What cars do you all drive?

Recommended Posts

Yep. The did them that way for years. Works quite well, actually. Very little torque-steer, and with McPherson struts and rack-and-pinion steering, it's not as floaty and wandery as the old RWD solid-axle ones. The rear 4 spark plugs are "interesting" to reach, but apart from that it's pretty easy to work on.

I always assumed something that size with a V6 or V8 was longitudinal and RWD like the Yank cars of old.

As they say, everyday's a school day!

Guys I need some opinions . Looking for a new to me motor . I need either an estate or a large 4x4 as we have a rather massive Doberman . Has to be a diesel . Budget of £2500 ish

I've narrowed the choice down to either a 2005 BMW 320d touring or a 2003 TD5 Land Rover discovery . Both have about the same mileage and service history and will give roughly the same mpg .

What would you buy ?????????????

Actually Nobbi land rover parts are quite cheap and in Peterborough we have a lot of non dealer land rover specialists - ie Nene Overland . Most jobs I can do myself such as routine servicing . On the other hand although BMW parts are costly they need less attention . Really unsure as to what to go for .

If you can do work yourself then LR are not bad to own but I know lots of owners that seem to spend a lot of time with diffs and hub parts. GSF do a good range of bits for BM's and they do seem bullet proof if serviced.

I guess the main question is do you ever want to go off road or are you likely to get cut off in bad weather.

An ex-colleague of mine went through quite a few LRs, a Freelander, 2x Discovery's and even a Defender.

None of them are what you would call 'reliable'. In fact, we used to joke that if Steve had bought a Land Rover then it was guaranteed not to snow!

In reality though, Peterborough is really very flat. I've seen it. Unless you're going to be doing lots of excursions cross-country and up mountainsides then there is really very little reason to own a LR in such an environment. Heavier vehicle tax, more expensive servicing / tyres, more preventative maintenance coupled with a propensity to bork itself randomly.

2005 320 I can't figure whether that would be the last of the e46s or an early e90? The 46s were very well put together and will easily achieve far greater MPG than any Land Rover. Avoid the 318d at all costs though, no obvious savings over the 320. If you can afford it, stretch to the 330d - fantastic cars in every respect, if a little bit boring on the inside.

Depends on the usage / budget, but those are two very different cars for different purposes Bromvw!

Does the Doberman fit in the back of the Beemer? They are not as spacious as they look[emoji6]

I think You'll be ok with either, you can get a lot of car at that money, especially with an E46

The 320d touring will be better on fuel, parts, servicing etc, it depends if you like the look of the touring (bit "old man") or whether you need 4WD and/or prefer the higher ride height and look (a bit farmerish) of the disco, dog should fit comfortably in both. :D

2005 will be an E46, and what you say is pretty spot on about it.

I have a 320td, but would prefer a 330d as they are a lot quicker, saying that it will be going after the summer for an E46 M3, my wife said If I get her an X5 I can have what I want, I have, so I will

I just remember a weekend away with friends where the bags witch were lost in the back of my e34 saloon completely filled the back of their e91 touring.

BromVW, I use to work for the company that handled breakdowns for both BMW and Landrover. As much as I'd like to say "Go British" the Beemer is likely to be a lot more reliable mate. LR's of that era always seemed to be throwing up engine management faults that required diagnotic equipment and a PHd in mathematics to solve 😬

Being giving this a lot of thought chaps . after a test drive in both i've ruled out the Discovery and the Bemmer . I don't really need a 4x4 that big . Hopeless MPG . I do fancy doing some green lane driving though. BMW boot is way too small for my needs .

SO - here's my compromise . Freelander TD4 . Fairly capable off road , decent mpg , large enough boot for the dog and the same engine as a BMW 320d !!!!!!. Piece of urine to service DIY without having to buy too many extra tools .

Get it re mapped and do some basic tuning and I will have the best of both worlds . 148 BHP is easy to do as that's the standard figure for the same stock BMW engine without ruining the mpg figures .

Sometimes it pays to think outside the box .

And not to mention the Freelander looks much much better than both the other two!

yup the facelift 2003 model still looks quite modern too . On the lookout for a decent low mileage one .

I had an old Freelander, ran it for about 6 months, It was the 1.8 petrol, and I'd heard some horror stories about that engine, but who believes what they read on the net eh? Pre-facelift petrols were a lot cheaper to buy and I wasn't gonna keep it long so took the plunge!

The Td4 is supposed to be a lot more "reliable", plus the 03 facelifts do look nicer as you say, and obviously better on fuel, mine was shockingly thirsty, worse than my Evo and that's saying something!

Anyway she never put a foot wrong over the winter through the snow and ice and I sold it in the spring for pretty much what I paid for it, give or take a few quid.

40 MPG on a run Wez from a TD4 - not half bad for a 4x4 . Quick too once tuned . Ultra reliable BMW engine with timing chain so no problems with belts failing .

Thanks bromvw but its a Hyundai Santa Fe not a Honda ;) They were voted SUV of the year here 3 years in a row but to be honest the only off roading it see's is the odd trip up to the ski fields :) Prices in the UK are quite different to New Zealand prices though. I would love an RS Focus but they are crazy money here!!
