You can't make that generalisation.

Battery packs range from £10 to £60 in price.

NiMH's have a different chemical contruction to NiCd's - NiMH's are more sensitive to overcharging, and have a shorter lifespan before losing performance, but NiMH's also offer higher capacities than NiCd's.

What generalsisation?

Here in south Africa, you can get a 1700 ni-cd for R290 and 3300 ni-mh for R500, Thats a very big difference here in south Africa!

So therefore which one is better?[:D]

The point is, there are more than just 2 kinds of cell available. You can spend as much as you like, or as little as you like.

NiMH cells are often higher capacity, NiCd's are generally more durable. Neither is "better" necessarily (if you're not racing), they are just different.

This seems to contradict what you said in the first place?

I think you guys took me wrong here. When i said whats the difference? it was a question. I know that there is a difference, thats why the price is different, but i was asking, what the difference is, and i got answered, Ni-Mh are less durable basically... correct? Is there a difference in charging times tho? and if you treat it right, dont charge it when its hot, so on so on, would it last a long time?

Ni-Mh will generally take longer longer to charge than Ni-Cad due to their increased capacity,as long as they are both charged at the same rate that is.

Also you can't charge NiMH as fast as NiCDs which you can charge with a current till almost 4 times the capacity (4C)!, but NiMHs don't have a memory effect like NiCD and offer higher capacities, thus are probably the future (also newer technology) till the next one like LiPo batteries will be improved for our high currents.

fasterthebetter - where in SA u from? Im in Durbz.

Let me try put things into a lekker perspective here :)

I love 2400mah Nicad packs because they will last years if you look after them. NiMH packs dont last that long :P and need a special charger (so they dont overheat). When you "Peak" a battery the charger looks for a drop in voltage as the "Peak" and stops charging. This drop is smaller with NiMH than Nicads, so need smaller threshold.

NiMH batteries are also lighter than Nicads in terms of mah/weight ratio.

I only recommend NiMH packs if you gonna race serious modifieds, otherwise 2400mah Sanyo Nicads are ACE. If you have to get NiMH get GP3300, NEVER buy no-name name brand packs!

NiMH are cheaper in the sense that you get more capacity for a similar price, but it all depends if they are matched, High Voltage, and of course the brand.

OH and...

charge time is generally relative to the size of the packs, and how many amps you crank into them. Even if you look after NiMH packs, they dont seem to last as long as nicads, not sure why.

No, they don't fry that fast at a slow charging, btw you should store NiMHs half full, hope yours will recover after some charging cycles.
