Building my Hummer (lots of pics, beware dailers!)

Recommended Posts

Does this post make item entry number 200?

Nope, this is.[;)]

Thx for the compliment!

Don't expect too much of upcoming friday because I couldn't work on the molds as much as I wanted.

I hope to get the first castings ready (don't quote me on that).

The latex molds have to dry till thursday:

These are 4 thin layers of latex and I hope they come off well...

Ha Ha, DEE, all I could think about with that pic is the Wizard of Oz.... "I'M MELLLLLLTIIIIIIIIING" LOL

Any input on SLOWING DOWN my Hummer would be appreciated. I know enough people are reading to be able to share that info. I want the stock motor to SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOW down to keep damage to a minimum WITH the MEchanical speed control. My friend who will recieve this gift, IS a beginner driver.

Hey Crash, something you may want to try.... get a 380 motor from an old Grasshopper, with the mount plate to put it in a 540 mount. Will be much better than running a 540 on lower speeds of the mechanical speed control, as you may end up with a burnt out speedie...

Just a thought...

Ok, back on topic:

The molds are ready and the casting has begun.

Here are the results:

PICT0241.jpg

Molds "greased" with silicone spray to prevent the polyester sticking to the latex mold.

PICT0242.jpg

Filled with polyester.

PICT0243.jpg

Arm filled.

This mold must be filled twice because otherwise the polyester wouldn't go everywhere.

PICT0244.jpg

Second filling.

PICT0245.jpg

Nice results.

Be sure to get all the airbubbles out.

I use an old vacuum cleaner (see page 11).

So, as you can see, you can just copy anything with polyester!

Have a nice weekend!

By the way DeeMillar, I've been watching this thread since day one, and I have to say.... WOW! it's absolutely fantastic, I'm working on a Hummer as well, though I won't be doing a wip thread, I shall just post here when completed. If you don't mind, I'd like to "borrow" some of your idea's???????

Well sg_two, the ideas are there to be used, so go ahead!

I wouldn't recommend putting rims in hot water...a round wheel runs better than a dried one.[;)]

Grtz Dee.

I forgot one word "room" lol, Iput my freshly painted parts etc... in my boiler room, nice and hot also very dry in there.

Was seriously thinking of selling my Brusier, would have bean cool to swap a couple of RTR cars for a couple of new teeths[:D] You don't happen to be ha real Dentist Dee? I could come to Netherland and gett some propper pain killing done also

It cant be long now before your scratch built master piece is finish? Christmas?

Cheers and thanks for the inspiration!

My pleasure!

Ok, I have to tell you: I've also been working on another (secret) project and it's almost finished.

Meanwhile, I found a better way to make the molds (I ruined the mold for the left arm, it was ripped when I tried to remove it from the original piece [:@] ).

PICT0246.jpg

-Apply the latex with a small stick (saves you one-way brushes).

This way, the latex comes on more thick (by tapped rubbing, if you know what I mean...[:$]).

It needs two or three layers now to get a nice strong and flexible mold.

-Dry with a hairdryer (hé, if your wife/girl friend calls your RC collection a piece of bull faeces, you have all the right).

This way, the latex dries instantly and doesn't drip that quickly.

-When the mold is finished, use talcum powder on the outside to prevent the mold to stick together when removed from the piece.

When using polyester, the inside won't stick to the casting piece.

Made some new castings:

PICT0247.jpg

Here you can see why you have to use a vacuum chamber.

The top one had airbubbles enclosed in the mold.

The other one is the latest and is ok.

PICT0248.jpg

Another view of the torso.

I love this stuff as it is rather simple and gives some great results!

Remember, I never used this stuff before, only read about it.

The only way to learn is to try (any usually fail) so that you will not make the same mistakes again.

at least that is what people tell me, I would prefer to just do it right though. (that certainly ain't gonna happen)

those new molds are coming of very well I think I might try one.

Or read about what other people have tried and not make the same mistake again...[;)]

Seems a rather wise remark regarding your age, lol![:P]

Dee, its been said a number of times over this thread (having just read it end to end!) but this project is awesome. Thanks for the inspiration and the dedicated blow by blow descriptions. I, among others, appreciate and applaud your work.

And thank YOU  for that nice reply.[:D]

@Eek, yes, it looks like the polyester takes the enamel paint very well.[:D]

Now I'm testing what glue would be the best to use, (polyester or maybe another glue, just curious)

Ok, here are some more pics:

PICT0249.jpg

PICT0250.jpg

Not much but it shows the way I'm heading.

The microphones are made of 1mm iron wire and a drop of .....yes, you guessed correct, wood glue.

The caps on the helmets are made of styrene sheet, has to be corrected some more as you can see.

Hope to find some time next week as this week has been ridiculously busy! Maybe you have noticed...(I'm seeing things that are not there...lol![;)])

A small update.

At the left body (navigator) I turned the hand so it doesn't look like a copy of the right one.

I also sanded his fingers so he's pointing to the GPS decive.

Next week I'll start painting them.

Grtz to my # 1 fan Joel![}]

Ok dude, skip the "simple" then...[;)]

Sometimes it gets out of hand, lol!

It was supposed to be a "simple" Hummer in the beginning but due to the massive response I was "pushed" to take it one step higher.

I'm glad you guys did as I enjoy the building too although progress is slow at the moment.

well at this point I could add that slow and steady wins the race but that is just sad. So I won't

keep up the good work.
