I just received my NIB rough rider from AJ Rupp.

He packaged it INCREDIBLY well, but UPS still manage to damage it.

To unpack it, I poured all the flo-pack granules into the company flo-pack hopper, then inspected the damage.

The damage wasn't due to crushing, it looks more like something has pierced the box (straight thru the ups tracking label, so I know it was done after it left AJ)

I phoned ups regarding claiming for the damage, and to claim, I have to send it to them with the ORIGINAL packing.

Here's where the problem is; if they believe or can prove I haven't put all the original packing (now in the company hopper) back in the box, I don't have a claim!

So, if you receive a damaged parcel, keep the packing material seperate!

This is not a pop at AJ, he did everything he could to prevent damage, it's UPS that are the problem!

Thats why we should inspect boxes for external damages/deformations before we sign the acceptance and we see something suspicious, have the delivery guy write it down, helps alot if you discover damages afterwards inside.

In this kind a problems, always polite but hard insisting helps, like all companies that want to survive they try first the best to put you obstacles, good luck!!

Trouble is, I didn't sign for it, one of my colleagues did. I didn't even know it had been delivered for a hour.

UPS say unless I have all the granules (which I know I don't) there is no case for a claim.

The things that really annoy me is that

a)they damaged the box (damage is thru their label)

b)they taped up the hole

c)they never bought it to anyones attention on delivery.

I tried polite hard insisting, but the 'phone droids' have a chain of responses programmed in, and a manager is never around when you need one.

Also, the granules are very different to the ones I have here, or have seen before, so it's not just a case of repacking the box[:(]

Thankfully, the car itself wasn't damaged, so if anyone's got a box going cheap, lemme know!

The title 'This is good!!' seems somewhat out of place here!!! [:(] [V]

Theo, inspecting the box first seems a very good tip, I'll remember that! [:D] But in Twinsets case it's too late for that though... [8)] [:(]

Twinset, would you happen to have some pictures of the damage for illustration? [:0]

First rule of shipping anything rare or really valuable:

NEVER SHIP VIA UPSid="Century Gothic">id="size3">id="green">

Unless you are preppared to pack it safe enough to be airdropped from a 737 cargo plane.

I ship hundreds of items a month and of all the shippers UPS is the worst. Both from an amount of damage to denial of all claims against them.

Twinset, why not go down to a shipping supply store and buy some of the packing foam that AJ used. Then just give that to UPS. They will never know the difference. They just use these types of tactics to discourage you from amking a claim.

UPS should honor the claim either by settling with you, directly, or thru shipper filing claim. They may issue a pick-up request.[V] In the event you return damaged parcel to UPS for insurance claim... they should issue you a check for item's insured value, with proof of price you paid. [:)] There's a "catch" though! They may either keep the item, destroy it, or return it to shipper! In most instances, the damaged box is possible more valuable, to you, than a refund?[?]

I strongly encourage all buyers and sellers, if both are in the continental USA, to use FedEx "ground" service. FedEx "ground" has a FAR better success rate, IMHO. I've had ONE claim in over 10000 items shipped thru them!

UPS confirmed for a total settlement, goods would be retained.

Even then, they 'appraise' the goods, and offer a price, which isn't likely to be what I paid.

The only partial settlement, is a refund of carriage charges to the sender.

Again, there is no problem with the packing, the box looks like it took a fork (from a fork lift) thru the side.

At the end of the day, I got a nice NIB rough rider, with a bent box - better than a nice box with a bent rough rider in it!

The other wonderful fact I learnt, is that the UPS driver told the guy signing for it the box was damaged, but no-one thought to come get me - and I'm only 30 feet from the delivery door

I think this is just one of those times that you say forget it and get on with your life. I know its a pain but if they do anything now they wont later, its not in their interest. Just remember next time to use another company, its their loss.

Hey guys,

I am a contractor/driver for Fed Ex Ground (thanks for the good word Bill) and I cant even begin to tell you the badword that these boxes go through and how they are handled. I personally take good care of him once they are on my truck, but I gurantee, they are literally tossed a few times (sometimes on to the floor, sometimes to another person) by hand before you get it. The only advice I can really give, if you are sending a fragile box, with alot of fragile stuff inside, is simply to double box it. In the Rough Riders case, I would have packed the original Rough Rider box into one box with peanuts, and then packed that box into another. A common practice when I ship anything like that, although if it was indeed impailed by a fork truck, anything short of a steel box probably would not have survived unscathed. Regards.

Oh, I almost forgot, what kind of packing granules are you talking about Twinset? I do not know how UPS would know what was originally in the box as far as packaging goes, but if I have the stuff you need, and you want to pursue it, I can send you the packing for free. I know the main stuff out there being used is the water soluble peanuts, although they look like little white curved tubes, and then the regular wavy styrofoam chunks.

Yep! Was taking some pix of the box to post here, and realised I'm getting steamed about a cardboard box[xx(]

Scott - Apparently, there are some very distinctive packing foam styles around.

At work we use polystyrene (styrofoam??) peanuts, whereas this box had soft 'chewy' foam 8s in it.

After shipping a couple of things before speaking to UPS, I'd sent most of the foam 8s elsewhere.

Anyroad, no longer a problem, although I just showed 'her with the hoover' what I'd said about the cat, and I got some grovelling to do[;)]
