I was wondering how rare the first RC10's are these days to own?I saw a nib at Daryn's retro site but it was not the first model produced!I think these cars are really cool when it comes to looks as well as a perfect addition to a vintage collection! Are they still out there?Do any of you own the earliest model or come close? Are they available on ebay from time to time?Do they have a kit number?

I've just started to notice these. I have never heard of them before now because I was'nt ever really into RC cars before. I only ever wanted some Tamiya car when I was a kid.

The RC10's look really nice. I have seen some on e-bay.com for sale. Even some NIB kits, and they don't seem to fetch much money compared to Tamiya cars of the same era.

When did they first come out?

Here's a new one. It's US buyers ony though.

There are tons of them on ebay. Most used, but the occasional new built, or restored model pops up. Not too costly, but prices are going up! Im currently searching for the perfect model to base my mip 4wd conversion on. Search rc10, rc-10, team associated.

Aren't the gold chassis + white plastics ones the first?

Sorry, we haven't gone near any AE since the RC300 and RC12e. (serious!) Suspect we've missed out a bit.

The original RC-10 had a gold aluminum chassis. It came with a finicky six gear tranny and narrow front suspension arms. The one I have now is an RC-10 CE (championship edition). It has the same Gold aluminum chassis but it has a stealth tranny, wider front arms, and black plastic damper caps instead of gold aluminum.

RC-10's don't command that much of a price. To find a new ones is rare because most were built and abused. When you restoring one, only new parts will do as the nylon seems to discolor from greases and oils. New parts are fairly easy to find but a new chassis is rare. You could pick up a nice runner for about $70-$120.

Eeeh? i have seen darryns and afaik it is indeed the original.. what makes you think it is not??

i have one original and one of the second championship edition rc10's... new built

the champ edition just had different body, wheels, front arms... the second champ had stealth tranny etc...

there was a buy on ebay not long ago who had a bunch of nib rc10s, same chap who is now selling cheap hitec buggys etc.. dont think he has any left tho..

I checked with 1cyl, and the old nib rc10 cars are all gone. Oh well, there are still plenty of nice ones on ebay. Another rout is to buy a new dual sport, and convert it back to buggy using new old parts. I think thats what I will do. Dual sport is discontinued, but still available as old stock from mail order places. They contain stealth tranny, and black aluminum tub, plus of course, road type running gear. Just find some old suspention kits, shock towers, drive axles, wheels, and possibly other specific pieces to make the conversion.

Just spent all afternoon getting mine up and running, will be running it at the Spring Meeting at Snetterton. Anyone had problems with the wiper arm falling off the end of the variable resistor on full brake?

By the way Jimmy, I really like the way you painted your vintage RC-10 body up. I have one of the old round back bodies that I inted to do up for my RC-10. For anyone interested, I came across some vintage RC-10 aluminum wheel covers made by team losi. Even though I don't have the original 3 bolt wheels, they were just to cool to pass up.

Just picked up a second gen rc10. Paid too much, but its mint. Yikes! I thought I would never ever get into these USA built things. I have owned a losi xx4, and found it very boring it was such a perfect competition machine. These old rc10 seem a bit more querky. Im guessing in the far off future, they will very highly sought after.

Associated was toying with the idea of a Collectible re-release of the original rc-10 with short A-arms 6 gear tranny with external diff, chrome knockoffs and the original body style as immortized in the Dirt buggy jammin Jay picture of years ago.

it never came to be....

I own my original 1984 Rc-10 which has been HEAVILY modified over the years, and years of racing, and it still competes with B3s today, the original is superior to the B2 and B3 in every way.

the car has been through several major upgrades.

from original suspension and 6 gear tranny.

To second generation front long A-arms and Jammin Jay ext diff upgrade with slipper and thorp 48pitch internal gears, jammin Air body.

To a major overhaul in 1992 to Andy's worlds front and rear end maxing out at just under 13" wide the legal roar width at that time, and the first generation sealth 2.25 tranny, and teflon 1.56" shocks front and rear. Hyper Razer factory body. The car has run in 5 nationals in Arizona and California , though i never did win and has been to several states in the USA and followed me through my College career. In 1997 it underwent another update to a newer sealth tranny with 2.5 ratio and modified front and rear axle carriers with MIP CVD universals, to run with the next generation B2s. by 1999 i broke down and bought a B3 buggy, i quicky learned it was a piece of junk and used the B3 rear axle CVD universals to switch out my old rc-10 ones. because, Associated stopped making the original rims to fit the rear old style 5/8" axles. the rear hub carriers with 3 degrees of toe-in were also used to make the car more stable in the straights, these also allowed me to adjust the wheelbase of the car for more tuning.

I've NEVER broken one piece on the car. the chassis is still straight and true after nearly 19 years of use. i get major compliments on it at the track and have been offered over 1000$ dollars to sell it.

the chassis gold coating long ago wore off the pan and the custom lowered sides and cut front skid plate add character and the original white plastic Steering servo saver with 2 original tie wrappers still works Flawlessly. turned by my good old FET boosted KO speed servo, connected to my NOVAK T-1 ESC with RED wire ext boost power hookup

:)

The original rc-10 buggy is the best buggy every made hands down and I hope associated will re-release this buggy to the new generation.

I will NEVER sell mine, my grandchildren will adore it :).

This will be the only websight with a pair of mip 4wd rc10 models on display! Seriously, I have scoured the web, and can not find any pics, forums, or threads on the mip 4wd rc10 conversions. I found one mention on rczone, and thats it. Shodog will have an old school conversion, and I will soon have my legend conversion.

thats cause the MIP 4x4 conversion for the rc-10 is junk!

