My 1/12 Caterham Super Seven BDR build begins here :)

Recommended Posts

awesome job so far of what seems to be a box stock assembly. I'd suggest tin metal clamps for the radiator hoses and several 90 degrees bends for the spark plug leads on the rocker cover to push the scale realism a bit further.

I was tempted to own the caterham kit some years ago, but settled for the 1/12 mini and skyline instead, with the later proved to be more of a headache as the doors and bonnet play hard to allign.

Cheers CT though I am sure u could pull off a stunning caterham as your

painting skills on the p34 looked tops.

The next step was to assemble the air filters. They are simply stunning the

pics do not convey how good they look Tamiya came up trumps here they are metal

with k&n logos with metal filters made from a super fine crinkled gorse

 5013.jpg

Here they are assembled sorry it’s out of focus

5014.jpg

And installed in the chassis

5015.jpg

These components make the bonnet hooks witch were attached to both sides of

the car

5016.jpg

Next I made up the spare wheel (I also made the others now for later)

5017.jpg

The finished wheel attaches to the rear with this long screw only one in the

kit so be careful not to lose it. Then the center cap was screwed on

5018.jpg

And here it is mounted to the car

5019.jpg

Next I assembled the front lights and the wing mounts

5020.jpg

And mounted its starting to get its character now :)

5022.jpg

A steady hand was needed as the glue fogs this plastic very easily and these

are the first things the eye will be drawn to on the finished car. The silver

pieces are for the indicator lenses to be fixed over I painted it to give it a

backing.

5021.jpg

And here with the lenses on

5023.jpg

So here is the finished chassis from the rear

5024.jpg

And from the front all that is left to do is the body panels lights wheels

and polishing [Y]

Couldn’t agree more it would be a bargain at twice the price.

I have been busy in my shed spraying these up. They where sanded with 1500

grit paper in warm soapy water then given 6 thin coats of Tamiya racing green.

It seems to be very hard to take a photo of the gloss as the flash seems to

penetrate it if that makes sense so I took the first one with the flash off.

Please note these are not polished or waxed yet that will be done when the

paint has sealed and they are on the car.

5026.jpg

The components of the nose cowl. The grill is made from tiny diameter metal

tubing and is welded together it looks very impressive in the flesh. The badge

is a small badge made of some sort of rubber it is not merely a decal but an

actual miniature badge it looks very nice on.

5027.jpg

These are metal foil and have to be cut out and affixed to the rear wings.

5028.jpg

And here are the panels attached This was quite some work as many many

screws are used to hold them on

5030.jpg

From the rear

5031.jpg

And finally my favorite pic as the car really has some character now

Thanks Joel I know that most on this club are more into RC (me included) but

its such a nice kit I wanted to share it with everyone.

Next stage was to fit the bonnet to the car it attaches using the hooks on springs

and small molded clips it can be removed and probably will be when I have the

car on display. The bonnet just needed al little shaping by hand to ensure a

perfect panel gap. I love how they have modeled the louvers.

51.jpg

And from the front

511.jpg

And side

512.jpg

Next I attached the wheels these are held on by scale bolts using the wrench

provided it’s nice that I can remove them to show people the disc brakes as the

model has become quite a conversation piece when people come round.

513.jpg

The indicators where attached to the wings care was needed to here to ensure

no glue runs crept onto the paintwork

514.jpg

Next I painted the rear lights the brake and indicator fixings where backed

with silver before being assembled. The smaller reverse and fog lights where

detailed with silver and black

515.jpg

These where then attached to the car completing the final step

516.jpg

And here is the finished car all that is left is to polish the metal and

polish and wax the body work

517.jpg

518.jpg

519.jpg

5110.jpg

5111.jpg

5112.jpg

5113.jpg

5114.jpg

The car will now be sent to the valet :D for a spruce up before it resides

in this home I got for it today

DSC02223.jpg

Finally I really like this pic :D

Bravo Clarkey my boy, you have done us all proud. It looks sensational.

Do a chronicle on the Top Force, I think we have a hop up build guide, but not a standard one.

Hows our sig coming? What are we called? The Professors? The Teachers? The pustulant builders of Putrification and Death?

Thanks guys u really are all to kind,

and I didn’t even think anyone would be interested as it wasn’t rc guess there

is a place for static’s here too :).

Put the finishing touches to it today. Polished the metal with Tamiya fine

polishing compound then waxed it with modeling wax. Finally I waxed the body

work to just seal in the paint and give it a nice shine.

caterham159.jpg

I have to say I am really impressed with there wax

caterham160.jpg

caterham161.jpg

And finally sitting proud in its case not sure about how to position it in

the case but I like this for the minute.

Too bad as in "a pity" as many people would love to read the article, including me.

Relax, it's just a personal opinion like I replied on your PM.[;)]
