A mate asked me why I enjoyed building and restoring as opposed to racing or running these days. I had to think long and hard but eventually came up with a pathetic answer.

I LOVE: The bit where I put the wheels and tyres on, and applying the decals, and going into a trance like state gazing at it when its finished (this can go on for days) 'Late addition' and I really enjoy buiding suspension

I DISLIKE (not hate): spliting gearboxes, picking old decals off, diff grease, liquid theadlock (love the smell though) building old expensive fragile bits.

whats your fav / least fav bit?

Posted

LOVE: all the mechanical bits (chassis, gearboxes, shocks etc) the more metal the better. Also strangely fond of the smell of threadlock [;)]

TOLERATE: electrical stuff, cleaning old parts

CAN'T STAND: painting and decalling. Got nowhere to paint (which is why my three XC bodies are still 'stalled' and I eventually sold the Brat [:(]) and attempts to find a 'tame' bodyshop fell through. Decalling is just plain tedious IMHO (g/f did the last one - she's got the knack and has better eyesight than me)

Likes:

Putting the wheels on.

Pushing the suspension up and down.

Sticking a charged battery in it and using it for the first time (usually before I've actually "finished" building it)

Dislikes

Rebuilding any plastic part that some numpty, hamfisted, knuckle head has done the self tappers up too tight on[:(!]

Rebuilding any gearbox that some numpty, hamfisted, knuckle head has put way too much grease in[:(!]

Taking some large assembly apart because I use the wrong screw in it[:I]

Like: building, including electrics and all (also making my own modclod frame)

dislike: painting and decals....the only part you can screw up on a RC kit.....

That's why you will find unpainted models in my showroom [:I]

I did the decals on my blitzer beetle though...and it came out nice.

My super Champ is next in line for painting/decals [8)] I think I should just do it [V]

I think it is for the same reason I do all things (rebuilds) around the house except for walpaper......

Building nearly everything. As long as I am working constructive it's all fine. Painting and decalling bodies is also great! Even if I spray my own hands... Fixing up an old car and cleaning it toroughly. I'm not affriad to get my hands dirty. I find it interresting to see the before and after pics of my cars. Often I feel I didn't made a difference but when I see the pictures again I prove to myself it really did and that's pretty cool. [:)]

Not really likes:

Electrics. I find these sometimes quite time-consuming. I can't really solder myself much (and don't dare to try with expensive stuff) so I depend on others. I also don't like it when things don't fit or just take up so much time getting it sorted because of a silly little part like a servosaver. [V]

Dislikes:

When people do horrible mods to thier cars before I get them. Having to fix up someone elses mess they made of the car. I can still remember what they did to my Mountaineer or my Corolla, but lot of patience will fix this. Even though I sometimes doubt about 'if it will ever get done', it's always worth it to me in the end - and that's what counts. [;)]

I see many of you seem to dislike panting! I really like doing it! I get very nice result with just simple tools. The key is just preparation and patience. The same for decals - though those often cause a bit of stress and sweat. But as I said it will be so-worth-it in the end... [8D] ...if you don't screw up... [8)]

I like painting and stickering too...[:D] it takes alot of time and alot of effort though. I dont like masking it up, mucking up painting by hand. Painting on alcad by hand (it runs, but thats what you get for using airbrush ready I spose.... Peeling the overmask off, must be a fave! but stickers really make a car....

I Like building it, especially the chassis sections, arms, anything that screws on[:P]. Putting the wheels on and bashing it

I hate E rings, Suspension, Grease and probably more than E Rings Making turnbuckle shafts. Why? they dont just screw on [:(] Having just finished my TB02 im sure I have busted all the nerve tips in my fingers [:(] It takes forever as I set it all up with a digital vernier caliper (sure I spelt that wrong)at least they are all the same now .....

Love those too [8D], as well building new or clean chassis, painting bodies, masking hard bodies and looking at the car on every stage of completion[;)]

Don't like applying decals (not that its very difficult, but find it boring), cutting and masking lexan bodies (second is tough for me [B)], too big hands, too few patience[?]), painting driver figures, disassembling and cleaning dirty or abused cars, rubbing/polishing metal parts, searching for parts or loosing a long time on one section as something doesn't fit or is missing.

Now tht you say it Theo, I honestly find decals often a bit time consuming either, you patience is put to the ultimate test. [;)] I don't really mind cutting lexan shells though, but that's because it's a quickly done job. The pain is over soon enough. [:P]

I'm surprised the amount of people who hate decalling. I set aside a night, normally in front of the telly or with some music, and just get on with it, I find it relaxing, and the end result of looking at the car in it's finished state is the reward. I can take my time, and it helps me unwind from a stressful day job.

Dislikes: Putting on e-clips, and watching the last one ping into nowhere when you've got no spares. Painting the wheels gold (my fault, as it's a sort of theme I've got with all my models, but it means that I have to wait a couple of days before I get the wheels on while the paint hardens).

