Hi there,

I am building a Clod based Gecko 60/40 crawler (for crawling not racing) and need advice on an esc for it.

Want to run a pair of 55turn lathe motors c/w stock pinions and eventually 2 hi-torque servos for 4ws.

I am unsure which esc's i should get? (not wanting to spend a fortune either)

Do i use an esc that runs twin or single battery packs.

Also i dont want to get cought up in the series or parallel debate so i would prefer an esc that has wires for each motor but thats not too important i suppose.

Does an esc have anything to do with the servo's ( i have read threads that mention a BEC voltage, so does an esc have anything to do with the control of steering servos ?) yea i know that probably sounds like a stupid question but we all start somewhere and im not sure what this BEC is that keeps creeping up in threads when folk are talking esc's

I am in the Uk and if anyone here has an esc that is up to the job please feel to reply and let me know what you have ! prefer Uk due to the cost of delivery from outside but if you have the right esc at the right price (including delivery to the Uk) maybe we can deal.

Thanks for reading and maybee i'll get a reply or two.

Hi mate,

Got to say, someone on here (Twinset or Biggusditchus) recommended the Silverstar Ultra ESC.  It works fine with the Hitec High Torque servos but no good for the Tower Pro ones (only puts 4.8v out).  Had it in 2 Gecko crawlers, and Richytanimal has used it as well.

Advantage is that it is only £50 or so new from Modelsport!  Very good little unit.  twin motor limit 17t, single motor unlimited (I think, or could be 11t???).

Hope this helps

if your using hitec servo's then the silver star ultra or ripmax xtra no limit are both good esc's but if you go for the towerpro servo's then i think the only option is going to be a novak either way it costs lots the towerpro servos are cheap but the esc with 6v output will cost loads or the other way is the hitec servo's cost loads and the esc can be a £40-50 job

The silverstar esc is a cracking esc and fine for crawling, but I have blown 2 up in my fast clod running 19 turn motors, after having them back from repair they came back with the note "Over Amped"... I spoke in person to the guy who makes them and he hasnt ever said that they can cope with twin 17turn motors or for that matter one 10 turn. That information about the motors came from Modelsport and is incorrect, so if wanting to run fast motors you either have to run them motors in parallel but with more cells with a seperate battery pack for receiver (if doing this have to remove red wire from esc out of receiver plug) OR buy a novak.

I still think for the price they are the best esc for crawling.  My other clod runs a SIlverstar Ultra esc running Integy Lathe Motors, on a side not I also use towerpro servos with no problem turning the wheels (again you could always run a seperate 6v receiver pack should you want, again just taking red lead from esc out of receiver plug)

Thanks for your replies.

Im still a wee tad on the confused side, but had already thought about the hi-tec servo's and silverstar combination !

So am i correct with this package, as in the silverstar and hi-tec servos will work ok (i wont be doing any racing as this is purely a rock and other object crawler NOT a racer)

I am aiming for a pair of 55turn lathe motors but with stcok grearing and pinion for now, will that be ok (slow but with torque) for crawling ?

Does anyone have a diagram or good pics showing how i should wire things up, if i go down the silverstar line.
