Well I've finally decided to make a post about my biggest annoyance within this forum and forums in general, 'txt' speak or generally lazy typing. Mistakes are forgivable, everyone has and will make an error when posting plus many members do not speak English as their first language. This is fair enough, what annoys me are posts in 'txt' speak, a complete lack of punctuation and spelling that is blatantly wrong. I'm not saying everyone should go over their posts with a fine tooth comb, just that they put a little effort in to make it readable for everyone else.

Couldn't agree more, maybe it has even to do a bit with the carelessness, ease, lazyness and respectlessness of our times, badword even indirectly with the RTR RC models?

I think the 'quick fix' society may have something to do with it, why type everything and make things clear when you can save a few seconds and remove some vowels (they are an endangered species you know [;)] ). I think it could also be attributed to texting with mobile phones; kids shortening words to get more in a text therefore saving money. This filtering into forums, internet chat programs and the like I can understand, but not tolerate.

Wow, you're getting old early, Alan!

Soon you'll stop "getting" pop music, it'll all be too loud, and your idea of a good evening will be a good book, Radio 4 and maybe a spot of Question Time on the telly.

It's all downhill from here, matey... [:)]

For me, txt speak just comes across as disrespectful, lazy, rude and generally ignorant. If mr.poster is happy with (some) people forming that opinion of him from his words, then by all means go ahead u l337 haxxor dood. Otherwise, a nicely phrased "please" and an appreciative "thank you" go a long way...

Yes, I'm getting old too... [;)]

I completely agree. I do write like that when I am texting but that is the only time I use it. I haven't seen a lot of posts like this, but when I do, I just don't bother reading them.

Ye im wid u Alan, cnt do wiv this way of tlking, duz mi 'ed in!

I get texts all the time spelt like that, and sometimes emails aswell. mostly from the girlfriend :-(

To me it makes the person sound immature and like a chav. Not good. Doesnt take much longer to type words properly...........shame some people dont realise that.

Well, here I thought we would be talking about the TXT-1........................you got me !  Seriously, I couldn't agree more with the topic.  Some of us don't spend much time on computers - so ocasionally some "txt" talk leaves me baffled !  I am votingl for the return of proper sentences.

Al4n i th1nk yr ovr reactng m8. Haha, seriously though, i do agree with you.

I think one main reason people should type properly is beacuse this site is global, and as someone mentioned, English is not everyone's first language!

I agree. I feel that reading txt is difficult. English is
not my native language but I feel that I usually can make myself understood
when using English as well as understanding others that are using it. But txt
can be really hard to read.

For a non-native speaker your English is superb [H].  In fact it is better than many native speakers I know in the office!

I can't even bring myself to use text speak in text messages!  I just put less information in each message instead.

Well thank you but there is a difference between writing and
speaking. And I have to confess that I cheat a bit. Since I'm already sitting
in front of my computer I usually run my posts trough MS Word to correct the
worst spelling mistakes. This hopefully makes it easier for you read it and I
learn how to spell the words I'm not sure about.

Being non-native english speaker I could not agree more. But I must say this forum is one of the more positive examples regarding txt speech, which helps a lot! And if I'm really stuck (either reading or writing) I always have my dear old friend LEO by my side [:)]

You covered some of the possible reasons why, but you need to remember that not everyone is equal in what they were taught. I for one am not the best grammer type person, but that shouldn't mean I can't post on a forum. If someone's post bothers you because of grammer, don't read it. That would solve the problem.

Sorry, but it seems to me people worry about the small stuff when we should just be having fun sharing our love for RC..........bottom line!

I realise this and must add that I am not suggesting people don't post if their spelling and grammar is not 100% perfect, as I said in my first post, people make mistakes. Your reply to this thread was perfectly readable and easy to understand as I'm sure everyone would agree. My problem, as I also said in my first post, is with those who use 'txt' speak and/or show no attempt to punctuate their posts or check spelling. I don't know about you, but I would much rather read full sentences with full stops and commas than one giant block of text missing pretty much all the vowels that should be there!

I think that bad grammar or punctuation is perfectly acceptable if it's from someone who doesn't have English as their main language, or from people who aren't that good at English. But txt spk is lazy and I find it a bit annoying. As it was designed for fitting a message into the screen on a phone, that's where it should stay.

However, some abbreviations of words or common sentences are okay IMO.. Otherwise we can end up with verbose posts about everything. People here regularly use common acronyms to shorten the overall length of a post, and I don't think that's a problem. Even limited txt spk is okay, but when the entire post comprises vowel-less words it just becomes difficult to read.

I too am not a fan of this txt speak, I just find it is totaly lazy, when we were young our parents paid a small fortune for our education, the learning to both read and write. So why do away with all that hard work?

I would love to see posts from other parts of the world, in there home languages, all you need is a link to the babel fish converter. What a fantastic tool.

Lets use all the education that we received, and keep the language as we were taught at school, and leave the txt speak for the mobiles.

Have a good day people.

Oh, I see what you are saying now......I'm a little slow brother! [;)] Or maybe I am not Computer Geek enough to even try and write this TXT style! [:P] But yes, that does stink when you can't make out what people are saying!

Sorry for the misunderstanding! [:$]

Okay, I have to ask, please show me a sample of this TXT typing. I have no clue what it is. But then again, I don't use TXT message on a phone, heck, I use my phone maybe 40 minutes out of the month let alone this TXT stuff. "MAN I AM GETTING OLD!" [:$]

Dave, 'TXT' Speak is;

" alrite m8, cumin out l8r 2nite?  "

Basically making it shorter to fit on a phone screen.

Spk L8r Lads.

Cheers for that one Mike.

I have to admit, that I don't even use it on my mobile. Must be getting old. [:o]

Maybe I will have to learn some of the txt speak from my sisters kids. That way I will be able to read what is sent to me. [:)]

Have a good one mate.

Personally whilst i do dislike elements of txt talk i do feel that it is useful and perhaps because one is only 16 and part of the new age lol perfectly acceptable to a limited level. tho i dnt like to be linked as someone has mentioned in any capacity with chavs and anything of the ilk

I do use abreviations for example lol, lmao, gtg etc and number e.g. 4 instead of for. to save time on msn or when txtin. However i dnt use massive abreviations as i know people can't always understand them and often i dnt either. by droping the odd word here and there it just saves time espcially as these words come up a lot on msn where u talk to many people symoltaneiously therefore time is of the essence.  However i dnt use team speak and other number abreviations as i haven't a clue what they are and know that thed be useless to others. The use of -'s to link words and ideas I do use a lot as its very effective and clear to read a train of thought - the removal of link words aids in the understanding and conveying of key words espically to skim readers.

With regards to this being a matter of upbringing would my use of certain abreviations in txt language be seen as a diminishing of my interlectual prowess and therefore dare one say it an assocaition with "chavs"? I must therefore point out that i have just taken my GCSE's and am predicted 7 A*'s and 4 A's. I do admit i go to a state school where different classes and morales are present but just beacuse I use dnt rather than Do not or don't doesn't mean that i cannot use full english when required e.g. in debating where i have been in national finals beating many suposidly superior and highly classed private schools.

As for please, thankyou and other politness I think that u cannot replace it. a please and thankyou goes a long way. In conclusion whilst i do use txt language i make sure that others can read it - i try to be polite and make sure my posts are as logical and well written as possible hence a conclusion in proper English. Sorry if this sounds like a rant but i feel i must debate for my piers
