I recently ordered a Protech Maga Peak 3000 and a twin pack of 2100mha batteries.

On receipt of the batteries I charged them on trickle charge for the first 2 cycles (allowing the charger and battery to cool between each charge).

During the week I cycled the battery packs on fast charge a couple of times without a problem (however, the running times were not much longer than my 14000mha pack).

When I came to charge the battery packs this afternoon I plugged in as per the manual and left the battery fast charging. After the pack had been on for approx 15mins the charger began beeping as if the pack had peaked. On checking the battery it was still cold (not the normal small heat build up u get at the end of a charge). Being unsure on the status of the battery I allowed the charger to cool down before attempting to charge my second battery. After connecting the battery pack I began fast charging this time keeping an eye on the time and checking the temperature of the battery pack every few mins (to ensure the battery was not over charging). After approximately an hour and a half the battery pack had not peaked. At this point I became concerned and disconnected the charger.

I ran my car with the two battery packs to try and ascertain their state. I found both to have very little charge in them.

I can only assume my charger has developed a fault :(

am i right...

It's possible you have a charger problem. Also, check to be sure that your charger can handle Nickle Metal cells as I gaurantee that those 3000's are NiMH. Most older Nicad chargers cannot correctly charge NiMH.

Funny, I have *never* seen a 3000 Nicad pack. Every one I ever saw was NiMH.

Does it still charge the 1400's correctly? I have also seen some older chargers that did not like large capacity packs.

Hey TW I think you might have misread his post:

The mega peak 3000 is a charger and the 2100mha (mah typo) are the packs....

HOLD YOUR HORSES MATE! Check the 7,5A fuse on the front. I bet its broken. I have the exact same charger and had the exact same problem. My problem was solved by changing the fuse.

If not,send it back[:I]

Ive just tested it with the air bag fuse out me car (luckily 7.5amp too).

Still no joy.

Ill send it back tomorrow

Thanks anyway!

I have the same charger and never had problems with it, other than blowing a fuse several times. [:I] They are compatible with NiMH packs BTW. [8D]

I don't believe 3000 Nicads are availble for RC but Mr_psy has stated that they are NiCads and Not NIMH. Anyway, from my experience the higest capacity Nicads are the 2400.

My charger also goes really hot and smelly during charging. Have had no problems with it sinse i changed the fuse. I guess its the transformator in it that gets so hot as its far cooler when using the 12V intake.

While im waiting for my charger to be returned...

can I charge my 2100mha or 2400 mha packs on my old charger. Its rated to charge 1400mha packs.

Its got a 30mins timer, so ill have to monitor the temp as they charge so i can tell when the battery is full...

but will it work?

either on trickle or fast charge.

Thanks

Yes, just multiply the nomimal charging time with how many times the capacity is bigger and the check the temperature with your hand for the last 20% of charge.

Get some spare fuses while your at it, too. You are goign to need them, at least I did in the beginning. [:I]

To take away all confusion, there is no such thing (yet?) as a 3000 NiCd battery. He ment the 'Protech Mega Peak 3000', which is actually the name of the charger - the '3000' has nothing to do with the battery pack in this case. Besides, as spice pointed out, 2400 is the highest mAh rating I have ever seen on a NiCd battery. [:D]
