I just bought a Focus WRC 02 TL-01,

I was a bit dissapointed with the cars performance. Is there any way to get more speed out of the car?

I would like to know how much more performance would be gained by adding a speed tuned gear set and ball race set?

Are these the first mods I should do to the car.

Bearings are a must,less friction=longer run times!!

i race a TL-01 at my local club and basically I've put every available hop-up on it,tie-rods,speed tuned gears, stainless suspension shafts, carbon fibre gear shafts/prop shafts, oil filled shocks the list goes on!!

i run it with a 13x2 motor and 3000 ni-mh's and it can hold it's own against most other cars that are run!!

Going to put my neck on the line here but what the heck, lol! A TLO1 was probably never desgined to go fast.... Well not without shed loads of money and time anyway. Not slating the car, i own a TL01B baja champ and its a great car for bashing around but just cant help feeling thats what it does best. Anyway getting back on topic....

Ball bearings are a must before even thinking about faster motors so def do these first.

An ESC is also a must for stock or mod, which one largely depends on budget - speed costs money, lol! You can get something pretty decent that will handle 17T for around £35 - £40

Motor is something that again depends on budget and choice of ESC. Something around the 19T is a good compromise between cost, speed and run time. Peak and team orion do a range of mod motors for about £12. Their non-rebuildable so when the coms wreaked its time to buy another motor but for the money not bad.

Of course it all depends on whether you want to race or bash but thats probably opening a whole new can of worms...... Fatboyslim, bet that TL01 fully hopped up upsets a lot of people, nothing like seeing the underdog come up with the goods [:D] Anyway hope some of the above helps?

Edit to correct some really bad spelling [:I]

Putting money into serious hop ups for the TL-01 that are not useable on other cars are not worth it in my opinion. Ball bearings are the only thing worthwile.

Of course "hop ups" like an ESC, better motor and oil shocks are cool since they can be used on other cars.

I would go for:-

Ball bearings.

ESC + a better motor (19 or 27T rebuildable stock).

Those alone will make quite a significant speed difference. Add the oil shocks and you will get the handling to go with it too.

The TL-01 is a good, but slightly long in the tooth chassis now. Having said that, I've seen good TL-01 drivers who can beat the lower TC3 drivers at club level, so it's still a viable racer. But if you aren't racing, then the car with the above hopups should be more than quick enough to keep you happy for a long time.

SpeedTuned Gear set ups your gearing by about 30%, I think.

That means your Top Speed will be about 30% more.

But your Acceleration will be less, as your motor is made to work harder.

Luckily this option is not very expensive, so why not?

If you haven't done anything to the car, you may also want to

consider getting a bigger motor pinion gear. Kit comes with a

19T I think... you can use a 21 or 23t.

Or get a more powerful motor - don't go overboard though.

Definitely don't do anything of this before you get FULL BEARINGS!

Yes the TL-01 comes with the 19 tooth pinion. It might be a hair less money to try the 21 or 23 tooth pinions (the TL-01 can *only* use 19, 21 and 23).

hey i got the same car

its painted all silver[8D]

yeah the stock speed was too slow...but torque was nice...i did donuts all day long[:P]

i've got an ESC 13T limit...venom fireball modifed 15T motor...speed tuned gears...23T pinion...and chassis lowered to 6mm...2400mah battery...car runs for like 15-20 mins

haven't been through a radar before but i'm guessing top speed is around low 50-55kph (30-34 mph)

still need grippier tyres...stock tyres all worm out and torn..**** it slides around like its driving on ice while turning...lol...but using them for drifting with pvc tube...

[:)]

oh another question...when i replaced the plastic bearings i just put the bb's in without wiping off any grease...is it fine to have grease with bb's or should i wipe the grease off?

I got my Tl01 3 years ago when a local hobbie store closed down and the were selling the kits really cheap. stock its slow but now ive moddified it with

ball race bearings(great first mod)

speed tuned gear set

adjustable tie rods and turnbuckle

blue alluminium suspension arms(look great from GPM)

first modded motor was a 540 rs sport tuned which was quite fast.

then I got a LRP GT2 Turbo 11 turn which was fast but not a lot of torque. After running the GT2 for a while on the basic mechanical speed controler It caught fire!!! The car went out of control , hit a lampost and burst into flames!!!!

After replacing the electrics with a Silverstar Ultra ESC and a Tamiya super modified 11 turn the car was running at 40mph with 3000mhw battery packs. good fun chasing the full scale cars up my road

I agree with Terminal_Junkie - as a Baja Champ owner, I love it, but as a race/road car, dont think the TL01 will ever really get "up there", although it can get close.

In addition to all the advice below, lowering weight will help - lightweight chassis is an option (though I have heard, not as strong), as are carbon gear shafts and carbon prop shaft.

Also, I find the TL01 chassis steering and suspension to be a little sloppy, and therefore flat out in a straight line, i wonder if this will affect speed (as the car can hop about a bit). Think about adjustable steering linkage, aluminium front and rear uprights? (although this is adding back more weight)

Ball racing is essential, as is a lower turn motor and ESC
