If you got a few minutes, could you give this a look over, and pretend to be a father who knows nothing about RC cars.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...egory=1200&rd=1

The reason I'm asking is I sold it to a guy and wants to return it, and I would like to see if you guys see anything 'hidden' or misleading.

I've already agreed to refund his money, now I know why he bought it, I'm just wondering if anything seems to imply this car would run straight from the box.

Please post it here, I got no problem reading it[:D]

Here's the mail,

quote:
I have received the car this morning and for that I thank you for your fast service..............

But to my displeasure the car is a complete and utter wreck, it has got no remote control with it, and according to the model shop in my area it will cost over £120 to get it up and running.

If this had been in your advert with the said car I would not have pursued my interest any further, I did in fact trust that you were selling a car worth the value that I have paid.

Please Please could you respond to this email as soon as you can as I feel that I was honest enough to send your the money.

Just think how I felt when I saw the car and found out how much it is going to cost to put it right

If your buyer knows nothing about RC cars, he should've asked more question before buying it. I know I would ask a ton of questions on something I know nothing about, especially if the car needs anything else to run out of the shipping box. However, in the future, I'd suggest you put discliamer like since item was not tested, it's sold as is, no guarantee and no returns. Also, tell bidders that they only get what's in the pictures, no more and no less. I guess you failed to mention it does not come with a radio transmistter. [;)]

Btw, you said now you know why he bought it. Can you tell us why?

I guess its hard to say for all us seasoned ebay pros[;)]

I guess if I was being hyper critical and had my pretend newbie head on all I could say is you don't actually say anything is obviously missing or broken. So if I got it and the wheels didn't turn or something was pretty obviously broke I'd be upset.

What was it he complained about?

ok I will give a crack at this.

If I were a father who knows nothing about rc cars I would....

1) Think that AIRTRONICS 27mhz RADIO RECEIVER -must have the transmitter with it. It should also work(Yes I saw the not tested part).

2) IT'S IN GOOD CONDITION, BUT I HAVEN'T HAD THE CHANCE TO TEST IT - tells me that it should run but you haven't gotten around to using it yet.

Ok now back to reality...

1) What exactly did the hobby store say what's wrong with it? Does $120 pounds = a new radio system? or what. He sould be specific.

2) I don't understand how someone can not see the words NOT TESTED.

3) Why is a father who knows nothing about rc buying a vintage nitro car???

I also noticed that this sale was completed outside of ebay. Your reserve was not met! So he's got no real recorse, not even negative feedback. Yeah I can see a couple hidden items <--only if you're the village idiot. You're not an rc-master and like you said HAVEN'T TESTED IT.

If you're really into helping him - then ask for specifics to what is wrong - badword ask for the hobby store number and find out what's wrong.

Hope this helps.

You do say it has a radio receiver. Someone who knows nothing would think this is the complete radio. You do not say anything is missing or broken, even though you can see some damage to the radio box in the pictures.

Snollan- If he knows nothing about them he would not know it is a vintage car, and spares are not readily available.

Assuming there is no parts on the car need replacing I must say £120 is way too much for a basic radio set, a starter and some fuel.

If I knew nothing about RC cars I wouldn't spend £155 on a vintage untested car then complain about it. Your ad looks very fair, although its easy to assume a certain level of knowledge from your bidders.

Car looks great though, dont it![:P]

It doesnt say "ready to run" or "complete" or "tested" in the ad, maybe refund (minus postage) and resell with written for idiots type ad, "This car does not have a transmitter, sold as is" etc.

I have wanted one of those cars for ages, but it will have to wait inline behind the hot-tub pool table etc!

Cheers

I would say that its a fair description, but as netsmith pointed out, we are mostly ebay pro's on here.

The points about 'why buy a vintage car' are all very true.

It may be an idea to specify in future auctions what is not included etc...

I had a woman moan about a phone I sold on ebay about it not having a charger, the listing made no mention of a charger, but she assumed it has one due to the postage costs (Just illustrating the logic of ebayers) (and women - lol - joke)

I'm not sure what I'd do with this one. I would definatley ask him what the shop said it needed. Is it that far off running?? If not I would agree a price and stick a TX with it and get it fired up and test it out.

I also had allot of problems with a nitro car I sold a while back, the guy left positive feedback then filed a NPS (Non performing seller) with ebay as he took it to his LHS and they pulled it apart verbally, even though I had done a nut and bolt rebuild and it was better than new with loads of new parts etc. Basically he thrashed it to death, held it off the floor and opened the throttle up until if snapped the con-rod. Sweet...

Nothing wrong with the description.

It sounds like he is a bit of a newbie, liked the look of the car, didn't realise the ins and outs of vintage cars, has changed his mind and wants to get his money back.

Ebay isn't your local model shop, you can't get all touchy feely with stuff b4 you buy, thats why stuff costs less and there is a wider choice available.

Seems to me he got what was advertised and now has changed his mind.

You need to find a polite way to say tough luck.[?]

Just my opinion.

