Building my Hummer (lots of pics, beware dailers!)

Recommended Posts

Mr. DeeMiller,

You have captivated a lot TC members plus others with your Hummer project and I know I am jumping ahead, but would you consider doing something with one of your Cheetahs from your collection?  The result could be the ultimate fussion of RC and Static model hobbies.  (Not say your Hummer project is a bummer, that has a nice ring to it)

May I also suggest once you Hummer is completed, if you have not considered it already, you should enter it in various RC magazines and I am sure your would win based on your efforts and attention to details.

1. I have some runner bodies left so that would be a good idea although the challenge is not that big as the Cheetah is already very detailed.

Some weathering would do it no harm I guess...

Maybe in the future as I want to restore my SS and RR first.

2. Also a very good idea.

Thx for your faith!

Today I worked on the lights and tried something new as I wasn't pleased how the "parking lights" looked like:

PICT0170.jpg

Added some nylon mesh and glued it to the back of the light.

PICT0171.jpg

More scale look, lovely!

PICT0172.jpg

Filed out the back.

PICT0173.jpg

Fitted the red Plexiglas in.

PICT0174.jpg

Same procedure.

PICT0175.jpg

Front.

PICT0176.jpg

Filed out.

PICT0177.jpg

The headlights.

They are from the 935 static kit (actually 934 lights, on the same sprue, so I don't need them for the 935).

I glued them on Plexiglas so I can drill a hole for the LED and it also works as a mounting ring in the body.

I have to relocate the reinforcements but that would be no problem.

I'm very pleased this job is almost done as it is boaring and time consuming but now it looks like the way I want it to be.[+o(]

Tomorrow, when the glue is dried out I'll add them to the body.

Grtz Dee.

Yeah, I think the mods were a bit too picky but now all is solved and the moderation will be less strickt (win-win!).

Big thx mods!!![:D]

(btw, thx again for the rims!).

@Jules: I'm pleased you got some inspiration as it is ment for that![:D]

Here are a few pics of the lightning:

PICT0181.jpg

This was quite an effort...

I used two 3mm red LEDs for the rear lights which I had already but it went all to disaster...

When I soldered them they broke from the heat...

Ok, another try...this time they broke from the "press fitting" in the rear lights...[:@]

Had to drill them out...

Well, last set was destroyed by the heat to shrink the "shrink wrap"...

Now I had run out of 3mm LEDs so I tried orange ones...

Too bright...

In the end I decided to pick up two new 3mm red LEDs at my LES (local electronic store) and now it worked ok!

The old ones I had were about 20 years old and in time LED-technology has evolved as they can resist the solder heat way better...[:D]

Ok, nuf said here is the result:

PICT0182.jpg

The "parking lights".

I'm quite pleased how the mesh lights up...lovely!

These are 3mm yellow LEDs as they emphasize the orange in the Plexiglas.

PICT0183.jpg

Just the right brightness as I don't want it to look like the brakes are on if you know what I mean...

Hi Dee,

why don't you make opening side doors?

Max

Well Max, I have considered that option but I skip that idea because of:

-The extra work as I want to finish the project this year...

-The extra support for the body as it is a runner.

-It's really difficult to make the scale hinges of the doors, not the least the locks and there are 4 of them...

-Making a full interiour as it would look silly when seeing RC-components (still, a driver is on my mind).

-It has no real use, I would rather do that on a static model.

New pics:

PICT0186.jpg

Styrene sheets and putty fitted.

This is gonna be a lot of work to get it smooth again (prepare for long times with no updates!)

PICT0187.jpg

The "parking lights".

Also just the right brightness.

The pic shows a bit too much brightness, it's less over here...

Page 10 already...[<:o)]

Thx guys, I hope to give as much "knowledge" as I can so you can use it for your own projects.

More technics on the way (adding rivets, washing and dry-brushing etc.).

I'll start with casting the driver soon, never did this before so we have a win-win situation here: you have something to watch (and if it fails, some laughs [:$]), I have something to work out myself to get to the next level (and I'm enjoying every minute of it [8-|]).

Again, thx for the support as it motivates me even more.

New pics asap.

G'nite gents!

At 6800+ hits for this topic in this forum along, I wonder if it has passed the F-350 when TC members found out is coming.

I am sure if Mr. DeeMiller finishes his project the number of hits could be more than all the F-350 topics combined.

We all appreciate good efforts and job well done.

Many thx for the big compliment! (ok, it's a fact but still...[;)] ).

Sorry I have no updates today as "normal" work also has to be done.[:S]

PS Just "Dee" would do...[:$]

Oh come on, your work is outstanding too!

I love it man![H]

Ok, I found some spare time and decided to detail the roof rack some more because it was a bit...well...empty, boring (see page 3).

PICT0188.jpg

PICT0189.jpg

I soldered some bars to the rack and now it looks better.

Still, I haven't decided what finish I should use...

The mesh (insect screen) or the bars, maybe thicker...undecided yet.[^o)]

I hope the powerLEDs will soon arrive because I'm very curious how the roof (and head)lights will look like...[:@]

Then, the roof lights can be painted finally.

A small update:

PICT0190.jpg

Made new PIAA-decals instead of the GE-decals.

PIAA decided to sponsor me in the end after tough negotiations...[:S]

Rooflights polished to get a good reflection on the inside.

After the installation of the LEDs, it will be painted white and finish with semi-gloss black.

PICT0191.jpg

Roofrack primed.

I'll go for the mesh, that's why I soldered an extra bar in the middle.

Actually this is the 10th or so coat of paint...(stripping, primer, black, soldering, stripping, primer, black and again some soldering (middle bar now drilled into the front and rear bar, fixed by soldering), stripping, primer again, will finish with several coats of black.

Have a good weekend gents!

Grtz Dee.

Today's update:

PICT0192.jpg

Roofrack painted.

PICT0193.jpg

I made a more scale arial of 1mm stainless steel rod because it's flexible but doesn't bent when rolling over .

PICT0194.jpg

The stand is made of alu and bolted on the body with a small screw so I can attache the reciever to it on the inside.

The lower twisted part of the arial is winded in the same direction as the thread of the bolt (2,5mm).

That way you can easely screw the bolt in and lock it.

PICT0195.jpg

Painted.

PICT0196.jpg

Doors: second layer of putty.

Have a nice weekend gents!

Cheers

Max

That was a good tip!Thx![:D]

PICT0197.jpg

PICT0198.jpg

The color study.

I remade the rear for the original papermodel is a "pick-up".

Can't wait to finish it in those colors (yes, I can).

And no, there's no body-off pic...

Ok, found some time to work on the Hummer.

PICT0199.jpg

The door, sanded.

PICT0200.jpg

I use a piece of wood and wet 800 sandpaper.

PICT0201.jpg

This way it becomes flat while the outline of the door supports the sandpaper.

It's a bit of a precise job because you have to be carefull not to sand the hinges.

It has to dry again for a day to see if everything is flat.

I'm working on the (simple) dashboard and driver (XR-311/Cheetah) soon (thinking and preps have to be done...).

Grtz Dee.

PS 201 pics already![<:o)]