I think my likes outweigh the dislikes by a lot though, I find it very rewarding putting even a simple kit together, and immensely relaxing too. And you get to play with the end result, can't be bad [:D]

Likes:- Getting a good buy, Opening box, building the chassis, wiring the beasties up (i know i must be sick) I like decaling as well Jozza, nice and relaxing when the telly is on in the background [:D] and making dampers!!! - god i am sick [:I]

Minor dislikes:- putting the tyres on the wheels, too tight for little me, e-rings as jozza they can half fly well [:(!]

Major hates:- Painting... always mess it up [:I] Taking tyres off when some hamfisted yob has used a tube of superglue on each one [:(!] finding broken bits on a resto buy [:(!][:(!] clearing the mess up from the living room floor [:(]

Honestly I don't mind many of the aspects about restoring a car. I guess the one main thing I hate is that when you buy a car and it looks good in the pictures and when you get it, it turns out to be a pile of junk.

like

all mechanical / electrical aspects, fault finding, repairing rebuilding, hopping up, fabricating one off parts

lexan painting, anything that involves freehand work, mine is not very good

Well I like just about all parts of building a car including decals and painting - although I use all my cars so the paint doesn't have to be great as it soon gets cracked. I have sprayed most of my lexan shells in the dark, outside, in sub zero temperatures - that is the biggest HATE of the whole build, why is it always cold and/or wet when I need to paint a shell????????, decals are OK, I just sit in the lounge watching TV and plod on with it, may take a few hours but the end result is worth it. Best part of build has to be the point you drop the shell on the chassis and you sit back and admire. I too can sit for ages looking at it, moving it around to get a view from a different angle etc. My wife thinks I'm mad....... I have all my cars displayed on shelves in the hall and sometime I disappear for ages and wife finds me admiring my collection like some child! Big hate for me is also the c-clips, I even have a proper little tool for extracting the **** things but one always ends up shooting off never to be seen again....usually when you have no spares and you were 5 minutes away from getting the car completed for a run.

E clips! I've got big fingers (excuse that comment, makes me sound like a potato farmer), but to be honest, just very difficult to even pick these things up.

Like pretty much everything else. Im no painting master, but I get pleased with my results, and as I build to run (not to shelve), Im usually satisfied. My decals could do with improving, but its amazing what lacquer does for them

Talking of painting, I have small house, so I gotta put paint as a dislike, purely down to the smell! I was dizzy the other day!

Not sure this is a "build" hate, but as I have just smashed my TL01 chassis, I HATE the fact I gotta totally take the thing to absolute pieces to fix it. But then, thats my fault for crashing it I suppose.

Love putting wheels on. Love putting first battery in. Love just staring at it for days when finished.

I really love the whole process of building, and can't understand you guys who don't like painting and decaling - it's fun watching a nude shell turn into the finished article. Maybe it's the fear of screwing up the shell, since often mistakes can't easily be undone?

Have to agree though, I hate E-clips! How many times on hands and knees scouring the floor trying to find one that's decided to fly off... Someone had the idea of putting your hands into a clear plastic bag to put on the E-clip so it doesn't go flying, will have to try that.

Oh, and putting tyres on 1-piece wheels is a pain.

I especially like building gearboxes, plus fancy bits like stabilizers.

LIKE--- tearing apart cleaning and rebuilding, since my only nib was when I was 15, all my new cars are someones old ones.

HATE--- scraping off silicone that some idiot used because the body mount broke. This happened on two of my three rebuilds.

LOVE--- finishing the body, paint decals etc and looking at the model from every angle and even sometimes different elevations. And then the first run with the finished product.

REALLY HATE--- bringing that new rebuild back to the house covered in dirt, grass, full of stones, and with a scratched body and realizing that the whole thing has to come apart again if I ever want it to look good again.

oh, by the way I need to send a special thanks out to sgnas for the boomerang drive gear that i was whining for. It arrived very fast, and saved me from having to use the car as a 4wd paper weight. And on top of this he wouldn't even accept any money for the part! a true gentleman indeed! hopefully one day I will be able to return the favour.

Like: Setting up the shockers. Nothing handles as well as a car with well set up shockers.

Dislike: The e-clips used to hold the pin on the lower wishbone on the TA-04.

dislike- setting up steering servos wrong and having to go all the way back to sort it out. especially if it is fiddly and ya end up striping your fingers of skin trying to get em into the gap. lol Oh and working on the front gearbox of a TL-01. WHAT??"?" i can't be doing with having to split the carin half to work on some gears.

Kay, first posting here.

Like: puttin the wheels on, getting those real pimp rims that really look bizar, cleaning the car after a drive on the parking-lot.

Dislike: waiting for those hop-ups to arrive. Here in Holland its very difficult for instance to get the alu.prop. shaft for the tt-01.

Yesterday I installed the Toe-In Rear Uprights and experienced that my car can really drive in a straight line [:)]
