Hello, everyone:

One of the greatest things you can experience is finding a new hobby shop in the place and moment you least expect it.

Well, turns out I picked up my girlfriend in this innercity mall that I had been only once in the past and just as I turned left in the entrace I see this huge RC shop.

The guy in there is old RC vet straight out from the 80. He even has mullet! Maxximun FFs, old Losis, Tamiyas, RC10, he´s got just about every brand you can think of.

One particular model caught my eye: a banged up Schumi Bosscast hanging (yes hanging!) from the roof. After closer inspection I noticed that the front-end "breaks away"(?) and the shop owner uses a rubber band to hold it together (?). Is this right?

Also, from the other Bosscats here in the TC I can see that some are graphite and some are fiberglass versions, I think. The one I saw had a graphite chassis, but, curiosly enough, no metal shocks (like most of the ones displayed in the galleries of the TC).

If I buy this thing what should I be careful to inspect? How do I know its a Bosscat and not a Procat or a similar 4wd Schumi? Are they good cars?

Matey,

They are very good cars, very nice to look at certainly, and supposedly very good to drive too. I just recently read a review in an old (mid-90s) RC car mag that showed the Bosscat as a graphite chassis. As for the shocks, they may be the later Schumacher plastic bodied jobs, they were being phased in at about the same time - I have them on my Club10 in my showroom. The crashback front end was standard for the Bosscat, the rubber bands are still available, so no worries there.

BossCat was the last of the Cat series before they went to the almost all new Cat 2000, so they're a well-developed buggy. They changed the hubs and arms front and rear to match the rest of the Schumacher range, eg. rear hubs are same as the 2wd trucks and buggies (Cougar2, Shotgun).

Get it and run it, and have some fun..... you'll always be able to find parts here on TC ;-)

The Bosscat was the last Schumacher buggy with the characteristic crashback front end, the idea being that if you hit anything the front end folds up instead of breaking. Schumacher still sell large O rings to keep it together, but a rubber band does the job just as well.

The original Bosscat had a graphite chassis and alloy shocks. Later they produced a Bosscat Sport with glassfibre chassis and the plastic Club 10 shocks.

The Bosscat is quite a different car to Schumachers previous 4wds, there are more parts in common with their 2wd range. The easiest way to tell what the car is is to look underneath. If the front belt runs under the chassis it will be a Procat, if the belt runs above the chassis it is a Bosscat.

Nope, the Lazer came out late 1990, I bought mine November 1990 and it was the first in my area. Sorry to disappoint you. If its a Schumacher it needs to be Procat, XLS or Cougar 1 or 2. Kyosho 4wds have to be an Optima of some sort (unless you really want to risk a Progress) or a Scorpion or Ultima. Gold tub Associated RC10s would do, but I'm not sure if that includes the stealth tranny though.
