I was able to pick up a hydra drive kit for the RC-10. It is basically replaces the gear spur and pinion with a belt drive. The kit consists of three belts, three spurs and about 5 or 6 pinion gears. I know these were somewhat popular back in the day but were they any good.

Personally I love belt drive and it should be more efficient than gears, however with fine pitch spur gears the difference is small if any, I saw a few of these used in racing, the car sure sounded much smoother than normal.. wisper quiet.. but changing ratios was more of a hassle for obvious reasons, so this allied to cost restricted the popularity of this idea..

Quincey, your right it is called a Hyper Drive. Here are some pics of the kit.

I have already installed a spur belt and pinion on my Graphite RC-10. I will try to take some pics of it installed. since it comes with three spurs I am probably going to put a set on my RC-10 CE also.

I can't believe anyone would pay $89.95 for this kit. That's probably the reason there were not very popular.

It was expensive, however you get all the ratios you could need at the time so if you take out the cost of having to buy at leat 3 spur gears and 6 pinions for normal racing (say 50 dollars?) it does not seem quite as bad..

HOwever Old gearbox which these seem to be for has the defect of wobbly uncentered spur gears because the diff is housed in it, so I`m not sure how this set up could be adjusted to work properly considering it would be almosty impossible to get consiostent belt tension..

I love the idea though..

I think it was used way before that, quincey, probably around the Jrx-Pro (1992?).
