Since I`m somewhat of a newbie, I was wondering why they don`t allow reversible esc`s? I ask cause I would like to start racing offroad this summer, and maybe indoors next winter, looks like a good way to have fun. This time of year we`re buried in snow up to our knees, and -15 degrees celsius weather and I`m starting to get anxious!!!!!**** winter!!!!Aargghhhhh!!!!! I just wanna have fun too[:(]lol.

They dont allow reverse because when you use reverse you are putting

your car into oncoming traffic - and the resulting collision is unbfair

on the innocent, following driver.

Another more recent reason not to use reverse is that most racers use

shotcky diodes - and as soon as the motor goes into reverse the diode

goes upo in a cloud of smoke!![st]

So what do the schotky diodes do?

I've seen them mentioned, but what are they for?

Just wondering

A Schottky

diode helps reduce the amount of high voltage spikes from the motor that

could reach your speed control; these spikes can contribute to premature

ESC failure. The reduced spikes also would increase the motor commutator

life.

Reverse is officially not allowed, and the reasons are stated above.

Most clubs don't bother with policing this rule, especially for

beginners. When racing there are marshalls to turn your car around when

it gets stuck so reverse isn't really that necessary. Also forward only

ESCs are more efficient (much less electrical resistance) so once you

can geta round without hitting the barriers a forward only ESC will

give you faster race times.
