What cars do you all drive?

Recommended Posts

Picked up my new car last week. Was getting fed up of the terrible fuel economy of my diesel Astra J (26MPG around town due to lots of cold starts and short journeys)plus its was just far too heavy for around town (1711KG unladen)

So I went for this, a 2014 Corsa VXR Nurburgring Edition. Totally different car to drive than a standard Corsa VXR. Comes with Bilstein B12 Dampers and Bilstein Progressive springs, Brembo brakes, Drexler Limited Slip Front Diff, Lightweight Forged Alloys, AFL Gyroscopic Headlights, Bluetooth, DAB Radio and Auto Lights. Even with the power its still miles better on fuel around town than my old diesel Astra was, with 30.8MPG and only 1223KG in weight.

So here is "Rex" ......

Very nice!

I'm insanely jealous of the little hot-hatch options available in Europe that we just don't see over here. I'm actually surprised that Ford saw fit to grace us with the Fiesta ST (and even more astonished to see the manual-only EcoBoost). Maybe someday GM will notice that Mini Coopers and Fiat 500s and Focus ZX3s are actually very popular, and bring over the Corsa instead of the horrible little Daewoos with Chevy badges (and automatics!) that we've suffered along with since the demise of the Suzuki Swift-based Geo Metro...

There is one already isn't there?

Not that a quick search turns up

Well it was 13 degrees today in Aberdeen/Scotland !! In freakin Decemeber !! lol ..... so went for a wee drive along some lovely twisty roads, car was fantastic. Its not got huge power, 210BHP, 195lb/ft and 1223KG, so its got the torque to pull it out of corners nicely. Love the LSD Diff, for being FWD it just goes round a corner and when you accelerate mid corner instead of understeering it just gets tighter and tighter. :) ...... well that was its wee blast, poor REX will now be subject to dandering around town for the next few weeks/month.

This is my Impreza WRX wagon. It's fast and big enough for the whole family (including the dog). I should have bought one years ago.

Love the WRX wagons.

My temporary company car is awful. It's not this exact one, but it is like it -

avestsidestat.jpg

Come March I'll have something new and permanent.

I'm struggling to see the point of this car. It has a weezy 1.6D engine with 110hp (feels like half that) and because it's quite a big car (1500kg) it doesn't do well on the whole emissions thing (upon which any company vehicle tax will be based) - 110g/km is pretty poor for a 1.6!

To cap it off, it's not even got a cheap list price - £23,395!

And do you think I can get anywhere near the 67mpg quoted figure? No, best I've managed (trying really hard, driving at 65mph) was 54mpg. I did better in my old 2.0 Mondeo! Typically it does 45mpg. Terrible. Oh, and the fuel tank is small at 60 litres for a car this size, managing a circa 500 mile range.

It's just a vile, vile thing.

Toyota? I don't think we get that one over here... but ours are just as dull and pointless. If not for the 86, they could change their slogan to "Cars For People Who Don't Really Like Cars."

It goes quite well, holds its own against lighter cars and cuts it with the bigger boys too, but I'm getting old and want a muscle /street car to cruise in. Always had my heart set on a 67-8 c10 chev swb but will see, they are hard/expensive to get over here.

Edit: one of these, in any repairable state

A C10 would be sweet but as you said would be pretty hard to find one here. I've seen a couple at shows in the South Island but would imagine that the owners would never let them go 😀 If the dollar wasn't so bad you could have looked at importing one

Yeah most of that model that are over here are the 69-70 or 71-72 grille with 'bump' bonnet or LWB :( Importing one is expensive as the 67'68 swb is the most sort after.

This is my new toy, the last Aussie built Ford V8 Falcon. 335kw (450 hp) 5.0l V8 Miami Supercharged engine, 6 spd manual, 19 inch staggered fitment wheels, Brembo brakes, GT R Spec suspension, Sync 2, DAB, Bi-Modal exhaust. Goes and sounds amazing with an awesome supercharger whine, haven't tried the launch control yet (only done 1900kms so far). This engine has a system called transient over boost, where it will actually produce up to 375kw (500+ hp) when conditions are right in every gear except 1st.

