In addition to running my new TL-01 Mustang with a 19-turn, I plan to swap in a new SpeedGems Pro Jet 11-turn for a couple of top speed runs (down the street and back). The car has BBs, universals all around, Deans plugs, and a Traxxas XL-10 ESC.

1. What pinion do I need for such top speed runs?

2. Do I put in the Speed Tuned gear set or run stock gears?

3. Will I nuke a 1500 or 2400mah Ni-Cad or my ESC, even for just a short run? Or should I borrow a 3300 Ni-MH from my friend?

1. Small as possible as otherwise it will be overgeared and not rev up fully.

2. Stock gears for the same reason.

3. Battery capacity doesn't matter, only a better one has lower internal resistance and will give more power => more speed and acceleration.

If you want to go REALLY fast with the TL-01, there are some options to consider (next to buying a F103):

Ball bearings: Of course you have installed them, but you can grease then with lighter oil, I believe aero #10 or so was a good lubricant, but I need backup on this one. Also haven't tried myself yet. Might be worth looking into the ceramic ball bearings too, but this is very expensive for a car which needs so many.

Motor: Buy a good quality motor, rather than a cheap and nasty 11T motor. This is last a lot longer, and will perform lots and lots better. I haven't tested the new V2 endbell motors yet but these seem the way to go looking at what the pro's are using in their cars. Also have some nice gold bullet plugs on your motor, or solder it directly to the ESC. The last option is inconveniet for you as you will need your soldering iron every time you swap motors.

I agree with Theo on all points, but (especially with older packs) it's recommended to check up on them often as they can heat up and melt down quite suddenly. I'm not sure what the motor and bearings you mention are like though, if I stated the obvious, I won't be needing to give you any more advice.  Other than to be carefull, but that's the advice we actually enjoy to ignore. ;)
