OK Guys and Gals,

After wrecking 5 ESC's in one week, including a Novak super rooster I need help. I must point out that there was nothing wrong with the ESC's and I love Novak stuff but sadly I live in the UK and it rains (alot) and I like to drive my cars so they got wet...in fact VERY wet...despite splashproof covers, condoms etc...Is there any ESC out there that will survive being drowned, covered in mud, run 8.4v, no motor limit and be generally abused or do I simply revert back to MSC????? I do love the ESC's but they are simply not rugged enough or designed for our lovely british climate!! Cheers, Ian.

You can run Mtronics ones under water, as they are completely resin sealed. They seem to have a reputation for blowing up, but I think this is unfounded, and often seems to be touted by people who have put a rebuildable stock motor on the ECO27 or ECO20, which are real low-range models and not designed for that sort of usage. The higher up Mtronics will cope with no-limit to turns, and more powerful battery/motor combinations.

Ok the old eco27 was limited to a silver can motor (i didnt know this till i blew one up) but mtroniks have just brought out a new eco27 that will take a rebuildable stock a great buy at £20. And an eco 20 will and always has been able to cope with a rebuildable stock there seems to be some misconception by some people that the eco27 and the eco20 are the same esc which is untrue.

I've got a 11 turn MTronix one and it has reverse, I didn't realise this and nearly swapped it at one point but at the last minute I connected it up and found out it was forward and reverse!

Can't remember which it is though - will look later

Cheers guys!! I'll give an Mtronics a try.

I take it I'm not the only one who runs buggies thru mud and water then????? If I had to wait for a dry day oop here in the North I'd be waiting a long time........[:(][:(]

If you have a look through the some of the 'event/action' pictures in the showrooms, you'll see that you're not alone. The 'Yorkshire contingent' seem particularly partial to water, mud and sand [xx(] and of course there are W&G's seminal 'submarine Pajero' pics and movies [8D]

On my monster scorcher I fitted the receiver and ESC into their own little box with a cooling fan and this works really well and it has survived being driven thru waves at the beach. However, I haven't got that much room in a thundershot chassis. The receivers seems OK, I just dried them in the oven but the ESC's are more delicate. They were pretty well protected or so I thought and I didn't know they had got wet until they burnt out......I'm up in North Lincs which is next to Yorkshire. Guess the weather up here more or less forces running in the wet either that or I'm just addicted to driving in mud......[8D]

M4F, you'll have to come to one our get togethers at Clumber Park, you don't usually get much wetter running than the 4-5 inch deep muddy puddles that we run all our cars through!!!

Its probably only about 45 mins drive from where you are. I live in Doncaster which is in spitting distance of N. Lincs.

Hey there.

I have an relatively new 11 turn Mtronics, which is one of the fully sealed ones... however!

I ran my king blackfoot the other day on some damp grass, and splashed through a couple of small puddles...and it jammed on full throttle twice!!

Quite spectacular to see it leaping across the BMX track flat out with a stock motor, but it got rather scuffed when it slammed into a thick bush at the other side.. I couldn't run fast enough to intercept it in time! [:(]

So mabye the Mtronics isn't 100% waterproof? It was only a bit splashed, but I can't think of another reason for it to get stuck..?

Maybe the receiver got splashed and malfunctioned in some way?

Ahh, yes, that could have been why it ran out of control... haven't run it since, but it should have dried out OK by now!

I'll have to think of some way to splash-proof the receiver with a balloon or something! [:I]

I'm pretty sure the ESC is supposed to be totally waterproof.

Cheers!

A balloon would be good I guess (rx doesn't generate any heat) or a condom [:I]. Otherwise Maplin do some little 'project' boxes with screw-on lids that look quite cool.

ha ha! Yes, I was thinking that a condom might be quite suitable... although how would I explain the empty packets to the girlfriend! [:I]

Although I like your thinking with the project box.. my Mtronics ESC doesn't give off much heat either really, it's got quite an efficient heat sink on the bottom.. mabye I can fabricate a waterproof radio box...

Although to be honest I'm thinking of selling the KBF and staying in the dry anyway, it's off-road wet mud performance isn't exactly thrilling! [8)]

I don't have any problems keeping the receiver dry because as you guys say, this doesn't generate heat so can be sealed up tight and yes, I use condoms for this. The ESC do generally require air flow over their heatsinks to keep 'em cool.

AS you are quite demanding in your equipment, Ian... [;)] You know, 8.4V, hot motors, dual motors etc. I say you could give the Carson Super Truck ESC a try. They look like they are the size of a brick, 2 Eco's glued together. [:P] But they are similar to a Novak Super Rooster in limits (AFAIK) and waterproof! Thought to have seen them for €120, twice the cost of a Truck that I have seen for €60... [:)]
