hi there!

i have just come back from the park after a good run (me and my king blackfoot (ballraced too!) vs the locals with there baja king and stadium blizer!) anyway i was useing a trinity monsters of touring 15 double in the king witch i got with a second hand ww2 and on tarmac i leave them behind by miles! (lol first time for everything!) but on the grass its a differant story they seem to have the upper hand. i know that the baja is 4wd but i have the bigger wheels to take me on the grass but the stadium blizer has smaller wheels (also it is not ballraced) but is faster than me! so what i am looking for is a motor that will still deliver the top end but still has the "grunt" to get the king flying on the grass so guys/gals wich motor would you recomend for the king blackfoot?

thanks in advance. lee!

Did you glue the rear tires, or put rubberbands on the edges of the wheels (or any other creative solution to stop the tires from slipping inside the wheel)? It's a common problem for the King Blackfoot, but luckily it's easily fixed. [8D]

You can't have "grunt" and "revs", you have to choose or compromise!

Of course by adding more money you can have more of both (in theory)!

In practise, for more grunt you need MORE turns and/or FEWER windings

ie. 19X1 17x2 27X1 15X1

Or far more cheaply, LOWER gearing (smaller pinion and/or larger spur) This multiplies the torque that actually gets to the drive wheels, lower gearing = more torque.

Try a few teeth smaller pinion, cost about £3 UK

Either of these options will cost you some flat out speed but you will gain acceleration and runtime!

El Mexican + Sjoerd nope i have glued them on firmly good thinking tho guys!

GPZ1000RX mate there is no way i can change gearing on the king bf as its kit spur/pinion or nothing unless i do a drilling mod!

also its the motor as when i ran a pack thu kbf on tarmac the motor just got warm but not untochable (and i must say it flew one guy recond it was hitting 55kph! lol doubt it tho!) while on the grass it would have melted the gearcase if i did not keep a eye on it you could also hear the pich of the motor go down a notch when it hit only a little incline and slow down to a point when i had to stop for frae of a burning out the motor so it looks like im gonna be looking for a motor with grunt any ideas whats good at the moment?

Sounds to me like the 15 might be too fast/powerful for the grass, resulting in the wheels spinning? Perhaps going down to a 19T super stock might be a good idea?

I have a 550 motor in ine, it's a old make from AYK. It doesn't have a lot of rev's though, but it does have good torque! [8D]

Maybe you can make a 7 cell back fit your car? That could do the trick a bit perhaps. You will need some modifications, I'll let you work out how to do it though. [;)]

Are you using the stock dampers? Those are a little too long (in the rear), they make the driveshaft have pretty big angles which result in a unsmooth running. Since I replace the dampers with slightly shorter CVA's, it's didn't only handle better due to better damping, but it also ran quite a bit smoother. It will also lower the truck slightly which also results in better handeling. [8D]

For a cheap fix, you could use some spacers inside the damper, or use shorter ballheads on the end of the shocks. [:)]

I don't you will get wheelspin in the grass - you will have a lot of grip in there - sometimes even that much 'grip' that the car gets stuck... [:P] lol

Electric motors like to spin fast, to get the best from them allow them to spin.

If your motor is getting very hot on the grass then it is bogging down! This means it is over geared for the grass, you must either lower the gearing or use a torquier motor.

Try a 19t stock motor, that should give you lots more torque.

It's horses for courses tho. Persist on the grass with your 15double and there's a good chance you'll cook something!

I found that grass gave the most traction with my KBF. What you need is a motor with plenty of torque. I found that a speed 600BB in a KBF was pretty impressive. Monster wheelies being order of the day especially on grass.

LOL, there is also a limit even on grass.....my daughter burnt out a Technigold at Clumber the other week by running her car thru grass that was about 2 feet tall, even the torquiest of motors would struggle with that!! [;)]

I always run my KBG with Tamiya's Pink 2wd offroad motor. It's the same one that comes with the dyna-storm rerelease.

It moves out on the street and off-road. The only problem.... is the wheely factor. I can run it nose up for about 30-40 feet.

snollen i like the sound of that motor! what turn is it? think that needs to be installed in my traxxas rustler [:D] how much are they and can you get hold of them more to the point?

Somebody told me that they were around 15turns. If you look on ebay you'll see them for sale. It's the pink-can Tamiya motor, it will say something like 2wd offroad motor. I really can't point you in the right direction - I got lucky and bought a bunch of these when a LSH closed.

Lots of people would like that too, minijosh.

The only info I've heard from Tamiya's oficial site ist that the pink motor that comes with the Dyna Storm re-release has 14 turns. RPM, torque, etc, no one knows.

It also seems to be different to the "2wd off road motor", from some years back. The only sure way is to open up both.

Can you tell the number of turns by hooking up a motor to a dyno? I'm not sure, seen the guys at the racetrack using these and they look a bit technical to me; if my motor's turning very fast then I'm happy enough [:P], but it's just a thought - you could take the car to your local friendly LHS and get them to run off a dyno report on it.
