Dee, them Toerag rims look absolutely awesome fella!

Love it so far!

Thx Mike!

Those heathens just don't know what the body will look like...[:P] (anyone wants to guess?).

Anyway, here are the last ones for today:

PICT0029.jpg

The bodysupport on the rear, Velcro.

The underside of the sparewheelcase fits between the two stands.

PICT0030.jpg

The front support is raised 5mm to get a free movement of the wheels when fully compressed as the Goodriches are a bit wider than the stock Hummer tires.

Good night fellas!

Thx for all the nice comments.[:D]

An addiction is good, if you get enough sleep that is...

Looks superb Dee. Bravo!

Errr, just a quick question are you gonna run this?[:|]

Thx for the compliment!

Now that's a good question...

I'm gonna do like following:

-Run it like a maniac, abused it in the worst possible way.

-Through it in the closet.

-Take it out 25 years from then.

-Restore it and put it in my showroom once again.

.....

No kiddin', it is a runner because it's not quite vintage (yet).

That's why I made the camelbar stronger for outside use (I also reinforce the front and rear end of the body).

The roof is getting bars too as this baby will turn over, I have no doubt!

Also sidebars are going to be added as well as a rearbumper (the 1/1 has one too).

The (black)bumper gets a skid plate to avoid too many scratches.

I also improved the steering.

I noticed that the toe-in value varies A LOT through the suspensiontravel, from app. -5 to +5 the least!!!

I changed the connections and now it works way better: it differs less than 1 deg. now... [:)]

PICT0068.jpg

Before (according to manual).

PICT0069.jpg

After.

PICT0070.jpg

A nice thing to notice is that the box-art shows the connections on top which is actually impossible on the other side.

Now I know what they mean by "Model may vary from artist's rendition on box"...lol!

I agree the toe-rag wheels look wrong, wrong, and well wrong.

It would look very odd to have different spares too anyway. Stick with the stock.

Maybe you like the Ford Focus RS WRC wheels better?

Or maybe the MB 190E EvoII AMG ones? Or the Impreza WRC 2004?[;)]

Is it just the model or the word "Touareg"?

These wheels are race alloys from OZ-racing so I figured I put them on as it is gonna be a rallycar (but what rally...?).

I also noticed the chassis of the Hummer is the same as the Ford F150 (and the Chevy S-10, maybe more) but the front and rear chassis parts are red (yak!).

I think I'll take a break as it is beautiful weather over here, off to the city!

It's gonna be white. Right?

Looks like you're doing a Paris Dakar style rally raid vehicle to me...

Exactly!

It's gonna be white. Right?

Exactly!

I may add a few other colors (stripes red/blue as the main sponsor is Valvoline) but the main color will be white.

I have to find out what number the last car is in the new Paris-Dakar rally 2007 and I'll make it that number plus 1...I guess this Hummer will be in the Truck class...lol!

Ok, nuf said:

The making of the roof bars:

PICT0043.jpg

The bars.

At second thought I changed the 3mm iron bars to 2mm woodscrews.

Therefore I stick hard wood into the two upper tubes and pre-drill small holes (1mm) to "guide" the screws.

PICT0044.jpg

The bars screwed together and soldered (did I just say "screwed"?).

PICT0045.jpg

Nice strong connection which also looks nice and scaly.

The head of the bolts will be filled with filler and will be marker lights (front: orange, rear: red).

PICT0046.jpg

Mounted on the roof.

Tomorrow I want to make the rearbumper and the sidebars (under the doors) but I haven't figured out yet how I'll connect them to the body.

We'll see...

I think it's looking great so far Dee, you do great work. I'll have to see the how the wheels go with the body before I make up my mind!

And one thing...

...Felcro...

...is spelt Velcro! [:D]

PICT0047.jpg

So you thought is was smooth huh?

Well, this took a while, but I'm nearly there...(I think 2 layers of primer will do now).

The making of the rear bumper:

PICT0048.jpg

The gold coloured parts are from an upgrade kit for 1/16 tanks.

Well, it's a kinda tank so why not using them?

PICT0049.jpg

Mounted.

I took me about 4 hours...still not satisfied with the hinges, maybe I'll make new mounts.

But not today...[W]

The making of the sidebars:

PICT0050.jpg

Parts, about 2 hours work.

