The ones from Tower hobbies ARE metric .5mod pinions, they just look, at first glance, like 48dp, I think 48dp are something like .487mod.

Anyone tried RW Racing for some?

The stock pinions don't have a hard coating, I got 48dp pinions that are years old and used week in week out, and show no sign of wear, any Tamiya pinion I use is noisey within a few meetings.

I wish shops would describe things properly! Looking at it they are as you say. Thanks for the info. A possible purchase, though I think the lower tooth ones are a little too small to put on a Dark Impact. If someone buys them please give them a quick review. It would be good to know the smallest size that will fit.

Aw! You edited your post!

There really isn't much space for motor adjustment in a DI. Thats why I was wondering what the smallest possible pinion was. I think 21t is the smallest with the 82t spur from trying things out. Wonder what the smallest is with an 85t spur?

0.4, 0.5 and 0.6 plus 0.8 or 1. These are Tamiya's measurements for their pinion gears.

0.4 is used on Dyna Storm/Blaster, option on F102 and TA03TRF. 64p fits.

0.5 is used on Dark Impact and Super Astute only. No other pinion measurement fits. 48p is bigger.

0.6 is used on most of Tamiya's cars like TA01 series, Avante series and so on. 48p is smaller.

0.8

is used in old Tamiya cars like Hot Shot series, Frog, Thunder Shot

series. I don't remember well if the right number is 0.8 or

1. 32p fits

So there'n no way to change pinion measurement on Dark Impact without changing the spur gear.

Robinson Racing makes steel 0.6 metric pinion gears. They are sold by Tower Hobby like 48p metric but they have nothing to do with 48p. They are direct fit to 0.6 metric.

When will UK and USA switch to normal and international standard measurements?

Hope I helped you

Thanks for that. Seems I was right after all!

I don't just wish that the UK (Europe) and the USA will switch to standard measurements, but that Tamiya not keep changing theirs also!

Some people have adapted their DI to take 48dp gears so they have more choice of spur. I think there's a picture of one on Bender's website.

Kontemax, you are right 0.8 module is effectively 32dp, which is twice the size of the 0.4 / 64dp combination.

Gary (GSMStorm) on these forums makes a gear adaptor to run 48dp gears, as shown on my website, but obviously wont work if you want to use the slipper.

I've just noticed that Kawada in Japan have released a slipper adaptor kit for the DI. It uses slipper pegs similar to the slipper clutches on old Traxxas buggies. It has an adaptor that allows you to use 48dp gears, as long as there are holes in them for the slipper pegs.

The link below is a pdf file showing the parts and assembly instructions:

Buy one of these from RW Racing

And you can use one of these, AE B4

I agree - It was a good ~$45 well spent.  There is an unlimited choice when it comes to spur and pinion gears.

The gear on the lay shaft of my Tamiya slipper MAY be wearing out quite quickly. Of course it may be the dust from the summer, but the teeth aren't very smooth anymore.

I think anyway there are enough gear ratios for the Impact. There are 3 different spurs and 18, 19, 20 ,21, 22, 23, 24, 26, 27 teeth pinion gear with 0,5 module if I remember well.

Hi i am running a super stock rz (23 turn) in mine what is the best pinion / spur gear combination i have the 23t 25t 27t and 29t pinions to choose from and the 2 spur gears that come with the dark impact. The car is used for fun not racing on gravel and dry muddy surfaces thanks. Advice much appreciated

on a 19t, I am on an 81/28 due to the high internal ratio.

There was two reasons for moving to the B4 setup, one is that spur gears are so easy to come by, and so are the pinions.  The other reason is that in my experience of Tamiya gears, they wear real quick.

I notice on another forum 'Grahoo's' very stylish and well constructed DI is Tamiya Buggy King world champ. The car was actually driven by a friend of his. Congratulations to you both.

If you're getting noise from your rear gearbox, check for excessive movement from the layshaft. I noticed this last night, it was caused in part to slop in the gearbox body. Both the main section and the top cover have now been replaced and it's quite a bit quieter. I think most of the noise is now from the slightly worn layshaft teeth. Tamiya should make a gearbox from stronger plastic.

I'm currently waiting for Tamiya to release the turnbuckle set.

P.S. Nice looking chassis Neo (I can see it in your showroom). Are you going to give it a go at the CML Raceway?

Elliot, im in two minds to give it a go, im awaiting my B4FT.

Dont know how it would fare against the big boys.

Not quite a TRF501X but its good enough for me [H]

****, I can't help but marvel over that chassis!  Makes me want one so much, and they're only $80 on Ebay.  Guess I will keep saving...

I believe they are sold separately. That doesn't look bad at all.

In case you thought I was making all this up, I've just uploaded pics of my DI to photobucket. They should be available here:

http://s147.photobucket.com/albums/r303/ElliottHopkins/

The paint is Pactra's racing red, rushed and blotchy. Minor hop-ups include Tamiya DF-03 threaded shocks, DI slipper clutch, smaller than stock Tamiya dish wheels with Ballistic minispikes (welcome to England) and (essential) 3 Racing Ti screws. Modest upgrades in importamnt areas thus far. In terms of electorincs, LRP IPC V7.1 (still the best speedo ever made, I don't trust speedos I could hide under my small change), Hitec Gem receiver a perfect fit, KO metal gear servo and normally a Peak Dynasty 19T spec V2 dalek head. All good stuff.

P.S. Because I can't comment on anybody's showroom pics, I'll do it here. Nice FINISHED car Neo, what paint did you use?

Neo, are the shock mounts included in the chassis kit?

Nope, the blue shock mounts are'nt included. Although, you do get mounting hardware included.

Nice DI you have there on photobucket Elliot [H]

I had my first race meeting at the CML Raceway today. In practice, I had a little crack with the DI. It handled really well. It was raining heavily most of the day and when I got out of shape on a few of the slippery jumps, I could correct myself well. When I took a corner badly. I could correct it. The Dark Impact flattered my driving. I might run it in the summer.
(By the way, I haven't had any experience of contemporary 4WD cars, so I wouldn't have anything to compare it with, but I was pleased with it).
Elliott.
P.S. jr-rc has the Tamiya turnbuckles available for the DI. They look nicer than the 3 Racing versions, but they are twice the price.

I've got some 'mad skillz'. I've just swapped the worn metal gear on the slipper layshaft with the gear from kit layshaft. The gear and shaft are in two parts. I popped the gears off the shafts with a hammer and a punch and the gear sat on a vice. Then I put the newer gear back onto the slipper shaft again with a hammer.

Minimal damage to the gear (it needed a bit of filing) and I think the shaft is still straight. A nice fit back in the gearbox, with almost zero lateral slop.

I'm quite happy with my work. The gearbox sounds a lot better.

Is my post the most popular ever on this forum? hehe

My DI still has radio gear in it and when I get back to Australia it will be used more at the local track. Till then guys, keep the DF-03 burning!!