Spends its days in the shed under a car cover, comes out when the weather is fine for a cruise and spirited drive from time to time

Shame it's a Ford M8  ... We get the mustang now ! . Bit of a shame & Holden changes as well . What an era

of a great battle & NO ONE HAS WON !!! We have lost out . Sad really .. Should have put it on blocks , as it

will be worth abit in a few years , i'm sure .

True mate, end of an era here in Australia, quite sad too. Good to see both blue and red teams going out with a bang though.

Oh, and don't worry, it ain't going to get many Kms on it, it's due now for its first service, so will get new oil and filter included in that, then kms will be kept to a minimum. I also got a full 2nd set of the factory alloys as I'd imagine in years to come they will be hard/impossible to get, and if these get any kind of damage, I'll always have a brand new set to replace them.

It really is an amazing car for the money, in the previous model (FG) the FPV GT R Spec was $20k dearer than this one, I'm pretty happy with it.

I wish i could get a GTS HSV , as i would do the same . But i have to buy a shed ( $50,000+ ) to

put the rest of my stuff in . Let alone a nice GTS :( . O-well was a great run we had & The V8's

battle just won't be the same . Very sad :( .

That 850R looks mint and very cool suspension setup you have there.

As for Impreza wagons, every family should have one! They should be standard issue. I've had three over the years and the wife has had two!

Loving the muscle cars too, we are just getting rhd Mustangs now in the UK finally, and they come with a 2.3 eco boost engine or the proper 5.0 V8 :)

I agree with the current breed of Toyota, I'm so disappointed with them. I want Supra, Celica, MR2, not the lame washing machines they mostly sell.

My Supra pre kids, loved it, I think it was my favourite car ever!

Did anyone see the new LC500 launched at Detroit by Lexus? Since this is on its way, maybe a Supra is one step closer, I like Mr Toyoda, he's a proper petrol head. This is production ready 467bhp

You guys don't know how good you have it, at least carwise. Here in Denmark a Toyota like that is available for 53.000 $ and that is the edition with as less extra equipment as possible. We have 180% taxes on cars in Denmark, so everything is crazy expensive. On top of that we also have heavy taxes on gasoline/diesel as well!

Klausen,

Are you able to import secondhand cars from abroad or is that also heavily loaded? Also what happens to second hand cars there, do they hold their value well? Is it the same story for Motorbikes with heavy taxes?

I guess the wealthier or those who for whatever reason can, have cars registered abroad on foreign plates??

Many people buy second hand cars in for example Germany, where taxes are much less. But to have them registered in Denmark, you still have to pay the taxes, but then you are often able to get a lot more equipment for about the same price. You cannot do it with new cars. They do not hold the value that good, guess it is the same as in other countries. But ofcourse the second hand cars sell for higher prices here than in our neighbor countries.

Motorbikes is the same story.

You are not allowed to drive a car on foreign plates, if you live in Denmark, or at least only for a few weeks, till you have had the time to register the car in Denmark.

Anyway this is a part of our taxsystem, that then gives us other benifits, such as free healthcare and hospitals for everybody at all time. All education is free for everybody, and on educations similar to highschool and college, you even get paid up to 700$ a month, so you have something to live for, without a parttime job when studying. In this way you can focus on your education. All this is ofcourse very nice, but it won't get me a nice car :)

Thanks for that info Klausen, interesting.

I seem to remember in the early days of Japanese grey imports that a lot of cars came into Denmark and then exported to UK as it was more tax effective. Also new cars were subsidised in those markets due to tax regime so exporting meant you could take advantage of lower basic price. I can't remember exactly it was a long time ago, may have been another country even but I'm sure no such loopholes exist anymore!

No you are right there. Denmark is or at least used to be the cheapest place to buy the car from the manufatorer, so a lot of cars are imported to Denmark, and then passed on to other European countries. Kind of ironic right :)

Wow, awesome for a factory option, don't think we were offered that here!

Good to know I'm not going completely crazy, tough break for you guys though.