I used 5mm brass tube (IRL 60mm as it's 1/12 scale) and copper for the steps (20mm).

PICT0051.jpg

Soldering the steps to the bars.

I love solderfluid as it gives a nice and smooth "weld".

PICT0052.jpg

Sidebars mounted.

I use black ABS-plastic (the body is too) as it's somewhat flexible, strong and dissolves very good in the glue.

A firm connection.

PICT0053.jpg

Inside view.

Selftapper goes into the tubes and will be locked with CA.

Estimated building time (incl. chassis) till now: about 45 hours...ooops!...[8-|]

After puting all this killer work into this body, I would be afraid to run it.

Jim

Yes Jim, I would think the same but there's a catch here:

Normally I would go crazy with plastic plate and styrene bars but I bear in mind that it is a runner so I use a lot of metal parts.

The camelbar, for instance, is very strong as I use brass intead of alu, same for the side- and roofbars.

The rearbumper is made of duraluminium as it is much stiffer than normal aluminium.

Even the decals are going to be on "roll over areas" to protect the paint...

However, you can't prevent any damage but at least it will be minimal.

Ok, more updates:

PICT0054.jpg

The roof is getting there.

I think I need just one more layer of primer (now I spray the entire roof)

PICT0055.jpg

Change of plans as I'm not satisfied by the look of the sparewheels sticking out that far.

Today's Dakar's racers have all the spareparts inside the vehicle to reduce air resistance.

And, when I don't use the sparewheels, the weight will also be reduced as it is getting heavier and heavier with all the extra parts...[:D]

Maybe I want to sell the sparewheels in the grey scheme with the wash effect...

PICT0056.jpg

The new design (paper).

Even more room for sponsordecals and striping too!

So the new name for this vehicle will be: "The Camel"......suits it well, don't you think?[;)]

Thx Ax (and the others!).

As the forum is back on-line again:

The making of the extra tow hook:

PICT0058.jpg

The ball link is a bit out of scale, gonna fitt a smaller one.

PICT0059.jpg

Cut out the shape.

PICT0060.jpg

Bended and assembled.

PICT0057.jpg

The start of the new sparewheel cage.

PICT0061.jpg

Upgrade for the esc: cooling ribs.

I attached it with double sided heat conducting adhesive tape (computer stuff).

PICT0062.jpg

Here you can see the ground clearance.

Stock is 30mm, now it's 35mm.

C'mon, 2 days without an update. You're killing me with the suspense!

Have you been sacrificing build time to go to work or something[8o|]

Posted

LOL![:D]

Well, I've had one of those days...[:@]

It just wouldn't work out the way I wanted it to be on the support for the extra hinges on the back.

I have thrown away 4 hours of drawing, cutting, drilling and sanding but I'm on the right track again now...

I haven't taken pictures yet but progress is still there, I'll show them when it's done.

I'm still looking for scale bolts/rivets.

I also thought about the painting and made a quick drawing in Word:

I haven't recieved all the decals yet so changes may have to be made.

PICT0065.jpg

The back is now covered.

More to come.

Thx for your support, appriciate it!

Ok, next batch:

The (re)making of the supports for the tow hinges:

PICT0063.jpg

This time I used a decorative T-profile (instead of the ones in page 3).

PICT0064.jpg

Cut out and drilled.

PICT0099.jpg

I used brass nails to immitate round headed bolts.

These are 1,2mm nails which are hammered in a 1,1mm hole so they are "press fitted".

I also used CA-glue to secure the fitting.

They won't come loose, I can tell yah that!

PICT0100.jpg

A new benchmark: ONE HUNDRED pics already![;)]

Cut off the nails and gave them a "slap on the back" to tighten them to the max.

Not perfect allignment but I got a bit tired so I'll leave it this way (you gotta stop somewhere...).

Note the new (now correct scale) extra tow hook, made of a ball connector with a small M2 bolt.

Next jobs:

-Striping the camelbar as I am not satisfied with the painting, I used automotive primer and PS-paint.

The paint is too soft and I'll use automotive black next time.

-Wheel arches to connect the mudflaps to.

-Further reinforcements to the body.

At this stage I keep in mind that the used parts are "softer" than the actual body so they break first (and not the body, as it is really rigid...).

This way, I'm always able to repair the damage if you know what I mean...

I hope to have some new pics up tomorrow.

Good night folks!
