After seeing quite a lot of coverage recently re 'drifting', I have unearthed my ageing TL01-chassis Alfa Romeo Tourer (completely standard, as Tamiya intended!!) and plan to give it a new lease of life.  I have ordered a ballrace kit as this seems to be the 1st thing everyone suggests but would like some advice on a good ESC/motor combination to give me better acceleration/low speed grunt.  I don't plan on racing the car, it's just for fun but your suggestions would be appreciated.

Price wise I would look at the mtronics range of esc's and for motors would look into the venom range (around £12).  So maybe the Mtroniks viper eco 20 (around £23 from Modelsport) and a venom 21 turn motor would be  a good start if looking into drifting.

firstly welcome to the club, i'm sure your stay will be long and fun. i have had the same problem as yourself a year aago, and i opted for various combo's. i found the mtronics tourer 20 esc to be top stuff for about 20 quid and maybe a super stock RZ 23 turn motor, or the equivelent, depending on budget, i do like the mtronics stuff though they are good quality, usually waterproof, (which is good for my style driving) and they are easy set up and have a host of features.

the guys on here are top, i'm sure they wont point you in the wrong direction, after all i'm still pretty new and i aint lost my way since joining here.

again welcome

Welcome to the TL01 world.  I used to have one as well, I added a 19 turn Chameleon motor, full bearings and a Novak Rooster ESC.  This pumped it up to a good speed but still gave decent run time and made it more fun.  I'm a truck guy so the car was sold off [;)].

Thank you for the warm welcome, I hope I don't cause any upset with seemingly 'simple' questions!!  Once I have purchased my choice of upgraded gear (which will more than likely be something suggested to me on here!!), what fitting instructions (if any) tend to be supplied, or do I figure it out for myself ?  I have the original manual for the model but this does not seem to have much scope for explaining fitment of hop ups.

In terms of fitting the bearings, you basically replace every white plastic bush and the one metal bush with the ballraces, it should become clear when you have the car apart.

Don't worry.  ESC's come with supplied instructions, and you simply bolt a new motor in place of the old one.  Bearings, as previously stated replace the white bushings.  It's pretty self explanatory.

Thanks for the advice, the weekend (assuming postal delivery makes good time!) should see some quality tinkering time. I'm looking forward to Mr J Sainsbury closing 4pm Sunday to see how successful I've been.

hi, welcome to the club, ive just restored a wreck of a TL01 that was given to me, but not had chance to run it yet, (more of a buggy/truck guy) you will have to let us know how you get on.

Have fun!

Hi chaps, after what seems like an eternity (due to work, marriage plans, unexpected vists from distant relatives etc etc) the TL-01 is back together having been stripped to it's components, cleaned and rebuilt with the Mtroniks Viper Eco 20 ESC and ball raced.  I cannot believe what a difference even just these 2 'upgrades' have made (thanks again for the advice BTW), it's definitely given me the bug to see just how much I can get out of this model.  Motor is next on the list to take full advantage of some newly-acquired drift tyres (thanks Mr_Pushrod) and I am also considering my next vehicle - something for a bit of off-road bashing, as large areas of tarmac are scarce 'round my way !!

Welcome to the club!!

I'll agree with you on the bearings and ESC. they are great upgrades.

I stuck a team orion 23 turn motor with my ESC and this seemed like a good pairing.

As long as you keep the number of turns of the motor higher than the rating of the ESC you should be o.k., but it's best to not have it right on the line (although opinion on this seems to be divided)

23 turn, or 21 turn and this will really make you laugh at the difference it makes.

good luck
