A mate of mine saw my 959, and went on ebayt for ideas... he never had rc as a kid but was a keen modeller, and he ended up buying a King Tiger 1 Full Production.

It arrived yesterday... from a charming seller with a rather dubious name "waffen-ss"... not sure about the pc of that! Excellent ebayer though...

Anyway, it is AMAZING! Quite staggeringly complex and so beautifully detailed...

I now want one rather badly. Only thing is I know nothing about my options...

I want one that moves the turrets / guns etc -

so my question to anybody who knows is... what's hot and what are the options out there... which ones are most fun to build? which ones run the best? any advice or opinions gratefully received!

Thanks

Hi Noel

I like the new King Tiger the best.It has the same sound unit as the Tiger 1 and does all of the same things. It is also the Biggest, and in my opinion the most powerful.

The Pershing is also very good and seems to be the most popular.I think its OK but i think that the cannon sounds a bit naff.It is the best as far as off road goes and as far as i am aware has the most ground clearance. It also has all of the sounds etc plus head and tail lights inc brake light! and you have to "put it in gear" to run! If you look under the winter drive post you will see a video of my pershing running

You already know about the Tiger1

The Sherman is also a very good tank,It also has lights etc, however i found it to be to light to get over some things. There is no recoil on the gun but there is on the hull itself.Nice to drive too

At the end of the day they are all fun to build, and all sound excellent.May be a good idea to buy from Japan as even though you will have to pay import tax it will be alot cheaper.Look on Ebay.com

Hope this helps

Regarding the running gear. Im also looking into buying a tank. My question concerns the power of each model. Are there any modles that are equipped with twin 540 power? I think some older versions are single 540 power. How well do the older model gearbox and clutch sets hold up? Do the twin 380 models have sufficient power to be really fun and versatile? Can the twin 380 models be upograded to twin 540? Yes, Ideally I want twin 540 power.

Ok fellow tankers I will try to answer your questions:

1st on overview of the kits:

56010: Full Option Tiger I : It can shoot with a strobe light, the main gun recoils, gun goes up and down, and turret goes left and right. When it drives the engine will rev. It is the second biggest kit in the tamiya line and the second most complex.

56014: Full Option Sherman : The sherman has been around since 1974. Early version have a single clutch driven 540 gear case. The latest vesion 56014 has new twin 380 ball-raced gear box. The full option does everything the tiger can except gun recoil.(105mm howitzers dont recoil). This kit is the easiest to build. MAKE SURE YOU BUY 56014 not 56005.

56016: Full Option Pershing M26: The Pershing is the most complex model of the bunch. Space is limited in the hull so you need to route the wires carefully. Does everything a tiger can. Has torsion bar suspensions with twin 380 gearboxes that are routed to sub-gearboxes. This is the fastest of the DMD tanks. NOTE: the old clutch version of the sherman is faster. When driven you can here the tank tred "clank"

56018: King Tiger Production Turret: As with the sherman the KT has been with tamiya since the dawn of time. Older versions suffered with broken pinons and thrown tracks. However the new DMD gearboxes and resin tracks seemed to fix it. While not as sure-footed as the pershing -it's driving ability is a close second. This is the biggest of the tamiya tanks. Infact both German tanks are bigger than the US (Must be a case of P______ Envy) Unlike the Pershing -you can fit a small plastic army into the KT. The KT will do everything a Pershing and Tiger can do. When you turn on the reciever and then the tank it will do a "crank startup". If you turn on the tank then reciever it will do an "Electric Startup" Both of these are recorded off of the last KT in the world.

2nd just some more info:

From a historical standpoint: The tiger was the best german tank ever. While the KT was an improvement -it suffered from late WWII production due to allied bombing. The Pershing was the first of the modern tanks seeing action all the way through Korea. While underpowered with it's V8 w/speed governer, it's armor and 90mm gun was more than a match for the germans. The Sherman was a joke -- called a medium tank -- it really was a light tank. Started out with a 75mm gun and thin armor = big time tiger fodder. The high profile caused it to stand out. It's ironic that tamiya used the 105mm version -it was intended as a troop support.

For an RC tank standpoint: Get two tanks trust me on that. Getting the tamiya Battle System and watching the tank fights is unreal. Tamiya doesn't lie when they say they have a 30m range. When a tank get's hit, you can hear the incoming shell on the damgaed tank. The MF(Multi Function Unit) will reduce the tanks speed and change the sound of the motor with every bit.

If you're into rc tank battles:id="red"> The pershing is the best tank. Lower profile, better torque-top speed gives it a clear advantage over the other tanks. If you just want a Full Option tank:id="blue"> Go with either of the german tanks. German armor is just too cool IMO. I've always loved a tiger I with a panzer grey paintjob. If you're new to tank models or on a budget:id="green">Go with either a King Tiger or Sherman if you're new to models. Budget wise the Sherman is the least expensive.

If you're looking for an RC tank that runs like an RC car - it wont happen. The old clutch 540s, or older twin 380's will fall apart. The boxes on the old King Tiger flat out suck. These tanks will take a pounding -but they should be treated like a static model first and an RC car second. The tiger and pershing are plenty fast. The sherman is fast(make sure you go BB's with it.) Remember fast in a tank sense. If you want a fast tank go get the Kyosho nitro bizzard. There is not enough room to get 540's on to the dmd gear boxes.

