Great topic.  i have to agree - I am the same way.  I only have 4 built trucks at the moment (one is a shelf queen for life) but everytime I look at them I think "I need to replace that.......polish that.....try this....change that....."  My txt-1 has had the most parts changes and I still can't satisfy myself [:|].  I don't know if it will ever end !  Even my shelf juggernaut is not immune, I plan on replacing all the hardware with stainless steel hex stuff and adding the blue chassis/bumpers in the fall !  I need some serious evaluation from a psychologist !

This is the thing i'm looking at my cars thinking i need to replace this that and the other part and when i do i then think "well that part would look nice in alloy etc"

i end up running some cars that i think are runners and other people would class as shelf cars

Your not alone, I think quite a few club members are very particular.  There are even a select few that go so fars as to paint and sticker a car just like the box shows.

For me it depends. When I was working on my Fox, I bought all new parts, well atleast 95% new parts and ended up with a $300 Fox that still is not all brand New or finished. That is when I learned to just do what is needed. But there are some of the projects that I take more liking to and go out of the way. The only Original parts that came with my Sand Scorcher is the tranny and front towers and bars. The rest is either new, like new or restored to almost new condition. I sold off $300 worth of hop ups that I soaked back into it, and put about $200 more dollars of my own money into it. I know I could have easily bought a good condition one for that much, but I like knowing it was done right and that is what I get when I redo them myself. But that is me. [;)]

Yip, I think that there are loads of us like that.

I was given a Manta Ray chassis the other day, By 8pm that same night I had stripped it down, cleaned every part and was assembling it. So far in the last week I have ordered a new "A" and "B" tree as I wasn't too happy with the play in the bearing journals. Have also replaced the drive shafts and now looking at the wear in the gears. Where will it all end?

Also at the moment stripping the paint of a midnight pumpkin shell............. well the lad who owned it must have put the paint on with a builders trowel. So far three coats have come off and I have also found the original stickers. But hey, we love it and will carry on with it.

If it wasn't for this hobby, what would I spend my money on, the pub maybe?

So in answer to Petes question about being too fussey, I don't think we are. We just take a lot of pride in what we do.

I am also very fussy about condition, especially on paintjobs, so I end up stripping paint on most cars I get, have learned though from previous experience only to buy cars in very good condition as with anything else I end up speniding much more, replacing most parts.

I have to confess to being fussy when it comes to the handling and the way that my cars drive and appear on the move.

However although I look to decal my cars as perfectly as I can I don't minf scratches and scuffs. Infact I love my c class more now as it looks like its been around the norisring and actually raced.

Still gd to hear im not alone on my preparation of my cars.

well being relativly new to this and only having the two cars (tl01 and df02) i wouldnt say i am fussy about how it looks altyhough, yes of course there is some standard as to how i want my car to look and how i want people to react when they see my car but i am more worried about the performance, sometimes i think to myself am i a performance freak? i will try to get the best from nothing if i can.

so with both of my cars i have hopped em up because i want better performance than what i can get from a stock model. current upgrades on my cars are the usual like fully adjustable shocks tuned gears, universal drive shafts, aluminium shock towers, heat sinks, carbon parts, hotter motors and better esc's etc etc.

But once alll that is done i am still thinking how can i make it perform better? i am always searching for new or different parts. i dont think i have high standards i guess i just want the most from what i have got. the line has to be drawn somewhere because the old wallet can start smoking and where theres smoke theres fire!

so i gues its a case of different people different strokes. as long as your happy with it, should you really care what other people think??

Funny, I'm the exact same way.  I've actully pretty much quit buying used cars.  First, every used car that I have bought I have replaced nearly every part that shows wear, and at the very least stripped the car down when it arrives and rebuild it myself.  I bought a clod a year or two ago that the guy said was in excellent condition and when it got to me it was totally thrashed, it had a Clodzilla IV chassis with beat frame rails, bad cantilever bearings, totally junk.  I just figured that my definition of excellent condition was different than most other people's.  Actually glad to hear there are others like me out there, was beginning to think I was being a bit wierd.

I don't mind if a car is beat up from somthing that I have done to it though.

i dont think any of us are too fussy, if we were, all our cars would be hidden away in air tight containers at a specific temperature [;)]

i must admit, i'm pretty fussy with anything i own that means something to me, i cant stand scratches on things that i want to be perfect, not just my radio control stuff.

i try not to let anyone else touch my monster beetle shelf queen, its my only shelf queen and i want to keep it that way! actually, i guess i am a bit obsessed with it. when i got it it had some scuffs on the front bumper, so i bought a new one straight away. i noticed a tiny crack on one of the rear swing arms, where the screw goes in - so i bought a whole new parts tree (you couldnt even see the crack unless the motor was off! [:$]) and there was a tiny split where a screw mounted into a rear shock mount on the chassis - so i bought a set of crp mounts for it! the more i think about it, the more obsessed it sounds lol [:P]

before i knew about ebay and tamiyaclub, i repaired my old runners with whatever i could find (mostly superglue, duck tape and mecanno, that sort of rubbish repair!) but now days i absolutly hate super glue repairs and rubbish "make do" fixes. i like my runners to be free from worn out, broken parts. i bought a thundershot to use as a basher, and even that has received new parts [:P]

i think we all just love our little cars and trucks too much [:D]

I did the same in the beginning with the TA02W and MO2L chassis, which I basically end up with another chasis for each.  All the hop ups cost a ton of $ and did it really made the chasis handle that much better?  To me is like trying to make a base Honda Civic to run like the Lotus Elise. Just not worth the money spend, therefore if I want a performance RC I would buy another make other than Tamiya.  I now just add bearings and maybe Al. shocks and keep it stock.  Note...I am not into performance as much as the right scale look.  I guess at the end of the day is whatever turns you on.....
