first r/c.

I could perhaps have mentioned the time I got my Mardave Mini run over by a double decker bus... (it was interference, I tell you!)

I never really regretted that though, 'cause it was pretty funny. Believe it or not, the car survived reletively intact. A new body and a hammer to straighten out the bumper brackets and it was fine. Except for the RX, which came out pretty two dimensional. It was one I had borrowed off my brother too (oops). He saw the funny side eventually.

Well, the most stupid thing my little annoying brother did, was throwing rocks at my King Blackfoot. It's went out of control at top speed (his fault!), while driving over a bridge with water running under it.... I couldn't see the car anymore. When I wanted to throw my brother in the **** river to get the car, I noticed it hanging on with only 1 real wheel (the right I think). I carefully grabbed my car and it was OK. Only my brother got himself a big kick in the ***. icon_smile_evil.gif That'll teach him... icon_smile.gif

Other annoying thing is that little annoying kids spit on my King Blackfoot or pulliong off the antenna. Again, one kick against a little butt solved everything... icon_smile_wink.gificon_smile_evil.gif Don't feel sad for those little ******** since they're only dumb and annoying anyway. Also running my hovercraft will scare them off, especially when using a slightly damaged propellor icon_smile_evil.gif Good for them they're smart enough not to put their little skinny fingers in it... icon_smile_wink.gif I always make sure the soccerfield is ***-free before running my cars there, who the h*ll is going to play soccer on a soccerfield if you can drive your car on it? icon_smile_tongue.gif It's pavement btw, no grass. Still wish they left it a muddy grassfield... icon_smile_sad.gif

Reading the rest of the posts I'm the most adult person here, the only stupid idea I ever had was sawing my Holiday Buggy's thub chassis to make a Messerschmitt 3 wheel thing of it...good thing at least I have common sense... icon_smile_wink.gificon_smile.gif

Oh yeah, when I was driving my Fighter Buggy a few years ago, my big brother said: "Look! a car!" I said "Yeah, mine's nice isn't it?" Then I ran it under the 1:1 car my brother was mentioning, I really thought he mentioned mine.... icon_smile.gif Good thing I ran it straight to the middle, else it would have been pretty 2-dimensional.... icon_smile_shock.gif Was great fun after all.... icon_smile_wink.gif

One of the many stupid things that springs to mind was when my mate and I were into 1/10 circuit cars , I had a preditor (I think that was what it was called) with a 15 double (it was 1989) . the main problem was finding somewhere to run it so we decided that the main road would be best !!!!! a combination of it being dark , high speed and tunnel vision meant that it went head on underneath a car that was going down the road . I remember the guy in the car going totaly mad and me saying sorry about 50 times .

cheers Alan

One of the funniest ones I remember was back when I had my original Sand Scorcher. I had 2 friends who owned an SS and an FR and we used to go trash about in this little piece of ground. So, we go up there 1 day and are just messing about when my friend with the SS thinks it would be fun to drive through a little puddle....

Unknown to him the puddle was about 3 feet deep !! so, he drives right on in and suddenly all you can see is the aerial !!!

Panic sets in, he's got his socks and shoes off ready to wade in to the rescue, me and my other friend are killing ourselves laughing, when he suddenly thinks to himself, I wonder if it still works? Hits the throttle and it drives out, totally none the worse for it's deep sea adventures!! too funny....

Here's another little one.... (I got lots, been doing this a while...)

agin though, not me, but a fellow racer when we were all new to racing back in the mid 80's.

With the new stock motors at the time, we were all told to run them in first by waterdipping, I'm sure those of you who race know what I'm talking about, but if you don't then basically you connect up your motor to a battery and dunk it into a sink full of water. (If you want to know more on the hows and whys of this drop me a line..)

So, this friend of mine buys a nice shiny new motor trackside and goes into the toliets to water dip it, 1 problem no plug in the sink... no problem he thinks I'll just use the toilet bowl. so, a couple of flushes later he's ready to dip it, connects it up, sticks it in the water and whooooosh, it flies off up round the U bend never to be seen again !!!! the look on his face was priceless !!!

My story is more tragic than anything (now that I collect anyway !)

A few years ago - the wife and I were "cleaning" out underneath the house.........well - as you can imagine - I had a bit of stuff under there - and to cut a long story short - the things that went to the tip that day in the trailer were :

1 running Blazing Blazer

1 Williams fw107

1 original RC10

2 frogs

heaps of old racing parts n peices of my old Rough Rider RCH racing chassis......

Now that I look back - what a tragic, STUPID day for me - then again in my defence - I was a mad keen racer at this time - and had no time for "projects" - or anything that did not win me races............

oh - and the fact that the wife had to be kept happy too !! :D

Cheers

Ive been in the drink with my rough rider as well. To cut a long story short, mechanical speed control, out of range, run away car, 3ft deep pond...

Still worked but was slightly damp icon_smile_big.gif

My (non)-moment of glory was in a Tamiyacup (gt) race. Got TQ and lined up on no1 grid position!!! Beep Beep Beep - GO! and too out the cars in position 3,5,7 BEHIND ME!!! Umm yep you gessed it Assembled the endbell and wires on the MOD motor wrong way round!!!! Luckly very little damage to the other cars. PPl had such a laugh that the race was aborted and restarted 10 mins later.

It is not exactly my but worth mentioning I believe

. . . . and then there was mom. When I got married 8 years ago . I went home to collect my R/C stuff and didn't find my Ford Ranger anymore . . Asking my mom what she did with the car she answered. Oh I've threw it away when I cleaned out your old room . . . . . . ****.

The car was 100% complete and the only thing wrong with it was a small crack in the body.

when i moved out of my parent's house in 1997 . . . i binned it :)

I think I can match that - if not top it ;)

If it wasn't bad enough that I once binned a Willy's Wheeler, I also binned an Avante :P

Before I get any death threats, I'd like to point out that although the 'Wheeler could have been restored to a reasonable standard with a bit of filler and respray, at the time RC cars really had no value, so why keep them? The Avante though was an utter dog.
