Have been pondering for a while about modernising my Ford Ranger. It is a runner and it is completely standard even down to the radio gear and msc. A few questions...

1) I think dirt/water has got into the motor as it has started to whine. Have a RS-540 Black Sport Tuned Motor which I believe will fit without any mods. Is this correct? Going to ball race the Gearbox as I have it in bits.

2) Should I go the esc route? Have got a new Tamiya TEU 101BK from my shelf Lunchbox which isnt being used.I guess I need a new modern transmitter, receiver and steering servo. Is there a big advantage going this way or should I keep it original?

Thanks guys.

hi Dezmondo, if you are going to run it. ballraces are a must and an esc is very good idea. as far as i know there are at least 4 different types of gearboxes used in the srb series. the sport tuned might fit without any modification.

the sport tuned will fit as long as the orientation of the wires to the mount holes is the same as the stock motor. these have to line up or else the motor cover will not fit to secure the motor into the gear case.

definetly go with an esc, just maybe not the tamiya esc as it is on the low end of performance.

I would recomend the Novak XRS.  It can handle down to a 15 turn motor.  I use it in my rough rider runner

Hi, whatever ESC that you get, make sure that it has got VERY GOOD BRAKES. The SRB's are HEAVY cars!  I use a Futaba MC 330 CR for my F-150 XLT and I bought a Tamiya TEU-302BK as well to try. They both have good brakes, MUCH better than the Tamiya TEU-101BK. See my showroom for them ;-

i think you could give it try with what you got. since an srb isnt suitable for serious racing and way too expensive for bashing around. a sport tuned is a mild modified motor (23 turns - i think ) the basic tamiya should be able to handle it.

The teu 101 bk can handle 23 turn and above from what i know.

Thanks Birdy and everyone for their comments. I agree that I dont need it for serious racing. To be honest the standard set up was good running with 3700m/ah hump batteries. Its a shame the motor got noisey. I guess too much sand and water isn't good!

Just for now I may leave the old msc in and fit the Sport- Tuned motor to get back running. Don't want to chop the bullet connectors off the motor so can you buy the female connectors to crimp on the other wires? Just ordered some bearings off ebay to fit whilst its in bits.

cheers.

Yes, you can buy the bullet connectors, even from Tamiya, but you still need to cut them if you use original rear motor cover or drill its holes larger, to pass them through.

Yeah I see what you mean. Didn't think about that! Also as the Sport- Tuned has red and black wires I assume the red goes to the red wire on the old msc?

Have tried to fit the Sport- Tuned Motor in the gearbox but it seems a very tight fit. Took the box apart as I am fitting bearings and it still won't go on to the lugs. Have removed the label but still very tight.Any ideas?

Have tried a Johnson 540 motor that I have and that fits fine. Tempted to use that but dont know what it is like compared to the original Machubi motor in the SRBs

Given up trying to fit the Sport-tuned motor as it won't go in the right-hand side of the gearbox! I guess the castings vary so much as it has been done before. Has anybody had this problem?

So I guess its the Johnson motor for now or I use a Mabuchi RS 540 SH out of a re-re Lunchbox   Is there a difference?

yes, the castings vary. many other people had the same problem. some had to take off the motorsticker. others had to grind the gearbox with a dremel tool - takes a  only a little craftsmanship.

as far as i know the the johnson motor is slightly faster than the stock mabuchi silvercan. so you could go either way. just make sure the mabuchi isnt too worn and clean it before you pop it in. there is a how too clean it correctly topic on the forum - since you can not open it.

Thanks for the advice Birdy. Just waiting for the bearings to arrive and then can put it back together. Disappointed about the Sport-Tuned but it is slightly too big. Put it back in my Mighty Bull now!

I'm not using the srb for racing. I just rebuilt it for having some fun with it. not more. And I don't want to spend a lot of money for it. (spent enought for all the spare parts...). Will a TEU 101 bk be enough? I know, bigger is better, but will it be okay just to have some fun with the goold old sand scorcher?

The XRS is okay, but for the heavier RC cars, I would go with a GTS by Novak. Or something with a little more Amps as the XRS lacks AMP's quite a bit. Couldn't even push my Bruiser in reverse! My opinion. Hope it helps though!
