I'm new to all this and have just had what i think (hope) is a bargain (when it arrives).

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...N%3AIT&rd=1

This comes with a GM Racing 2 x 10 motor.

Firstly, is this motor any cop for an offroad car.

Secondly what do the numbers mean. I am technically minded and realise the 10 means 10turns, so the lower impedance will give more power than say a 17turn. But what does the 2 mean. And how does that relate to its suitability for a specific purpose.

Welcome to the club - looks like a nice buggy you've picked up there - some trick parts added too.

The 2 means that the motor has 10 'double' turns - ie two strands of wire...

It's a pretty hairy motor - it'll drain you battery pretty fast, but you'll get some pretty good speed out of it. If you're not used to running RC cars, you might want to get yourself a slightly 'tamer' motor to practice on for a bit, otherwise you might find you need to be buying some new parts fairly soon [;)]

Generally then, as a rule of thumb, does a 2 x 10turn motor have more less power or RPM than a 10 turn single?

when you start adding winds to the second number  (10x1  10x2 10x3  10x4 etc etc ) you are adding to the smoothness the of the response of the motor ,fast response is good in some types of car's (4wd cars on a high bite surface ) but not good for say a 2wd car on a dusty surface ,thats when you would start adding winds to your motor ,to cut down on that instant power , better control on less bite surface

Thanks Gruntfuggly and john for the info. Cant wait for it to arrive now!

So it's gonna be a little quicker than my last car then -- Hornet with standard 540 motor 17 years ago!

I've also bought some vapextech 3700mAh batteries, but i presume my run time wont be brilliant with this motor. I've seen the Tamiya Sport Tuned motors going fairly cheap on ebay, would one these give a noticibly extended play time? And would it be much slower?

A sport tuned will definitely give you a noticeably longer run time - the danger is that once you've experienced the speed of the quicker motor, you'll probably find that the sport tuned will just feel really slow. If you are thinking of getting one, I'd recommend not running with the 10x2 until you've run a few times at least with the sport tuned. At least the, when you do the upgrade, you'll notice the difference in speed and you'll have a better idea about how much difference there is to the run time.

You should also find it handles a badword of a lot better than your old Hornet...

Thats what i like about the hornet -- it had the "life's like a box of chocolates" feel about it!!!!

I got skate park and bmx jumps area within walking distance-- playtime is looming[:)]

I have just been out with my TT01 street lancer and my father was out with his TB01 quattro in tarmax spec and we have enormous fun racing tight and twisty monte carlo style tracks with our cars. The tracks are often no more than 2 meters wide up and down kirbs but due to the tight nature of the track masses of power isnt needed. We use a stock 540 at the mo and max will be a sport tuned. This works perfectly in the size and style of our closely raced course and has several major advantages over when i raced with 19 turns.

the run time of 45 mins per pack is superb

You can race really close as you can see the cars right up close making passing some much more fun and close fought.

Due to the lower speeds less money need be spent on tyres and they last a long time.

Lower speeds means as said before less parts and wear thanks to the lower impact forces your shells last much longer and look nicer for the shelf as well as on the road.

And with lights as well the rally can go on and on. I just thourght i would say that as you talk about getting such a powerful motor and a sport tuned to start with, Dont be suprise if you prefer the less power of the sport tuned but the ability to push the car harder. Power is nothing with out control.

Have ordered a tamiya sport tuned now. Will keep the 2x10 turn motor for special occasions. Slower motor will make it easier for my son to use too. Thanks for all the advice.

Your welcome, I love the sport tuned in my TB01 rally its superb, powerful, great mid range torque and also robust, In the wet it can be steaming but it will still keep performing which is great [:D] and there cheap as well lol

cheers Ryck
