I have recently sold some cars, and have decided that I'd like a quick leccy MT.

The contenders are:

Wild Dagger / Twin Det (with ESC and quick motors)

Emaxx (Too expensive new, only if a cheap 2nd hand comes up)

E-Zilla (Again, too expensive, although it looks like the best option atm)

Can anyone shed any light on the total price of a decent WD upgrade procedure (ESC, motors)

Thanks

twin detonator is an awesome truck moded, mine is running at 14.4 now,  maxs around the high 20's low 30's mph[:D] i'd say about 30 mph (at a guess)

have a look here matey www.rcdaggerweb.com [:)]

A good twin ESC (Silver Star Ultra) will set you back around £50 plus postage.

There are plenty of others up to the job, but I use them a lot and have yet to hear of any problems with them.

They'll handle down to twin 17's I think, although you'll need to ask elsewhere for motor advice - I know two sorts, kit stocks and Mayhems [:D]

Hi torque steering servo from £10 upwards, for a Towerpro (ebay)

I would say that although initially more expensive, the E-Maxx or E-Zilla is still the best option.  By the time you get the Wild Dagger or Twin Detonator up to specs it would probably be cheaper to go with one of the others.  Although, they aren't Tamiya's [;)].  I used to own an E-Maxx a few years ago and it was well worth the money and a blast to drive, in fact I miss it.

I have to agree here.  although I had the T-maxx, my friend had an e-maxx that was a blast to drive.  it's a bigger truck with more suspension plus there are ten zillion hop up parts available for it.

Shodog and others, thanks for the replies.

RE: Bigger Truck, I appreciate that it is a little (3cm) bigger than the E-Zilla and Wild Dagger. Really, I'd like an EMaxx, but at £300 new, and not many 2nd hand, it's not looking good...

That was my reason for going with an EZilla, as these are around £210 new.

Looking into the specs. of the EZilla, I found the wheelbase to be almost identical to the WD, so then I thought why spend £210 to essentially get a WD with an aluminium chassis and another battery pack onboard...

Can anyone comment on an EZilla / EMaxx shootout?

Thanks

I've had a talk to my Mum about it, and I've come to the following plan:

Get a cheap WD / TD.

Buy 2 x 21T motors, and a twin motor / twin battery esc for £50 posted for the lot

Install above and wohay, a WD with 14.4V, twin 21T motors and plenty of spares availible for just a tad over £100 - bargain :)

For price I would say the Twin Det/Wild Dagger would be a good option. The Ezilla and Emaxx are IMO better, but as you say they are more expensive, and you have to have twice as many stickpacks to keep them running..

Be careful with your choice of motor though, if you are going for a hopped up motor remember that one of them will be running in reverse. If the motors you get are not rebuildable with adjustable timing, the one running in reverse will simply slow the truck down. Mag Mayhems are a great motor, as you can get them in reverse rotation, but they have been discontinued and therefore aren't easy to find.

For ESC, any decent one which will handle the turn of your chosen motor / 2 will be fine, you don't need a 2 motor specific ESC. I've run a Mtronics RV Max in my Twin Detonator with Mag Mayhems for a couple of years with no problems, in the same time I've had to send 2 Mtronics Truck ESCs back for warranty repair..

Worthwhile hopups for the TD/WD include alloy suspension upper arms, I've found the plastic ones have a tendancy to come loose, and then the dogbone falls out somewhere in the middle of a field never to be found again. I've just got some nice alloy bits from HK, the other hopup I'm thinking of is CVDs to lessen the chance of losing the drive bits in the field. You can also get ally chassis for it, but I've run the plastic chassis for years and it's been fine.

You don't get twin battery capability, but to be honest the truck doesn't need it - with some faster motors and the larger pinion it's quite rapid, but it won't quite match the Ezilla for speed. There is a carbon chassis available with twin stickpack cutouts if you want to go that route though.

You should've asked this a few days earlier Sammy, I've just sold my Wild Dagger complete with Mag Mayhems [:)] - my Twin Det isn't up for sale (at the moment [;)]) because I like it, I've got an Ezilla, but the Twin Det is still one of my favourite trucks.

Ah, that's a real shame, I'd have loved to have your ole' wild dagger... ;)

I'll look out for an RV Max, saw one on TimeTunnel's eBay listings, but was put off by the "NOT SUITABLE FOR TWIN MOTORS" line - I guess Neil just puts this to cover himself :)

Thanks, and I'll keep y'all updated

Yep, I've noticed the disclaimer on the RV Max too, but it's been a reliable performer for me. See http://www.teamnovak.com/tech_info/how_to/...tors/index.html for some useful info on using dual motors on an ESC, it shows how to wire in parallel and series, and the advantages of each method, and also explains the speedo ratings needed when using dual motors. So long as the ESC you get is a good quality one which can handle a high current draw it will be fine, the motors on the Twin Det don't draw a major amount of current as the truck is small and light in comparison to an Emaxx or Ezilla.

Sorry to double post, but now decided what I'm doing [:)]

Twin Det rolling chassis

RV Max ESC

Use stock, see how I find performance.

If need more speed, go looking for other motor setup!

Cheers.

have you spoke to maverick / knighthauler as didnt he post on the forum he had a emaxx to sell, it might be worth to see what he wants, i've seen it in action and its awesome. i'd love one but pennies are short

Twin Detonators/WIld Daggers are great trucks, fitted with new shock towers and 4 inch shocks they are massively improved, then all you need is faster motors (recommend 19 turns :) ) and a Silver star ultra esc (cheap at less than £55, and will handle 2x 17 turn motors or a single 10 turn.)

Yep, I couldn't fault my dagger when I had it. One of my best trucks for bashing madly.

I put a Silverstar ESC in it, which I really liked. I then upgraded to the larger 20t (?) pinions, and two Mag Mayhems. I didn't really find the M Ms to be anything special however. The speed still wasn't brilliant, although an increase over the standard motor, and I never really noticed/needed the torque. The person that I sold it on to said that they put two Venom Fireball 17turns in it, which are much faster, and better in his opinion, and you can get two of them for the price of one Mag Mayhem.

The only thing with the Silverstar ESC was that I (My dad [:D] ) had to make some more motor wires for it. But it wasn't too much of a hassle.

Yep, bloke from Mtroniks suggested that! Although, a lot of people seem to get away with it, they won't swap them under warranty if you fry them and two motor wiring is evident.

if you do decide to upgrade the motors i'd go for the venom fireball 17x2 motors i had a pair in my wild dagger and it was exteamly fast

there set at 0deg and there ballraced at the factory the 0 deg setting means you can run one in reverse with no problems

I am a Tamiya guy but would choose the E-Zilla, by far better chassis then WD/TC and alot cheaper. When you compare the prices you should add also 2 batteries, special charger for simultaneous charging of 2 packs, RC unit, twin motor ESC for the WD/TD, which would propably bring you up to a similar amount and you would have an inferior car compared to the Ezilla, plastic chassis and small suspension travel.

Yep, agree with Theo better to start high and leave it than start low and upgrade which is in the the long run much more expensive.

Even because the E-Zilla comes RTR you could sell the radio gear and use the ones that would be used with the Twin Det?

Also the performace acheived with the Zilla would be incomparable with a modded Twin Det.

I own a EZilla, and it is the best BANG for the money! I would go that route out of what you listed! You will not have to buy anything for it but 8AA batteries!

I owned a TMaxx, forget it, they are junk and have too many issues. I now own a REVO and love it after my .26 Conversion, but they are way more money than a Maxx, so that is out of the picture.

I can not speak for the other two, as I have never owned them, but they are Tamiya, so I say you can't go wrong! [;)]
