Hopefully so will I[:D], but no Ambrose by then

I wanted to go this year, but work commitments stopped me

Really disappointed in the crash that took Ambrose out. After the farse with the balaclavas, I think he had a definite chance of winning. I'm not a Skaife fan, but at least Ambrose's closest Holden rival didn't finish either.

Sad I missed this, although I think I can claim one of the more unusual Bathurst / Mt. Panorama "curios" [;)]

Picked it up last time we went on hols to visit my sis in law who used to live in Bathurst - its a Bathurst 24hr doorbell.... plays a short snippit of one of the Holden V8's revving up. I really like it, but strangely no one else at home was that impressed [8)].... ah well....

Bah, I cancelled my Sky subscription so couldn't watch it. Still, it all went a bit **** after they got rid of the XJS's, VL Commodores, RS500's, M3's and Skylines...!

What's with the sponsor...? Super Cheap Auto Parts. Come on. What happened to James Hardie or Tooheys. Bob Jane T-Marts would be better...!

You're living in the past Wireless.... they haven't had interesting cars running in this 1000km race for ages... ever since the current V8 Supercar formula was instated. Keeps the knuckle-draggers happy though...

It seems we think alike Darryn. Skaife is the one driver that I didn't want to win it. It would have been real interesting at the end if Ambrose and Murphy didn't have their coming together. Ambrose was on a real charge after the balaclava incident and I believe he had the potential to catch and overtake Skaife but sadly it wasn't to be.[:(]

Also a big welldone to Kiwi drivers Mark Porter and Kane Scott for placing 11th. Mark is an old RC racing friend of mine. He is a past New Zealand RC offroad champion. The Schumacher Cat 2000 in my showroom is actually his old car.

Holden may be king of the mountain (until next year) but Ford will win the championship.[;)]

Alex - for what it's worth, I agree 100% with that. Words cannot describe how much Australian Touring Car Racing disappoints me nowadays.

Gone are the days when, as a young lad, I'd get up excited on a Sunday morning in October, get the old slot car set out on the floor in the lounge room, get some munchies, and watch the Great Race on TV with my Dad - from 9am till 5pm. A wide variety of cars were featured. Heck, remember the year (1986) when the race was won by Goss, Walkinshaw and co, in green Jaguar XJ-8s? A great year for Tamiya, and a fascinating year for racing on the TV. Bring back the 80s. [:(]

In 1992, someone decided on behalf of the nation that touring car racing in Australia had always really been about two 'aussie' brands - Ford and Holden - neither of which are Australian owned anyway.

After decades of racing with a variety of cars, it was all reduced to a disgraceful two-horse race - "the way it was always meant to be!" we were told.

This was done mainly to appease an audience who, in the final year prior to the Ford/Holden monopoly, had hurled beer cans and abuse at the podium where Jim Richards' team had beaten the field (including the 'Aussie V8s') with his Nissan Skyline GTR 4WDs. We all remember what he told the crowd in response. But their behaviour was rewarded - they got exactly what they wanted. And so did Ford and Holden. What a sweet little deal. Mullet haircuts all round.

Since then we've had 13 years or so of rubbish, where being a fan of a particular make of car in Australian Touring Car Racing means supporting half the field. It's not that I hate Ford or Holden, I just hate the mentality that monopolised the sport. Once upon a time, even the Ford/Holden supporters had something to get excited about - seeing their charges take on the "best from the world" in a variety of other makes of car. Now, by monopolising, they've lost something of the magic the race once had. Imagine if every FA cup final was played by the same two teams? In the end, who gives a stuff?

It's a sport run by bogans, for the bogans - who seem to think no other cars exist beyond Ford and Holden.

After years of this nonsense, it's now all about propping up aging technology and chasing investment from rich oil families in the middle east, and rich businessmen in China to turn Aussie V8s into a 'global' category. A 'global' category - featuring two brands, representing one specific microculture, from the eastern half of Australia. Good luck. And aging technology because according to mechanics bible - The Dog and Lemon Guide (available from any newsagent for around $30) - even a boring old Toyota Avalon features more technology in it's gear nob, than an Aussie Ford or Aussie Holden engine.

