Building my Hummer (lots of pics, beware dailers!)

Recommended Posts

Thats looking top quality mate. I wish I had to skill to build something like that, let alone the patience!

Although it would no doubt be destroyed after the first time I used it [:P]

DeeMiller:

You are doing some GREAT work there [Y] !

I have some "project ideas" for my High Lift - mind if I throw them your way when you finish your Scale Hummer - I need a good scratch builder !

No problem, mail me and we'll work some things out.

Today, I got myself some more LEDs:

PICT0154.jpg

Besides the normal lights I want to add some small marker lights.

These LEDs are 2V and I decided to make a 2.4V circuit for the whole car.

I'll put 2 NiMh (2x1.2=2.4V) parallel so I have a 4400mAh (2x2200) supply without any resistors (total 4 NiMh rechargeables).

So, theoratically, I have 4400mAh:(14x20mA)=15 hours of lightning.

PICT0155.jpg

Installed (the gaps will be filled with the CA-glue).

This is gonna be a really presize job as the holes are 2.5x3.5mm each.

Three more to go....[+o(]

All in one, maybe with an extra switch, don't know at this point.

Rear bumper painted.

I'll give it a wash and dry-brush when intalled on the car when it's painted.

At that stage, the decals will also be added.

Dee,

I can only applaud and admire your work. Some of the best, most detailed craftmenship I've seen during my whole 3 years on TC. Your attention to detail is outstanding!

Don't rush it, slow and steady wins the race!

Allie.

Just stumbled across this, fanstastic job here mr Deemiller.

This has to be the holy grail on scale detailling, keep up the good work.

Will keep looking at this thread when I need inspiration on any scale work I try and do in the future.

Dee,

That teenie-tiny pic doesn't do your rear bumper justice. How about a bigger pic mate?

The polyester putty doesn't hold...

PICT0159.jpg

Nice casting, don't you think?[:@]

I think I'll try to cover the doors with vinyl stickers.

It's a real hard job to putty them anyway.

Aw 'ell...

Stickers collected from the Ford Focus WRC and Ford F150 Stadium truck.

That's it for today.

Why not use what I do, JB Weld.   It dries into a nice perfect hard plastic that sands VERY well.

I've used it on filler on various items from replica firearms to models to repairing tables in the kitchen.

It dries super strong and has never flaked off.

I just used a ton of it to fix my Bruiser body that was in sad shape.  With sanding it came out smoother than the "Tamiya Putty". Next time I'm using it instead of the putty!

Cheers

Tim

You can use thin ABS plastic sheets. You can cut them with hobby knives or scissors and glue them over the doors, it's fast and clean. I buy them in my local hobby shop, they are white with different thicknesses. They are often used in scale train dioramas. The thinnest one maybe is 0.5 millimeters. The brand I used is called "Evergreen" and is USA made if I remember well.

Cheers

Thx for the advice, I'll go for the styrene sheets.

Now I'm concentrating on the lights as this is the most hard job...

I went to the car graveyard and got me some coloured Plexiglas.

Here we go:

PICT0161.jpg

Red and orange pieces.

PICT0162.jpg

Filed into the right shape.

PICT0163.jpg

Sanded and polished.

PICT0164.jpg

Rear: fitted in the gap which I drilled and filed out before.

PICT0165.jpg

Front.

You may wonder why I don't use the small LEDs...

Well, i want to try something different: optical wire.

That way, I only need one or two (power)LEDs and I can adjust the brightness by switching between different LEDs.

416343e7b2872145fe95a33893ce9329.jpg

I ordered an optical Toslink cable for the X-box gamecomputer, still waiting for it.

When I got it, I can determine what hole has to be drilled in the back of the marker lights.

I think it is 1mm, we'll see...

PICT0166.jpg

Original parking light.

PICT0167.jpg

Drilled and filed out.

PICT0168.jpg

Fitting the orange Plexiglas in.

PICT0169.jpg

Done.

A 5mm normal LED will be fitted in the cone behind the glas.

The hole is already there (also ~5mm).

mint man,

You can see light in anything (you can make what you want from what you have to hand)

well done again

I have thought of using optical cable because led's sometimes stick out about 3mm, I will See how your turn out.

this project has made me want to do one, I think I will do a L.A.V though

Mr. DeeMiller,

You have captivated a lot TC members plus others with your Hummer project and I know I am jumping ahead, but would you consider doing something with one of your Cheetahs from your collection?  The result could be the ultimate fussion of RC and Static model hobbies.  (Not say your Hummer project is a bummer, that has a nice ring to it)

May I also suggest once you Hummer is completed, if you have not considered it already, you should enter it in various RC magazines and I am sure your would win based on your efforts and attention to details.
