The TT-01 is a good car to start with but from Argos is massively overpriced, a similar deal from Modelsport is £149 for example;

http://www.modelsport.co.uk/?CallFunction=...mp;ItemID=17243

The bodyshell is different but the chassis is the same. If the NSX isn't your thing, they also do the kit with other shells. There is also the option of the £174 deal which swaps a slow charger for one that will only take 30min or so to charge the battery. You also get a better battery for the car, spray paint and rechargable batteries for the handset as well.

It may also be worth visting your nearest model shop that stocks Tamiya, they should be able to give you all the information you need plus will almost certainly be cheaper than Argos.

Any good - well, I guess so :)

I'm only just getting back into RC myself after about 9 years off,

there's lots of new competitors on the market that weren't popular in

the UK 10 years ago but for electric RC I don't think you can beat

Tamiya - simply for parts availability.

Shop around before you buy that kit tho - look here, for example:

http://www.goldstarstockists.com/playtime/tamiya-onroad.htm

The same kit is available for £129, plus a dedicated model shop will be

able to help you with spares, upgrades and advice if you decide to

modify later on.

I'm sure some other more experienced peeps will be able to give you

more advice on exactly which model to go for based on exactly what you

want to do with it [:)]

The only difference and reason for the cheaper price, is that the R34 deals include one less servo. In the NSX you need two, one to operate the speed control the other for the steering. In the R34 you have an electronic speed control that does not need a servo, therefore it is removed from the deal. If you are looking at their deals, I would recommend the starter plus. Worth it for the quick charger alone, you'll be waiting 30 mins rather than 5 hours+ for the battery to charge up.

with the TT01 and the super plus kit thing (the dearer one) on a quick, 30 min charge, whats the average driving time, not racing or anything, just shooting round a car park getting the back end out etc..

Posted

Box stock, you'd be looking at around 15-20 minutes roughly depending on how you were driving it. This could be increased with ballbearings in the drivetrain but would be reduced with a faster motor. With the battery that come with the cheaper package you'd be looking at under 8 minutes.

More mah the longer your run time - teh batteries with kits are only bout 1800 so a 3000+ gives much more run time as does the nimh design.

Also try goldstar stockists they have some gd value kits and fast chargers as standard last time a looked.

Also build your car with ball bearing as they'll increase your run time and also make it more relable.

Actually, 20 minutes isn't bad and like I said, this can be increased. Bear in mind these are not toys that have tiny motors and go 5mph, these will do 20mph out of the box and don't take long to get to that speed. Put simply, they beat the pants of any toy type r/c car. The amount of time you charge a battery doesn't really matter, as long as the battery is fully charged it is fully charged. It doesn't matter if you fast charge it or slow charge it, maximum capacity is maximum capacity.

Also bear in mind that these batteries allow you to fast charge the car. With a toy type car such as a Nikko, it may run for 45 minutes but you wait 5 hours to charge. With the Tamiya you could be running all day if you had 2 or 3 batteries, just giving it 5 or 10 minutes between runs to let the car and battery cool down. The mah does indeed determine how long the car lasts, just bear in mind you can usually get a couple of basic 3000s or 3300s for the price of a 4200.

Score.

Ok, another question, i've heard that batteries can increase power, is this through volts or what?

On the plus pack, the battery is 3300 mAh but the charger only goes to 3000 mAh

http://www.modelsport.co.uk/?CallFunction=...mp;ItemID=13082

I pressume this is wrong, or why would they sell a charger and a battery that arn't compatible.

Thanks for the informative replies.

EDIT: Throught the running of the car, will the power gradualy decrease with battery life, or will it just die, so i get the full time with full power?

That charger should be fine with a 3300 although a 4200 would probably cut off early so it wouldn't be full charged. As for increasing power through batteries, this is true to a certain extent. The more expensive batteries will have lower internal resistance and may be 'matched'. Lower internal resistance increases 'punch' giving you more acceleration while matched cells won't loose power slowly throughout a run. Instead, matched cells will provide a high level of power for the entire run before going flat in a matter of seconds rather than minutes. These packs will cost at least Â£40 new however. Don't worry about getting expensive batteries at this stage however, you get much more obvious results by changing motor. Keep the kit standard and just buy an additional battery so you can be charging while you run and possibly a ballbearing kit to free up the drivetrain.

Cheers.

I will most definatly be going with a bearing kit.

i dabbled in XMODS and know what a difference metal bearings make.

i am a member, but not a subscriber for the £15.

So i get 5% discount? wicked.

But where do i get my member number thing?

EDIT: I also presume, if i put rally tyres on it and raise/soften the supension, i can take it off-road, like, hardpack dirt etc..

TT01 will go offroad with rally blocks and forced suspension but nt as well as a Tb01 does. u can get about 1cm off ground clearance. this is fine for gravel and hard dirt like Wrc or short grass in your garden. however i would get an inner body set up to protect the electronics and make life easier + it'll stop stones gettin into the steering [A]

should u want to have a more rally like machine I would look at the TB01. I have one in my showroom along with a TT01

yeh, i want on-road and off-road capability. nothing extreme, just enough for some dust :)

edit: For off-road stuff, i'd like to stick a rally body on it, mainly to keep the road going body dust and dirt free, with only road scars to show. So, can i just stick any 1:10th body on it? or does it HAVE to be tamiya etc..?

Posted

If it's a a smooth surface then you'll be fine with the TT-01. I found the TB-01 dust cover to only be good at protecting against large objects such as stones, the electronics would still get covered in dust.

i doesn't haft to be tamiya I use a hpi 190mm wide impreza shell on my Tb01. any 1/10th shell will fit tho u will begin to lose the scale looks with wider shells 200mm as they are wider than tamiya chassis. My advice is either a tamiya rally shell or a 190mm hpi one as they are only a bit wider which helps with wheel travel and also they are cheaper and so ideal for bashing.

Tb01 - yes dust can be a problem use foam under the edges, i find it workls best with wet ground and mud.

Cheers guys.

One more thing, i'd rather go for a trigger controller. I'm sure ModelsportUK would beok with swapping the pack one forone of my choice and changing the price accordingly, but i have no idea which one to go for, i dont want anything over like £70, i'd rather have something for around £30, but from looking on modelsport, they're **** expensive.

Any reccomendations?

That looks cool.

But before i look into them too much, should i be ok with the normal controller? or is it worth fetting a trigger one?