As for old Jim Richards, now over 60 years old - he went on to win several times in Australia's new greatest race - Targa Tasmania - a 2,000 Km tarmac rally race of classic and modern sports cars through some of the world's most picturesque scenery. Everything from classic Lamborghinis to MGBs to Minis to Panteras to Volvos to Celicas to Porsches...now that's racing...

cheers,

H.

I love the Targa Tassie...It's everything Australian touring car racing used to be....Remember the Suzuki swift GTis going around with Cosworth Sierras, M3's and 'Dunny doors'.

Sad really, I used to love the 'Great Race' once upon a time and I do like the V8's, but they really need to inject some diversity into the race..I hate watching 2 brands going round in circles now!

Cheers,

Drew.

I couldnt agree more with that call. No offence to the NASCAR fans but it is mind numbingly boring compared to what we have become used to in NZ and Australia. Wouldnt mind the odd other v8 powered brand thrown into the V8 supercar mix though, might take a few years to get the bugs ironed out for close racing but would still be great to see. [8D]

Until fairly recently (by this I mean the past 10-12 years or so) the Great Race was pretty much an unheard of phenomenon in the uK. Nobody had heard of Mount Panorama or Bathurst over here. I have been a huge fan since, well, 1987 to be precise.

I went to a motor sports store in Tarporley in Cheshire with my dad. It was a small store in the middle of a village that sold accessories for motor sports. We had gone there to buy a new race seat that was to be fitted in the TVR S Cosworth the would be racing in Macau later in the year. I was only 10 years old and was looking through the videos when I saw one I fancied. It had Bastos SD1 Rovers on the cover along with Jaguar XJ-S's and an Eggenberger Sierra Cosworth. The title was "1987 James Hardie 1000".

Dad got his seat sorted out and I pestered him to buy me this video. I remember it was £17 which was quite a lot of money back then for a video casette. Amazingly, my dad agreed to buy me the tape. I say amazing because I very rarely got treats unless it was my birthday or christmas. I think dad felt bad as he just got a nice new seat. Oh, the store by the way was Demon Tweeks before they got big. They are now a huge company supplying motorsports stuff and chav bolt on bits for boy racers.

Anyways, I played this video over and over and over again. It's my favourite video ever so I suppose that gives you an idea of how much I like the '1000. Suffice to say, I still own this tape and it takes pride of place amongst my other Great Race videos which I added last year. I have the 85, 86, 87, 88, 89 and 90 1000's all on VHS. I have transferred them all to DVD too so they don't degrade.

The 1987 is still my favourite - I know it's anorak like, but I can recite the intro to the show by Garry 'Wilco' Wilkinson, his weather details and run up to the grid sheets. Not just that but all off the top of my head I can recite word for work the top 10 grid positions EXACTLY as described by Neil Crompton including the times. Example... :

"This years Hardies Heroes went to one of the Fatherland's finest - Klaus Ludwig. He scorched the mountain in 2 minutes sixteen point nine seven to pick up a cool ten thousand dollars..."

Those races of the 80's with the Jaguar XJ-S in 85, VL Commodore in '86, Sierra RS500 in '87 (or I guess Brocky's VL Commodore as it turned out) right through to Jimmy Richards first run in the 'Computer Car' Skyline GT-R in 1990. It was quite simply FABULOUS touring car racing.

Of course, this is where my fascination for the Sierra RS500 started. As Wilco says on the 87 tape "The European invasion means some of the hottest competition ever for the Great Race" The Eggenberger Texaco cars, the Rouse ANZ car, Oxo Supercube Sierras, Shell ultra-Hi Sierras all the absolute nuts to me and I was only 10. Once day I simply HAD to have one of these.

I also have the two books from the '87 classic. The official and non-official ones - both a good read and a fascinating insight into the race and the time surrounding it.

