Hi,

I'm about to paint my 58211 M03 Mini in the following order:

1) Body in Tamiya PS Racing Green,

2) Grill in PS silver

3) Parking lights in PS ??

4) Roof in PS white

5) Wheel flares with PS black

6) Windows with PS smoke

7) Apply Union Jack flag decal to roof (with some Windex).

Is the order ok? Does the roof need to be in white if the decal will hide it? I.e. can I spray the roof green also (easier/cleaner)? Or does the white bring out the colour of the flag decal better? The decal seems to run to the roof gutter/perimeter where the green would meet the white.

I understand the wheel flares should be painted black first, but without PS paint available in the jar in Australia (grrrr distributor), I'd have to mask the whole body for the black overspray, and to avoid that I'd spray the black last.

I've read other threads, and feel they didn't answer my questions.

NB/ The other day I sprayed black against white and then white against black on two pieces of scrap Lexan and found no difference in the look of the edge of the two, whether "darker colour first" or vice versa. I found it more important to get 100% coverage with both paint colours (I should say shades in this case) as the little white dots can shows through black and vice versa. My 2 cents worth.

Thanks!!

I'd back the white roof in black, otherwise it'll look transluscent in sunlight.

Its easier to mask the body and spray the grille first (PS41 Bright Silver works well; its a bit lighter than PS12 Silver), than mask the grille and spray it later, because its hard to mask the grille slats without causing bleeding underneath. At least if you put tape on the body around the grille its a relatively flat surface for the sticky to adhere to.

Everyone has their own technique; its what works best for you! [:)]

I hate masking small areas so I brushed my grill and arches first. I then masked off the roof and sprayed the body and then did the roof.

I managed to smuggle some jars of PC paints into Australia form Japan and used my PC-12 silver that was left over from my Fox build 20 years ago (it is still good!).

Thanks all for the tips. Having to use only spray packs, I painted in the order of silver (grill), racing green (my wife's pick), white for the roof (would have done the roof in green in retrospect when applying the UJ decal), black for wheel flares, and smoke. I wrecked a M01 body with smoke, so this time I warmed the room to be very dry and did not touch the glass areas during spraying. The UJ decal was applied with much Windex. Highly recommended - a rather tense exercise! I painted the wheels white (shelf queen only), and used a pen to paint the tyre lettering. Car was fitted with many hopups, after doing so I wondered why I bothered - as it was only tested one down my carpeted hall.[*-)]

Thanks man. Nice showroom. Your copper coloured M03 provided inspiration. I don't like the racing green all that much, wanted to go for some bright full bodied colour (my wife picked it), as I believe PS-4 blue is dead dull. Mine isn't perfect, but I get better with each new model. Just completing my Fox resto - very satisfying. A true ground up resto. See recent Fox antenna thread in Vintage forum for pic...
