Help, I have never changed from a standard motor in any of my tamiya kits but would like to put a raven 15 by 2 in with a mtroniks rv15 esc into my dark impact.

Do i need to change pinion or spur gear? I would like to get the right balance for acceleration and top speed.

Any suggestions?

I ended up building it with standard the standard motor, I have found the handling very good and the turn in is brilliant but the performance is very slow. I was surprised to find its slower than my standard hornet! I did once put my 15 turn motor in my hornet but it didnt make it any quicker. It obviously needed a different pinion.

I am going to try it in the dark impact now and see if its any good without changing anything else.

Is everyone else using the standard pinion and spur gear?

Went well with 15 turn motor in. until it got very hot and melted the motor wires together.

Anyone got any sugestions?

I tried putting esc and receiver on opposite sides it did help a little but it still over heats and cuts out. I have now ordered an esc with an 11 turn limited to see if that works. ordered a 17 turn motor as well just in case it doesnt. next thing i will try is different size pinions. If that doesnt work i am ordering rc10 b4 rs which looks a lot better spec and comes with a 17 turn motor to start with. Its a shame but the tamiya stuff look like toys compared with other makes.

looks like this is just the bovver page

Any body out there?

The problem with the wires melting and overheating is because the

standard pinion is way too big for the motor. The ESC has a 15 turn

limit and a 15 turn motor will put the most load on it so it does need

to be geared correctly. Just changing to an 11 turn ESC will likely

have the same result, it would just take longer before it cuts out.

Remember you will need to get 0.5 module pinion gears for it.

The standard motor in the Dark Impact will make it slower than the

Hornet when bashing, the Hornet is lighter and has a more efficient

gearbox (less gears) so will be faster in a straight line. Around a

track though the Dark Impact will put the power down better and will

get around it much faster.

Using  11 turn esc, 15 turn motor, 23t pinion and the 85t spur gear.

Still gets too hot though.

Tried a 17 t motor but it only lasted 20 min and wont work again

Have not seen any pinions less than 23 for it.

not sure what to do now.

I would like to run my Schumacher 17T in my Dark Impact with Mc 330 cr Futaba ESC (handles down to 13t motor), don't have any hop up gears etc so hoping it will all be ok, I'll let you know how I go!

That said, anyone noticed on first page of build instructions that you need 3 x MK10 (the foam cylindrical pieces), I can only see 2 and a half being used!!  Are there supposed to be 1 and a half in each side of the ball diff?  From the diag it looks like one in the top and 1 and a half in the bottom.....would someone please let me know what you have done?

Cheers

I woud think you are going to have overheating problems just like me.

As for the foam cylindrical pieces what i did is use one in the top and one and a half in the bottom. if you look at page 8 the front is the same. all it does really is takes up some of the slck from the dog bones

Well, just completed the DI and gave it a quick run around the garden.  Seemed darn quick with my Schumacher 17t motor....eveything else is standard on it (except the Futaba MC330 esc and I opted for soft damper oil instead of the hard stuff supplied).

Didn't seem to overheat at all but would need to give it a longer run to make sure.  I'll let you know if I experience any overheating like you....or have you got it sorted now?

My kit is the fully ballraced version; however, on completing the build I have a small plastic tube with 4 small bearings left over in it...........Doh!!!  I have looked long and hard but cannot suss out where these should go......can someone please let me know!!!  Cheers in advance.

No not yet, haven't had time.  Used it twice for about 5 minutes each time and all seems ok.  I'll let you know how I get on when it's given a longer run.

I ended up using a tamiya super stock RR motor with standard pinion and spur. found it to be fairly quick without any over heating problems.

I have raced against an rc10 b4 factory team spec with a 17 turn in and on tarmac acceleration is identical! dark impact handles and turns much better.

Of course on dirt the dark impact is far quicker.

I am quite impressed with it now, mate with b4 was not happy though

TIP

Tamiya don't give you much info for the use of these & don't supply many either, i think these were added later (after design).  These will wear down or, pop out after some use.  I packed the lot in, especially on the front.  I ran out & did'nt know where to get any more.  I solved this problem by using filter tips (same size) and you get an endless supply, (pack with grease). Inspect & renew on maintenance.

50357 - SP-357 (22T & 23T) AV PINION GEAR SET

50355 - SP-355 (18T & 19T) AV PINION GEAR SET

Should get these on ebay cheap, no problemo.

Dont know if this is the right place for this, but one of our national racers posted this on our club forum for those asking similar question

Folks,

these will be good for newcomers to the sport but also of some use to the more experience racers:
