Please notice that the left(!) part has been put into Coca Cola for about 10 hours. Made some noise the first 2 hours. Has anyone a better idea?

I would recommen a ultrasonic cleaner, use this on all my small-and-bigger metal bits.

and does the trick very well.

These days the "new versions" are not as expenive anymore also as the old ones use to be.

I'm quite interested in the ultrasonic cleaner method and have wanted to try it for a while, how well does it work ?

Do you have any photos of parts you've cleaned ?

I use it in general to clean up the (metal) tracks from the tanks, as you don't want to take them appart after building them again :)

Basicly, it -shakes- all dirt out, also from places you can't get to with normal cleaning (hollow spaces ect) as it it cleaning without touching it.

I am sounding like the add now LOL ..

At this moment no photo's, must find dirty piece of vintage tamiya metal/plastic now ehhhmmm , i'll have to get back on that one.

(or, if it is not 2 cartons full ;) i don't mind giving your parts a run in the cleaner of course) unless you doing a once in a lifetime project i would say buying one is money well spend.

In short, i am happy with it, i'll return with pictures and better tekst if requered:)

Coool, It'd be great to see some pics. Is the cleaner the same as the kind that's used to clean jewllery ?

That's one of my favourite things about restoring these old cars, learning about the various techniques and learning new ways to make old things look new.

Yep, same thing, only less pro as the "big one's" are very expencive (and better i think :) )

At this moment a dirty old brat gearbox is shaking in the cleaner, later on the evening i'll have some pictures for the intrested.

maybe a bit overload on the cleaner with diffrent kinds of grease in it.

See how it turns out

the whole "coca cola" is acid thing is a hoax. i mean really, you drink it.

Ever try leaving a dirty old coin in Coca Cola for a while? You'll be amazed at how clean it gets because of the acidic qualities of the drink.

Thanks for the pictures Stefan, have you tried it on SRB parts too ?

And tarznatz...

the whole "coca cola" is acid thing is a hoax. i mean really, you drink it.

There's acid in coke for sure, just not a great deal, there's loads of acidic foodstuff, for example...lemon juice, vinegar, car battery pie.

Ok, so I made the last one up :)

Then of course there's the gastric acid that occurs naturally in the stomach.

A while ago I tried vinegar to clean a Sand Scorcher axle, left it in over night and in the morning found the vinegar had eaten holes in it !

I think perhaps the Coke hoax / myth you're thinking of is that there used to be Cocaine in Coca Cola, but they're both made from the coco plant so who knows if that's true or not.

Another food / drug thing is poppy seed bread, made from opium poppies, same plant that opium and heroin comes from. Opium poppies grow wild near where I live, I remember a friend once thought it'd be a good idea to smoke some as an "experiment"...

He turned green and trembled for 12 hours.

I don't think there's any disputing the fact that coke is acidic, the urban myths on that web page seem to relate only to the exaggeration of the amount of acidity it has.

Anyway, my point was that just because something has acid in it doesn't make it inedible.

Mr Pushrod, me thinks you would have to sit that coin in the coke for a good long while...

It won't do it instantly but over a few days it will come clean, it's an experiment shown to school kids!

Don't know what Coke you guys are drinking, but here's a link to the supposed Coke as a cleaning agent / safety hazard Urban Legend:

Have you ever watched Mythbusters!

This one

To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers:

Rub the bumper with a crumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

does actually work.

As said lemon juice (or actually most fruits) or vinaigar are acidic, most fluids are acidic (PH<7) or basic (PH>7) as less are neutral like water (PH=7) Even normal water isnt exactly 7 as it have salts (ions).

About poppy seed bread (which I personally like, am I addicted, please tell me doctor!? [:P]), they had someone eat at TV and later he wouldn't pass a drug test for the next 12 hours or so! [:o]

Tru, saw the same show (cola ect) , and it appairs to be a good chrome cleaner :)

Do prefer the shows with distruction & stupid plans or in general a lot of fire & explosions [:D]

Back to the cleaning, for all-metal parts i also use a industrial cleaner, that they use to clean up the floors of gas stations (ehhmm.. where you fuel your car)

Don't have a brand from it, as i get my yearly dose in a unmarked bottle, but if you know somebody who works in a gas station, i'll bet he can help you out.

WARNING.. that stuff is toxic, they muar use breath-mask's when cleaning the floor. It fully melts down plastics or anything not metal to -nothing-

nasty stuff, but... hey.. it works!

Hmmmm, I've been watching this thread, and i'm wondering what HydroChloric acid would do to the SRB cast parts?

I don't have any spares i can test it on! LOL.

I use oven cleaner. First let it work an hour and then I take steel wool for polishing. Look at my 1/8 buggies.

I wouldn't recommend oven cleaner on Sand Scorcher metal parts, when I tried it, it turned them black and being caustic it also caused further corrosion.
