Primers and preshading

Now that I'm using primer on all my car bodies, I noticed that some do a way better job than others.

I picked up a can of Dupli-color Sandable Primer. The stuff can be found at an auto-parts store. It comes with a really nice "EZ touch" nozzle on it. Much much nicer than the "Plasti-coat" stuff.

The big advantage is the color --dark gray. Infact the color is called Gray Hot Rod Primer DAP1692. It acts as a pre-shade color under the color that I'm going to paint the car. For example on my 312t3 that I'm working on, it gives the Red that I used a very dark body to it. It also brought out depth in the low areas, like body panel lines etc etc. I'll post pics soon. The final ++ is that it can fill minor pits yet comes out very thin from the can.

The preshading is a super technique. I started experimenting a bit in 1/48 scale aircraft. I usually use Model Master Flat Black on the panel lines then go back with the airframe color. I know that this not an aircraft forum, but the preshading does give the illusion of deptness(sp).

Yeah the lines on the body turned out fantastic. I also like how your aircraft isn't overdone. So many people try over detail and paint their models. Your's turned out just right--good job.

Do you mean by 'pre shading' putting either a lighter or darker color under the paint to give it a different tone?