Yeah Terry,

I just figure if you don't know what your doing, then go to the hobby store and buy a new one. That way you can return it - that's all.

Plus if you look at his feedback, he's buy's a lot of technical items, he should have an idea about ebay by now.

hey andy, if the buyer does send the car back, and you give him a re-fund, i would still be interested in buying it - for a reasonable price [;)].

drop me a line mate.

cheers,

james.

Hi guys

He bought it for his 8 year old son!

I have no problem refunding his money, all along he said his son was into RC, I just didn't realise he meant bit char-g's[;)]

I don't know what the £120 is for yet, it needs a starter box and transmitter, but I don't know what else.

Reading what's been said, it does seem to be written with a bias towards 'those in the know', but thats who wrote it too [;)]

Trouble with writing negative ads is knowing when to stop, so I tried to be informative, with pictures.

I got a couuple of mails regarding the damned Blazer body, asking whats missing, and the list is fairly bad to read, it's very small stuff, but still missing.

Just one of those things. He's agreed to send it back, before I send his money, so I'm only out £7 for postage, at least I didn't pay final value fees.

I only wanted to say that this sort of thing happens more and more to me on E-Bay now...

I mostly only sell through the club and word of mouth now.

Posted

This is only my second time, and the first I've given any money back.

Strangely enough, the last time was with a Landjump!

Chap declined further pictures, other than the four in my showroom, then demanded I refund him half his payout.

He was politley declined.

This one (SilverFox) was no grief, the guy just didn't know what he was buying, and 5kg of nitro powered ankle breaker isn't the thing for an 8 year old - specially as it's not fitted with a brake (It's not missing, they weren't fitted to them!)

Posted

As well as refunding his money I would also point him in the direction of his LHS. If his son is moving up from a Char-G and he is prepared to spend £155, then he would be better of with a TL-01 package.

I've been selling stuff on the 'Bay for years and sadly you *must* point certain things out. For example. You really need to make things like 'transmitter not included' crystal clear. I also see what seems to be a newbie buyer (ok at least RC newbie) having made a mistake. SO I would say this episode is partly to blame on you both.

Posted

There has to be a lign though , you can not point every thing out or you will run it down so bad you will never sell it .

Its easy for us to say dont give him his money back and stuff him etc , but y should you lose out on the deal at least charge him postage and a little for the hassle.

The add was just fine, was there a transmitter in the picture, not really why does he think there is one then, The whole of the Ebay community splits up into certain fractins, there are the bidders who

only look at the pictures and don't read the description (40%), then there are the ones who only read the description and don't look at the pictures(40 %), then there are actually some who don't bother either reading the description or look at the pictures, themn there 15% that actually rerad and look. I have had to handle this thing before. A guy won a madcap buggy of mine. It said in the description

that there was no radio gear included, and that the car was used, however once he received it, he emailed me in a very unfriendly fashion, that when received the car it wouldn't drive (no radio gear)

and also that there were scratches on the underside, and the front wheels had wre loose( due to the plastic bushings). I took it back ,

but what else can I say. I also have this new thing about 0 feedback bidders. They need to contact me before placing a bid or their bids will be cancelled and I put them on my blocked bidder list. I sold a Turbo urns on Ebay recently , I had to remove 6 of them (item no 3557489652 if you want to have a look), I mean it's unbelivable they just don't read the description. I think you just got another one of those dads who realised that buy a new radio control car in a hobby shop is expensive, and then tought he'd try Ebay for something cheap

and had got a clue about thatz whole hobby. Very nice of you to refund his money as might well have his wife breathing down his neck,

and boy screaming his head off that he still hasn't got a radio controlled car. So once he's got the money back he'll go to a hobby shop and buy his son a nice Fighter Buggy. I mean what was the guy on buying a 1/8 scale 3.5ccm gas car for a boy with 8 years of age ??.

Perhaps he misguessed the scale, and tought it was a nice bit Char G frame buggy...........lol

See there is the real problem. In order to protect yourself from the few morons and completely clueless newbs you have to cover yourself with tons of details. And besides, I would prefer to hear all about the details. That way there is *no* chance of misunderstanding. To do anything less is omissive IMHO.

If you write your ads fishing for impulse buyers and clueless buyers you are just fishing for problems.

Hi Twinset,

I think that you could perhaps have made it clearer that it might be a non-runner (just saying it's not tested doesn't mean it might not work to a lot of people).

Apart from that though, I'm amazed that someone would bid on the item as shown for an 8 year old, whether or not he knows anything about R/C cars. The photos clearly show it's not RTR, and buying a Nitro for a kid's first car is just mad. Buying at auction (online or real life) is not for people who aren't experienced in the goods they are bidding on.

I think that your offer to refund is most generous, and I don't see why you have to stand the postage, I would personally have got the guy to return the goods, for a refund minus the original postage cost.

The guy should be more responsible and not buy a Nitro buggy for his 8 year old. These cars will rip your fingers off if you are careless. They are not toys.
