Need advice guys. Am running my Ford Ranger completly stock at the moment i.e. original speed controller, vintage acoms mk 2 conroller, receiver etc.All has worked fine but the speed contoller is now just about to give. I have just ordered a TEU 101BK esc as I want to keep the Tamiya theme but what i need to know is do I need a new contoller and BEC receiver and retire the original unit or will a BEC receiver work with the mk2 acoms contoller?

cheers

Doesn't matter with your radio and the BEC.  That was for early esc's and msc's that didn't get enough power to power themselves. Any new esc will be good enough.  Just look it as you are losing weight by losing all that stuff plus better control with the radio/esc combo.

BEC will matter. BEC is for running a 6V receiver from a main battery that's more than 6V, instead of from 4x AA dry cells. The TEU-101BK ESC doesn't have BEC in it, so if your main battery is more than 6V (6 or more sub C cells) and you connect the power wire from this ESC to a non-BEC receiver, you'll stand a good chance of frying the receiver.

Easiest option is just to not connect the red power plug on the ESC to the receiver, only connect the signal wire to the throttle channel. Then continue to use the 4x AA pack.

To use the TEU-101BK to power the receiver and do away with the 4x AA pack, you're going to need a separate BEC unit. These are available as a Tamiya spare part, but are no longer made so you'd have to find old stock. Other options would be to either get an ESC that has BEC or a compatible receiver with BEC.

Most ESCs have BEC these days, the TEU-101BK is one of the few that does not.

Now might be the best time to upgrade your radio to a more recent one.  If you need to keep with tamiya then there are a lot of people selling the radios out of their XB cars and the reciever and servos will say Tamiya on them eventhough the radio is an inexpensive Futaba.

I have a similar setup in my hotshot (acoms Mk3 and teu-101 ESC).

I have installed the ESC with an old seperate BEC switch, but when you connect up the speed controller to the 2nd channel on the Rx, it inputs full battery voltage into the receiver anyway.

So the way I got round it was to remove the white ESC signal wire from the plug that goes into the receiver and put it into the spare slot on the end of the black BEC wire (so instead of just pos, neg and a blank, i now have all 3 connected). I then plugged that into channel 2, and the batt socket of the Rx is now empty.

Not sure if  that made sense, but just remember that the ESC will power the Rx via the controller wire, and the red BEC circuit wire. which i didn't like the idea of.

Maybe there is a better way to get around the problem? but mine with limited testing seems happy!

(love the old Acoms, makes the experience of driving the old cars all the more complete! ;)

Thanks guys. Have actually bought a battery eliminator switch off ebay this morning as I thought this could be a solution. Sounds a bit confusing as I will have 2 on/off switches now. Will probably become clearer with the wiring when I plug it all in.
