Being somewhat differently abled 2 stick and steering wheel controllers are no good for me these days.

Can anybody recommend a single stick unit? I've seen a 3ch Futaba (£70) and 2ch Hitec (£50) but little else.

I have a neighbor who had a singlestick radio for his grashopper 2 and it was challenging to drive.  It's hard enough for me to drive my tank with a one stick and thats at low speeds

I have little choice - I was quite good in '86!

Are there really single sticks? Never have seen one. If you can't find one you can always use a 4+ channel radio and just the left or right stick of it which has 2 channels, would that be ok?

Didn't Hitec buy out Multiplex (one off the older and top line radio gear companies)? But then a again Black and Decker bought out DeWalt a long way back, and havent made anything good since.

I would say that Hitec are no different than anyone else, they have

their good and their cheap. I have one myself, one of the cheap ones,

and think its just as good as my Futaba gear.

The one stick controllers tend to slide in the cheap bracket, as they

are made for cheap park-flyer packages (foam RTF RC planes with one

fixed speed, on). But as you say that you are limited to

choice, it could be a better option than buying a 4 channel. Most come

with mirco servos and receivers.

Out of curiosity, which hand will you be using? The one stick is

usually made for right hand controlling. Although I have seen some left

handed ones in packages for slope soarers. This allows them to launch

with their right hand while still being able to control it. A 4ch wont

work in the left hand as these are constructed to have the throttle (a

ratchet to hold stick in position when lifting off the stick, keeps

throttle up). Unless you buy a top of the line heli/plane 4 or more

channel TX which will allow you to convert it to the right.

My 'good' hand is my left and both Futaba and Hitec are right handed designs, but I don't think I'll care as I won't be holding it in the other hand anyway.

I think I'll risk the Hitec, as it's cheaper. If it proves to be no use I may need to go DIY on it.

ratchets can be swaped to the other side, even the cheep ones. so if you dont like the hitec try a cheep 4ch and put the ratchet were you want it.

stellamodels do a gd 4 channel futaba sky sports system on 40mhz - Its gd value and very nice - I have it in my merc 1850L to control the steering and gearbox simulatiously. up-down = 3 gears/ left-right = steering

you get used to it pretty quickly so it should be easy to use and set up.

You got to kiding me.  I have a hard enough time steering with my right and control the speed with my left from the wheel type control.  Now I know why I can't play the paino.

My first ever RC car came with a single stick controller. Very easy to use, in fact when I changed to 2-stick I thought it was a hassle having to have both hands on the controller!

My original one was a Sanwa/Cox. I was lucky enough to find a new one on ebay a while back, while looking for parts for my original cars' restoration.

Wow those are some really old school radios.  The gimbals remind me of the old Kraft systems

They're from the late 70s.  My original one came installed on an RC12E that somone had bought in (to New Zealand) from the US.

Well I've ordered a Hitec Focus single stick. Antics shop system is pants and refused every credit card I own, but PayPal saved the day! Here's hoping they have one in stock and it arrives soon.

Hope you find it okay. A bit late as you've already ordered, but there's a guy races at our local club who has lost an arm, and he uses a wheel radio. If you have a good one with a foam steering wheel, you can use your thumb to rotate the wheel. This guy is always in the A finals, a superb driver despite the fact that he can only use one hand to drive with.

I also occasionally drive one handed with my wheel radio whilst using the other hand to hold the camcorder, it takes a little practice but isn't too difficult to do. So if you don't get on with the single stick, you could give the wheel radio a try.

How does acceleration work?

I've been using one hand to drive and one to film of late too. You use your index finger to operate throttle and thumb to turn the wheel.

Alas, I can't do the thumb bit.

Ah right, sounds like the single stick is the only option then. Best of luck with it, hope you find it works for you. If not, there's bound to be some people here who could do a bit of DIY adaptation of a standard transmitter to suit your needs..

I'll keep you all posted [:D]