The front spindles and front gear box always broke. It made battery placement badword, and left zero room to mount the steering system.

most people tried to use the Rc-10 Graphite OVAL chassis to give enough room to mount everything and adjust for weight on the chassie

Except the extra wide and long chassie would flex because their was no provision for a upper radio plate, as the original chassis counted on the side support. the first version used a chain drive and front gear ratio for the 6 gear tranny. the last version used a belt and required major cutting of the stealth tranny and rear shock tower.

the belt used to fall off all the time from chassie flex off a jump

Assuming you didn't see one or both of your front tires going off into the sunset cause the hub or spindle snapped off. it didn't last long for a reason.

Another horrible idea was the Fusion Carbon Graphite chassis with the "unbreakable" garentee. i think they went out of biz just replacing the 100's of returned broken chassis. the chassis was an exact duplicate of the alum T-6 chassis but since it was carbon it weighed nothing and was very stiff. the problem was that the chassis didn't have enough countered layers because it was .60 thick and it would split in halve on the fiber direction during a race. also

it weighted too little believe it or not and raised the CG of the rc-10 causeing the buggy to flip over VERY easy. Finally half of them came Tweaked from the mold and needed to be returned. Everyone stopped buying it and just cut down there original chassis even the factory guys learned to stay away from it.

The A&L Mid-tranny conversion was much better. balanced the chassie more. but was still not a good solution since the chassis needed the trailing arm conversion to get the proper fit between the reversed tranny. most people just homemade a Mid-tranny converison RCCA even wrote a 3 issue artical on how to make your rc-10 a rc-10 mid.

the whole mid mounted tranny idea never proved to be any better and hacking up your rc-10 as an expiriment didn't hold peoples attention for too long. also since the shocks were now Behind the rear tires instead of infront caused the suspension to bounce hard on even the smallest bumps.

the most interesting rc-10 conversion was the Active bi-wing setup.

using a bellcrank hooked to the rear swaybar mounts in the rear A-Arms you could adjust a wing to swing into different Aerodynamix modes. when the suspension was completely depressed the wing would be level or negative to try and help the car rebound. when the suspension was decompressed like when a car is in the air the wing would go into full rear down force to keep the cars nose up.

We used to employ this system for Dirl Ovals and it would add seconds to the lap times, helping the car maintain traction.

Also Paragon Jet jets were an interesting product that would vary the valve size of the shock pistions depending of compression.

between the active wing and active suspension you had a pretty advanced system for 1987.

Plus there was no racing class for a 2wd converted to 4wd back in the

day. nobody ran 4wd in the states back then, even the yoko C4 was Primative.

i would stay away from the MIP 4x4 conversion except if you can get a NIB one for collectablity. they go for about 150$ on ebay. and i've seen 5 come up in the last 2 years. most people bought a few 4x4 kits because MIP never sold the front hubs, gear box and spindles seperatly, and you had to purchase a whole kit to keep your car running with 4wd. i garentee of the NIB ones on ebay they will be missing front end parts, because at some point the owner raided the kit for parts.

I dont think anybody cares how the 4wd rc10 performed back in the day. Does anybody care how bad avante really was? No. They are just cool, exotic, hard to find, and deserve some webspace.

Ouch! Furball your hurting my feelings. The MIP 4wd kit I have must be even older than the one your describing as it uses a speedometer cable to drive the front gear box.

http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.asp?cid=5696&id=34

It is virtually the same kit I used on my Scratch built Buggy

http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.asp?cid=6169&id=34

Honestly I don't think it would even keep up with my boomerang. I collect the 4wd kits for Their rarity and coolness factor. This is really a piece of early R/C ingenuity. Shortly after this kit was released there was the yokomo dog fighter and hot shot came about. There weren't any classes for these cars as there weren't any 4wd cars to race.

I was only aware of the belt and chain conversions for rc10. This flex shaft design could be the rarest of them all! Please be sure to post detailed pics when the project is complete. I am really interested in seeing how that set up looks and works.

Any thoughts on the Kinwald Worlds car?!I think this was the last "real" rc10!Then Losi came along and made things difficult when it came to design as well as status! The rc10 use to be the worlds best when a question like "Whats the best car in the world?" use to come up.Now days it's answered like....Losi...Rc10...losi...rc10..umm,I think it's Losi!!

Posted

Well - gil Losi basically designed the original RC-10 !!

In racing nowdays nowdays, the car has less to do with it - as they are pretty much all the same - and EXCELLENT.

It is the batteries/motors that win races now. Of course the driver still has something to do with it ! [;)]

P.S - You are wrong supershot - my model is indeed the first model series produced - it is the "full house" spec - with battery and charge leads etc etc [:D]..............it is also the original gold shock version - and also has the body with spot lights etc etc etc - sorry to dissapoint you!! [:P]

(also have built 80% of the next model - the "CE" - or championship edition from a 3/4 nib kit and some parts).

Cheers

I use to have two CE edition Rc10's.A graphite car as well as a team car with a grahite chassis!I must say that out of all the cars that I have owned nothing competes with the memory of all the fun I had with the first grahite car, just an outstanding car-simple in design, reliable, outstanding performance ect!I remember putting the CE edition beside my Tamiya Boomerang and thinking,"The Boomerang's just a big heap of plastic"!

Ebay Australia recently sold one for under $100!

Finally got my 4-10 legend kit in the mail. I should have the car completed in a couple weeks. This will be the pride of my collection, till I find something even more rare, cool, exotic.

Do you have any pics of your kit? I would be interested to see the similarities and ifferences between mine

Thanks

Sorry, no pics of the 4-10 in kit form. I have just finished installing it on my CE rc10, and will get pics of the complete car soon. I will say that it was fairly complicated to install. The front cvds are a bit notchy, and the belt rubs in a couple places, but overall, it looks like it would kick some serious butt on track. Pics ASAP.
