Hi all,

Do you folks notify the seller/buyer first before leaving a negative/neutral feedback? It really annoys me when the other side gives you a neutral/negative without even letting you know until you check your feedback profile. I think we all should notify the other side first when there is problem so we can work things out first before leaving feedback.

Just a few minutes ago I got my first neutral feedback ever. The seller said I overcharged him on shipping, which I admit I did, not intentionally though. I quoted him 5USD for shipping but the actual shipping was only about 1USD since the buyer lives in the same province as I do. I was going to reimburse him the extra shipping anyway just this evening when I got home but he had already left me a neutral. I feel that if I had reimburse the money this afternoon before he left me the feedback, or better yet if he had contacted me when he found out I overcharged him, this whole thing could have been resolved without the neutral feedback.

I am an ebay buyer too and I have got screwed so many times before (I was overcharged on shipping by 20USD+ on a few occasion) so the last thing I want a buyer to think of me as a seller is I am some jerk who likes to rip ppl off by charging high on shipping![:(] I have overcharged ppl on shipping before either by over estimating/inaccurate quote from the posties but in all cases either the buyers would let me know or I would let them know and in all cases I reimburse them the money. In fact, I just reimbursed 2 buyers the extra shipping just last nite!

Maybe I am making it sound like a lot worse then it really is but I don't think I deserve this bad karma.[:(] ....and worst of all my feedback history is no longer perfect with all positives......[:(][:(][:(][:(][:(]

I think that you should have mailed him to say you posted his item and also mentioned that the postage was only $1 and you were going to refund the difference. This would have avoided the neutral but I do agree he should have mailed you first to request a refund.

Hi Darren,

I was contacting him and in fact I was typing an email to him in the evening telling him I was gonna give him back the extra money however I didn't know at that time he had already given me that neutral. I did send him that email eventually telling him he could have contacted me to resolve the problem before leaving feedback. Oh well it's too late to change anything now but I will refund the extra money regardless.

In fact when I was in school this afternoon I was thinking of giving him back the money but I decided to wait til I get home in the evening. I now regret not doing that this afternoon. If I had contacted him a few hrs earlier my feedback would have stayed perfect... sigh. Oh well it's too late now.[V]

Not to worry, 1 negative/neutral out of loads of positive isnt a problem. Just leave a follow up on the feeback explaining it. I got a negative once by accident from a buyer that gave me someone elses feedback. I explained underneath and have sold loads of stuff all with perfect feedback so people arent bothered.

Jason,

Hindsite is always 20/20. I don't think you even needed to notify him, just refund him the money right away before he receives the package and find out about it. Heck, who knows, he may even post a comment for you as the most honest eBayer he's ever dealt with. If you ever chatted with successful eBayers who have hundreds or thousands of feedbacks but no negatives, he or she will tell you under charge on shipping is key to customer happiness even if customer is paying a premium on the merchandise.

Cheers,

James

As much as I am sure you don't really need my personal point of view on this one (even though that is what forums are for), I think that buyers should expect being over charged a bit ....it has happened to me before and I understand that buyers do this for some extra coin to sweeten the deal for them (not saying that your over charge was because of this by any means) still when it happens to me I leave positive feedback because I knew the charges before I got into it. I always ask for an approx shipping charge so I know how much it should come to. I am even more pleased when it is lower. Shipping for me has never been higher than quoted.[:o)]

Sometimes I find it difficult to give exact shipping cost without actually going to the post office in person. I have over/under estimated shipping charges before using the canadapost parcel rate calculator online. I try to go to the post office whenever possible though to give the exact shipping. Another problem is that some buyers just never reply any emails when I ask them to give me their shipping address. Some of their checkout pages don't show their full address and the only way I know where they are is by clicking their feedback link. When this happens it's hard to give them an exact shipping since shipping charges to different states and provinces vary.