Here are some links and places to buy:

http://www.dansdata.com/pershing.htm Review of the Pershing. PLEASE NOTE THAT DAN'S SHERMAN REVIEW IS FOR THE OLDER SHERMAN.

Buying a tank: If you go ebay you can go to hong kong dealers. Pershings/TigerI can be found for around $450USD + 70-90 USD shipping. King Tigers can be found for $440 + 70-90. Sherman's can be found for $440 as well.

The best US dealer is Dave www.dave4what.com . If you live in the US it's either the same or cheaper to go through him. Sherman's are $409 + 30 shipping. $549 +40 for TigerI. $499 +30 for Pershing. $525 +40 for King Tiger. If you go through tower you will pay $699 for the Tiger I and $499 for the Sherman.

Sorry about any spelling errors and feel free to email or post if you have more quesitons.

Thanks for all the great info! Im not actually wanting a fast tank, I just figured twin 540 power would offer better climbing, quicker acceleration, and of course, faster speed. I think a full option pershing is in my near future.

Posted

UPDATE: I played with a Full-Option King Tiger today. I must say that I like it quite a bit. I did run it off road but the speed is faster than I thought. It ran a tad bit slower than my pershing. The only bummer was the lack of headlights. Other than that a cool kit by far.

Posted

While it gives the tiger more climbing power the fault is in the torsion tread setup. The king tiger is to scale speed its just the tiger that's too fast.

Posted

What is a torsion tread setup? My King Tiger is not the new version. It was a static model with a Porsche turret that I modified to a full option version. It uses the Tiger 1 drives which is why it is also too fast. Its good to see that the new full option King Tiger solved the problem.

The problem with the tiger is that the new dmd gear box caused the tank to be too fast. In the old King Tiger the combo of the old dmd-gearbox and metal treads, caused the tank to strip one of the pinon gears. On the new tamiya tanks - the new resin tracks seem to grab the ground better -but- slip on the wheels acting like a clutch that allowed the dmd-motors to rev and thus the tank would go faster. On the pershing they solved this problem with two metal rings the go inbetween the spindles and the tred. On top of that the Pershing has two sub-gearboxes. I think the new king tiger also has these corrections made to it while the tiger does not. Without the subgearboxes.

Hey guys,

Some fantastic info in this thread, thank you. I just wondered if anybody has heard anybody talking about the possibility of an RC Bradley or M1 Abrams? I used to drive the BFV (Bradley Fighting Vehicle ) or CFV (Cavalry Fighting Vehicle) for a spell while I was in the Army for a few years. A very interesting machine indeed, but as an armored recon scout, there was nothing very stealthy about this thing- the high profile and the fact that you could just track the exhaust belches as one would navigate terrain, made for a very easy target. Anyways, yaddy yaddy yadda! I bought the 21st Century Toys toy Bradley a couple years ago for my son, and have always thought how awesome it would be if they made one of these radio controlled. The problem is, if 21st century made one rc, it would not be anything next to the quality of Tamiya. Thanks.

It would be nice to see some not so famous tanks in r/c like the Sturmgeschutz, T-34, Jagdpanther, Cromwell, Panzer IV, Matilda, Sturmtiger, Cruiser tank, T-55 or maybe an A.A. half-track or something.

Still can't decide which one to get!

How much difference in gear ratios between the two Tigers? Does it make any real difference?

How offroadable are they?

What sort of run times can be achieved?

A lot of questions, but a lot of money too. [;)]

Do you like: Japan MB tank Type 90 or Leopard A3 or M1 Abram?

All shoot plastic BB up to 25 m (per factory claim)?

Cost around 20% of Tamiya's 1/16 scale?

RC (not by wire)operated, turret turns 350deg.,

Gun up/down, dual motor drive, and quite detailed?

Comes with rubber track, but plastic link track option

available?

By Marui?

Cheaper make, (made in Korea), available at 1/2 the

price, quality is not as good but has lights

Down side: at 1/24 scale

RC range is limited, like 10 to 15 ft.

So...for the price of one Tamiya 1/16 without radio equipment you can own all 3 modern tanks...and comes with its own radio.

The cheaper make is Hen Long, and that's what ebay is flooded with. If you are really interested, be aware of the differences and take a look at MaruiTankGroup at Yahoo: http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/MaruiTankGroup

Another down side: NO proportional control. Features 3 speed forward and speed reverse + 2 turning speeds. Turns in place possible.

My Marui Abrams desert camouflage with separate link upgrade tracks and rubber pads installed:

Though very nice but after seeing the 1/6 scale price..$250.00-$300.00 for Wild One, $400.00 - $699.00 for an Avante, $650.00 - $950.00 for a 3 spd...they are cheap and here I am telling myself no more Tamiya...but just this very last one and no more...but that 3 last one ago...

LOL, yeah, I checked out the UK dealer and they are charging £3500 for a fully built and equipped RTR 1/6th challenger. That is quite alot of money!! Could always sell my wifes car though and get one instead?! [8D]

Tower is showing the Leopard A26 coming in at $939.00. So the other tank sellers should be about $150 less. Also www.backyardarmor.com has come out with their resin Easy8 Sherman upgrade.

The new Tamiya 1/16 Leopard tank has twin 540 motors! [8D]

Those 1/6th scale tanks are incredible [:0] I noticed that one of the models weighs 100KG. Imagine terrorizing the neighborhood dogs and cats with that thing [;)]
