hey, I'm a few hours away from getting bmwe's T-tech streetwise rally car to use instead of my TL-01 in a weekend parkinglot race and I want to know if the streetwise serise used a 12mm hex. so does it?

yeah, thanks! as far as opening up the holes, I don't mind, as it would only be like every 6-12 months that I would have to do that anyway. remembering to do that, now that's the hard part lol. anyway, how do you think that a trinity CO27-equiped streetwise would fare against say, a TC4 or a XXX-S or a Pro 4 or something with a good stock motor? ofcourse a new set of rims/tires and a new body (me be eyeing an HPI Lotus Elise 2000!) are in order, but other than that what do you think? would a Hitec HS-645MG be enough grunt to turn the wheels? (133 oz-in of torque and a travel time of .20 seconds, plus dual bearings and metal gears) oh yeah, and these do make good rally cars, right?

Terry, Is there anything you don't know? LOL! (I don't mean that in a bad way)

Jay

Jay, if it is electric RC probably not. The result of being actively

involved with electric RC racing on and off road for 26 years. It also

helps that I have probably the largest collection of RC magazines,

catalogues and non Tamiya manuals on Tamiyaclub. If you want info on

Tamiyas there are a lot of people more knowedgeable than I am though.

Regarding competitiveness remember the Streetwise range were cheaper

versions of thier competition cars, so their performance shouldn't be

expected to be as fast as the latest models. The top of the range DTM

was the same design but the plastic parts were all carbon filled and

the shocks were better. Saying that the basic chassis design is

identical and handling was as good as the DTM so performance won't be

far behind the top cars and it should certainly be competitive enough

for club racing. If you are racing it as TTech evolves their cars

instead of just bringing out totally new models (example TC3/TC4) it

shares most parts with the TTech buggies and quite a few of the spares

from the new X10 buggy will fit, unfortunately if the bevel gears are

damaged you can't replace them with X10 ones. The spares do appear

regularly on ebay.co.uk though. TTech are also rumoured to be bringing

out a new touring car this year, if they do bring one out all the

suspension components from it should bolt straight on to your

streetwise.

Bodyshellwise if you are racing stick to Protoform Mazda6 or any

Stratus, the Elise is known to be just about the worst handling shell

around, looks nice though. For a servo I would go for a Hitec HS-625

rather than the HS-645. The 625 has more than enough torque but is

quite a bit faster than the 645. You will want that extra speed. I ran

a plastic geared 625 in my touring car for so long I wore out the

brushes in the servo motor so I can certainly recommend them.

eh, about the body, this is only on a stock class motor and it will not be just for racing, but for tarmac bashing as well (for dirt driving I'll put the excort shell back on). I take it that a carson audi quattro S1 wouldn't be any better? would a HPI Escudo Pikes Peak be a better choice? what about a Vans Invent Lowla LT/10 group C shell? you would think that the downforce from the body would make the thing handle like a dream. if neither of those would be good, any suggestions other than the stratos's (stratii?) or mazda6s? I just don't want my blast from the past to become just another generic looking comp. TC. no matter how well you can paint, it is still a widely used mazda6 touring shell. maybe if I got it painted like the 1:1 mazda6 touring car, but my painting skills aren't up to that and I don't think that you can get a sticker set for them. but by stratos, would that also include a lancia stratos? also, this would be my first time racing and the metal geared versions of the 645 are actualy cheaper than the metal geared version of the 625. plus, I am not real likely to notice a .05 travel time difference and I would want the extra torque for other things like navigating pine needles (very common due to a row of pine trees by my driveway) and other activites (drifting on dirt or tarmac) that put alot of strain on a servo.

When I say Stratus I mean Dodge Stratus, the shape is very similar to

the Mazda6. The reason everyone uses them is that the handling is well

balanced and usually racing classes restrict the bodies to 4 door

touring cars. If you can get away with other bodies the HPI Escudo does

give you loads of downforce for extra grip, perfect for parking lot

racing. A Vans Invent Lowla would not fit as it is made for the

bigger  pro 10 chassis, not touring cars. If you can run a GT

shell then there are the Yokomo ones that fit on touring cars.

If it needs to be a touring car and you fancy something different there is Protoforms new Pontiac G6

Regarding servos if you have run a 625 you will notice the 645 is

slower on the track. The 625 still has loads more torque than standard

servos and whatever bashing you do the most load on the servo will be

on the racetrack. Racing slicks generate more grip so they put a

greater load through the steering. I used a plastic geared 625 for

years in my touring car racing it on carpet with foam tyres and have

never had a problem with it and never damaged the gears. If it can do

the job there it can handle any conditions outdoors.

since this is a tarmac race on relatively dark (aka relatively new and not very faded like most roads) asphalt, but with the normal nooks and crannies I figured I'd use something treaded that was optimised for parkinglot racing (aka HPI Vintage tires). but a rule set for each class will become availible in early june (the first of the two races at my HT is on june 18, second on august 13) so then I'll know about the rules on bodies. hopefully I'll be able to run a 200mm nitro sedan body on this chassis (aka opening my choices up to bodies like the Countach or that yokomo class C body or an escudo or something) and treaded tires. and with the body, if it had to be a TC I'd get a pre-painted '04 HPI impreza like what appears on their new sprint 2 chassis, or maybe a HPI Toureza body

ok, I went by the HT yesterday and the guy said that any body should do, so I guess I can either use that yokomo body or a Vixen Toyota GT-ONE body if they come back in stock in the next week or so. but the look of the repsol escort shell is starting to grow on me with its new shoes and stickers and stuff:
