Hope this hasnt been asked already.

As I understand it, SSG is more flexable then the standard black carbon?

Is there an advantage to having the SSG, or is it a matter of preferance? referring to the TA04.

thanks

To be techy - the greater chassis flex can help car generate grip on a slippy surface. Stiffer chassis is best for higher grip conditions.

To be realistic - you'd be hard pressed to notice the difference between the two.

Strength and stiffness wise there is actually no difference between standard black carbon and SSG. Yokomo introduced SSG with their 1/12th scale at the last World Champs, and admitted it was mainly for looks. The Yokomo shaft drive tourer comes as standard made of SSG, with a black carbon special edition that handles exactly the same. They also sell a kit to 'upgrade' the car to a plastic chassis, which actually handles better.

SSG comes from the aerospace industry. The main difference is that the carbon sheet in SSG has a silver foil layer on each side. The foil is there to protect the carbon from UV light, which over time will break down the carbon fibre sheet and weaken it. In aircraft it needs more protection from UV radiation, but in RC cars it will take 20 years for any slight difference to be noticed.

Its really just the fashionable material at the moment, next year we could be back to plain black carbon, or even coloured or metal flake carbon as used by Trinity in the past.

I can still remember when Schumacher made a 1/12 chassis out of folded lexan sheet... [:D]

Only bad thing with SSG is that when it gets scratched, the scratches are black and very ugly. [:I]

Thanks guys,

Im gonna stick to black then, its cheaper, and I think looks better.

The silver is a little bit cheap looking, and as WillyChang says it looks bad when it scrarches.

My first electric RC car was an ID Electronics Spectron It's chassis was a flat sheet of thick lexan and they came complete with an forward/brake only ESC. Cost me £75 without radio in 1977! (I think)