Here's my collection :

Here's my RS500 :

I was also lucky enough to enter my car in the Concours d'Elegance at the 2005 Fors RS Owners Club National Day. It was the 25th anniversary of the club and my first visit. Half the reason for me going was they had a very special display. About 10 original RS500 Gp.A cars from the 1980's including the Brock/Rouse 1989 Mobil1 Bathurst car, *** Johnson/Andrew Miedecke 1987 Shell ultra Hi car and the Andy Rouse/Alan Moffat car. Anyways, won't bore you anymore...!

outstanding videos, really took me back to my first watching of the great race on World of Sport god knows how long ago.

BUT, I got a couple of problems with the commentators -

Tom Walkinshaw that great Englishman?? muppet....

And Brocky in the zero 5 commodore??? hmmmm

oh, and about the wastegate chirping on his Cossie, why did he lift ??

My Faves though usually invloved Jim Richards, the big black beemers were awesome ! and he was such a character on and off the track.

Oh Jim Richards is unbeievable, still drives his own Semi to the track, drives a racing Kenworth, and has owned the Targa Tasmania in a 911 GT3 for the last 7 years.....he's nearly 60!

'oh, and about the wastegate chirping on his Cossie, why did he lift??'

Because otherwise he would have been like all the other overseas drivers and put it into the wall at the top....He didn't win the race nine times for nothing. [:P] BTW, you can be executed in Australia for making statements like that about Brocky[;)]

Wireless, mate, you almost brought a tear to my eye with that post and that video footage.....You need to be presented with an honorary Four'n'Twenty(meat pie) and VB just for that...LOL[:D]

Excellent!

Yep, Walkinshaw's a Scot of course. Wilco had been commentating for SO long on the Great Race and with Brocky having been in the 05 Commodore for SO long I guess it was just natural to say Commodore rather than RS500 or Sierra.

The wastegate will chirp both when you lift and when maximum boost is reached. Either he had it flat and full boost or was lifting. Generally, the little chirps are when it's venting excess bost and the big chirps are when he lifts.

Mine makes the same noise, just not as loud. I love it [:P]

Yeah, Jimmy Richards. The Black JPS E30 M3 still exists somewhere out in Oz. It's being raced by a Brit out there in some saloon car thing. I have a clip of that too. Gotta love the JPS M3.

If you look in my Showroom at the Porsche 959 entry, you can see apic of Jimmy Richards driving the actual 959 that Tamiya based the model on. Same registration, the lot. I'd love to meet Jimmy Richards, *** Johnson and of course Brocky. Brocky came to the uK earlier this year but I missed him. Gutted. He has here with his 05 VL Commodore as well to go up the Goodwood Hill. *** Johnson sounds like an ascerbic kind of character I bet he's a hoot but would mash your head if you upset him LOL. [B)]

Glad you liked the footage fella...! I plan to get all my '1000 shootouts online and onto my website at www.rs-500.com Just time contrains me now - too much work...!!!

I can remember seeing old Fords ( Escorts etc) and Minis at the great race and thinking what the heck is this place.

First full race I watched must have been on World of Sport, maybe 1987 ish...

too bad about putting in the Caltex Chase though.

Posted

I'm fairly sure someone had a fatal 290+km/h smash at the end of Conrod during practise years ago, and I think they wanted to try to limit the terminal velocity down there at the bottom of the mountain. I can only imagine some of the speeds the V8 supercars would be hitting these days at the bottom of Conrod straight if Caltex Chase wasn't there!

Have you lads raced the circuit in TOCA (or as it's known here V8 Supercars 2)on Xbox or Playstation? That is a lot of fun indeed......

Posted

Yes, this was desperately sad, it was Mike Burgmann, a gentleman racer from Syndey. IIRC he lost it going over one of the rises in Conrod in his VK SS Commodore and hit the concrete support of the JPS bridge on the infield side of the circuit.

Burgmann was the first person to lose his life racing at Bathurst. [V]

RIP Mike

Just for a bit of niggle, Jim Richards is a Kiwi too!

Though unfortunately for us he had to make the move to progress his career and lets be honest that was a great move!

Now if only Greg Murphy could race a audi/skyline/BMW, hec just something different at Bathurst!
