Hai guys,

I want to use a Lipo on one of my cars because of reducing the weight.

It has a 5,5t Brushless Novak.

From what I have heard and read, Lipo's can't provide the high current which is needed for this kind of motors.

Is that correct?

Am I forced to use a Nicad/NiMH for that matter?

LiPos can provide more than enough current, but you do need ones

designed for the job, such as the FMA Scorpion or Team Orion Platinum

LiPos, neither of them are cheap.

As they have 7.4v instead of NiMhs 7.2v there is more punch and lots

more duration. Here's Car Actions review of the Orion Platinum

Don't forget you will need a LiPo compatible charger as well.

Many thx Terry!

Very nice read.

Also nice to read it almost equals the price (performance vs capacity).

After all, it's "new" technology so you have to pay for that.

I prefer the FMA Scorpion because of it's built-in safety.

I contacted my local dealer and he told me ********, that's for sure...

Indeed, I have to buy a new charger.

I really have to think about it.

Thx again!

Wonder what run times i will get out of the Brat :P)

English weather is great,it stopped  pouring down with rain and has now dried up.

I have just run the first pack of Orion Platinums, the car is a TT01R fitted with the Nosram Storm, brushless motor, speedo combination,it is geared at it`s lowest, 19T pinion 61T spur for acceleration,it managed a full 20 mins run time and performance is remarkable. The tyres were well hot and looking a bit worn out lol.

There was quite a lot of heat generated from the motor ,speedo and the pack, but nothing near as hot as low wind brushed motors.

First impressions are very good.

Good news then.

The reviews are also very positive about the performance.

I think it has the maximum runtime when using brushless set-ups.

could i use a Lipo with a BRUSHED set up? Say an MSonik 11t ESC and a 17t Motor?

Mike

Sure, why not?

They say the battery won't heat up as much as with a Nicad/NiMH.

For the brushed motor/ESC...I presume it will be HOT!!!

The main thing if your running a brushed set up is ,the speedo will not have a cut off voltage for lipo`s.You must not run Lipo`s flat,it kills them dead.I don`t see a problem ,but as soon as you see the car start to slow, you must stop.

There seems to be only two things i can fault about Lipo batterys.

1.They have long charge times compared to Nicads or NimH.

2.The fear of a nasty chemical fire if dead shorted or seriously over charged ( i have had charger failure before)They really need to be wached over whilst charging (just in case)

IMHO ,for performance and weight saved they are worth it.

So what are the most inexpensive ac chargers you fellas can recommend for these as I am sitting on the edge of getting a pack or two of the new Team Orion 4800 Li Po's.  If I do get two packs I will only be able to afford a cheap AC charger, so which is recommended ?

( I just completed a Thundertech rage chassis and I want to juice it up as much as possible )

The FMA Scorpion has a built-in safety for this kind of voltage drops (LVC=Low Voltage Cutoff).

However, you can drive back with the remaining power, clever thinking.

IF I'm going to buy a Lipo, it will be this one (for now).

I think the main reason for overheating your motor and/or ESC because of the longer runtimes and increased punch for a longer period of time.

The second one doesn't count, the same  is true for Nicad/NiMH (even worse).

I think the high starting price (you also have to buy a new charger) is a big disadvantage.

So still two, LOL![;)]

I purchaced the Prolux,Digi-charge 104 . Retail is about £85 but it will do 1-10 cell Ni-cad,NimH,1-4 cell Lipo and led acids 2v - 6v and 12v, It`s mains or 12v input ,cooling fan built in and a good selection of cables.Works well so far.Time to get shut of all my old chargers :o)
