Gear Boxes

Recommended Posts

Might want to check on the Bearings or plastic bushings. It seems that they might have a little play in them. It might be causing them to bind or slip.

A possible reason typical for the XC-chassis:

After a long time of heavy use, the threads in the upper gear box cover (part A3) often strip. The cover will appear to sit tight, but will flex enough to allow the gears to slip under load. If slightly longer screws (3x12) don't help, the holes can be filled with super glue and then opened again with a 2.6mm drill bit, but the only permanent solution is to replace the chassis.

This has happened twice on my rarely used CRV. If its coming from the rear axle, open it up. Inside the axle is a metal differential, held together with 3 or 4 screws. These screws may be loose, allowing the gears to slip. I've never had the front axle open, so I don't know if the same metal diff is in the front.
