I just sniped my first auction ever and to my suprise it was a success. Minutes after the auction i get a email form some guy saying there are names for people like me and he was gonna turn me into ebay? He said i have done this to him before, well this is the first Tamiya auciton i have won. I was shocked and kind of *******ed.

I have recieved a few letters from angry bidders I have sniped. I just ignore them. That way they don't know whether I got the mail or not. It leaves them in limbo.

I dont think that they can turn you in. I had someone threaten that to me and then herd nothing about it again. I dont think ebay like sniping bids and I remember reading somewhere that they are looking into ways of stopping it but at the moment Im fairly sure that a bid is a legally binding contract.

Also if the other guy has been too abusive you could report him to ebay lol

I just recently got a rude email from a sore loser. And by the way that is all that bidder can be is a sore loser. He can complain to eBay but there is nothing eBay can do to you as you violated no rules. Some may consider sniping rude but that's just too bad. Myself, I'd tell him (or her) to go pound sand up their pattootie.

I have heard eBay was going to ban the 'automatic sniper' services but I still cannot see how you could be banned from bidding at the last second. Afterall they set the timespan of the auction. And the higher the item sells for makes eBay even richer as the final value fee is percentage based. If they were to ban sniping they should just declare the auction closed at what time before it is suposed to close? Hrumph. Sounds silly to me.

There are a couple of long and interesting threads about sniping going on here already so I won't go into my previously stated position on the subject.

Cheers all,

I've had two nasty e-mails from loosing bidders; I report them to eBay for abusive and threatening language.

I am "Holding my fingers in the shape of an L on my forehead", so Mr. Smashmouth has often said. Nothing is illegal about bidding at the last second on Ebay. That is the only way I bid anymore. I have seen cars go up to all that they are worth (by that I mean what the completed auctions were averaged at) in the first day, and then people just keep looking at that sucker for the next 6 or 9 days and more often than not, will bid it up for the sheer fact that they do not want to get outbid, rather than stop bidding at what the normal prices are for these at the time. I take the very most I am willing to spend, and plunk it down in the last 2 seconds of the auction. If I lose, oh well, I will just wait until the next auction comes up. The person obviously did not want it as bad as you did, or else, he would be the one forwarding shipping and payment information. As far as angry emails, I would just respond with one line: "Muhahahahaha, Im the King of the World!"

For what it's worth.......I have recieved a few nasty emails from sniped bidders on my auctions. Go figure! Like I have control? I block those folks from future bidding because one guy/gal was so upset about it, they started bidding on all my auctions. Sniping can happen at a live auction too. If you want it, bid on it. Waiting till the last minute is a rush but too risky if you really want or need the item. Jim

haha, that's a GOOD ONE, Jim!!

Would never have believed it coming from anyone else, except you.

Mind boggles at the mentality of a few in the masses. [xx(]

These are toy cars... not exactly life-or-death items.

Probably a good idea that eBay don't allow "human body parts"... [:(]

Bottom line is if you get any abusive, threatening or just generally unwanted email coming into via ebays system just report them directly to ebay and they will handle it, as it against thier rules - unlike sniping which is perfectly legal.

Don't give the complainers the satisfaction of being drawn into an arguement with them.

I think Sniping is just a generic term for last minute bidding, whether you do it manually or use a bit of software to do it. From a sellers point of view or another bidder there is no way to tell what method was used.

I think ebay would struggle to tell the difference too , but probably could make life more difficult for the software people as most of the bids they generate must arrive at ebay from a small group of IP addresses, so they could block these. That said it is not really that difficult for the software company to 'spoof' different ip addresses.

The other thing they could do is make it so that when entering a bid you have to enter a 'random' code which appears on screen, much like they do when you submit pages to Altavista. This way any automated process will fail as the actually bidding process would be slightly different each time and you would have to physically looking at the screen to make the bid.

(Hope they are not reading this [;)])

I think most people use snipper software because it's easier. Thats why I use it.

If an auction is finishing in the middle of the night then I will use it, if it's finishing during the day I will do it manually. The extra few seconds you can leave it by using software is of little or no consequence I would say.

The only other time you would use it ( maybe it was Chris who mentioned this before ) is if you see something with say 6 days still to go, then you stick it on your snipes so you don't worry about it or have to remember.

I don't bid on anything until the end anyway, ( unless I want to remove a BIN [}:)][:D][}:)] ). If someone can give a valid reason for bidding before the last few seconds then I'd like to hear it. I really can't see why you would bid early.

I personnaly dont use Snipes but have thought about it. I can't see the fuss about snipes. The person who wins the auction is the highest bidder not the last bidder. A manual bid can beat a snipe just by being higher. These people that get annoyed at loosing snipes are just sore loosers. If i loose an auction because someone is willing to pay more than me then fair enough well done to them [:D]

I'm sure its annoying loosing an item you really would like but thats the thrill of the chase thats what an auction is all about [:P]

Bidding early just gives other bidders a marker to beat. I made this mistake and spent way more than i wanted. If you wait till a few hours before then you can see and assess the level of interest and check the price to see if its within your budget.

Erm... first you say:

Haven't you just countered your own arguement? [:P]

But this *IS* sniping... ie bidding at "last minute".

Doesn't matter if its last second or in the closing hours,

its still pretty much the same tactic. [?]

Ok Willy so you made me look stupid [:I]

What i mean is; I dont know why this guy is getting so annoyed at loosing to a snipe. He lost because blazingblazer78 was willing to pay more for the item not because he used auction sniper.

My second point is that bidding on an item early can mean that you are more likely to pay more at the end to win the item. Some people that bid at the last minute can see how much is being bid and prepare a suitable bid to beat it.

Yeah but some people think that using snipper software rather than manualy bidding at the last minute gives you an unfair advantage. I bid in the last hours manually not using a sniper.

Maybe i cant explain my point very well but i know what i mean (i think LOL) [:D] [;)]

all i can say to this is, i snipe pretty much ALL the important auctions that i watch and want to win. for me, its the only way that i win anything!, whenever i bid early, 9/10 times i,ll loose that auction to a fellow sniper, and i think fair play to him!. i dont use "sniper sotware" for this though, as long as the auction finishes before midnight and i,m near my PC, i,ll stay up and wait for those dying moments then put a bid in, other wise sometimes i TXT a bid in.

no-ones ever sent me snotty Emails, but i seriously think those sort of people ought to chill out and learn to bid better.

no one likes a bad looser[:o)]
