Im looking into building a racer ( Clod axles etc ) Im just curious what the fundamental differences are between a racer and a crawler. I.e. Chassis differences, Suspenion lay out etc....

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Fundamental difference is the suspension set-up.  Crawlers have soft supple suspension that has articulation you can't believe.  Crawlers have locked differentials to allow traction on all four tires.  Some also gear reduction units, low tooth pinion gears and motors with great torque.  This means tons of pullin power little speed.  Crawler chassis' are specific to crawling, four link suspension and 4 wheel steering.

Racers are built somewhat different.  Although the chassis style is similar in some circumstances it is how the set-ups are.  Suspension is the key difference along with electronics used.  Here are some examples of different types:
