Can anyone reccomend a paint available in the UK that is a match, or very good match for the gold plating you get on a lot of Tamiya wheels? Most paints dont have that brilliant gold shine like the real thing!

I bought some Tamiya clear yellow X24 paint. I have been wanting to try spraying some over Alclad chrome. I don't know how the results will turn out though. Really you wouldn't be happy with anything less than a set of new wheels. You can pick them up on ebay for about $30-$50.

I've been hearing about Alclad chrome paint from a few places. Is this stuff as good as they claim on the web site? Does anybody know where to get it in Europe? Also is it expensive?

There is a company here in the UK called Plastikote who make general purpous spray enamels. I used their chrome paint and was very pleased, its not perfect, not quite that brilliant gleaming shine but very good. I then got a can of their gold, as the lid is exactly the finish i want and yep...you guessed it....its a load of ****! Its that kind of brassy metalic look....not at all the gleaming crystal bright finish the cap suggests! It does say on the can that the cap is approximately the colour of the contents...this was clearly a VERY approximate guide! I wouldnt recomend this. A shame, as the chrome is a realy nice paint. Maybe I'll make do and keep the wheels i have now. $30-$40 is a lot for a set of wheels, considering the whole car cost only a bit more than that! I'll keep on the lookout for some more paint!

I bought some "MOTYP" ( or whatever the company is called ) chrome paint. It said on that tin that it was only a rough guid to the finish. It was **** too, just like normal silver paint, not chrome at all. And it was expensive.

The alclad chorme paint looks sweet. You have to air brush it on though. Durability is an issue though. On my Avante it has stayed put. On my Mountaineer radio box it kep rubbing off. I think it is all in the technic of the application.

I see on the website that you have to put gloss black as an undercoat. maybe if that does'nt stick to the surface then it would cause a problem. Anyway, is it expensive?

Maybe undercoating the chrome or gold colours might help....I know white, yellow and red are supposed to be good for gold. I am a decorator by trade so perhaps i'll go to my paint suppliers and see if they know of anything a bit more convincing than the stuff I have already tried!

Gloss Black is the best undercoat as it traps all of the light. In my case the gloss black paint was sticking fine. It was the alclad paint which would rubb off. I think I need to get the airbrsh down closer to the part I am spraying and use even less air pressure. I think that the chrome paint was partly drying in the air between the airbrush nozzle and the part.

I think Alclad was originally formulated for Hard plastic models. It just so happens that it works on lexan also. In the FAQ they recomend against using any overcoats with the chrome finish

Hi fallguy, is that the people who make all the little lead figures? Do you know exactly what the product was called? Spray or brush application? In gold?...chrome? What primer did you use?
