hi all,

my first post here and im probably going to ask the same question that every new user asks, so sorry in advance [:D]

anyway.. im looking to buy an electric car, and a cheap one to be honest. i have driven quite a few as a kid and now im older (infact just old!) i want a nice fast boys toy to zoom around with, whilst my kids are using there own 'baby' versions. i like the idea of tuning in the long run so would be intersted in updating and upgrading,,, that lead me to the Tamiya TL-01 chassis.

i have looked around for a while now but what i cant seem to get my head around is if i should be looking at the TL-01 or infact the TT-01.

it seems that a new TT-01 can be had for basically £100, yet on ebay the TL-01's seem to be going for the same if not more than that, even those that are years old.

is there more to this than i see?

any advice or opinions would be appreciated.

buy a tt01r chassis with a spare body.

it's lightly tuned, it has bull bearings etc.

it can be tuned (but not too much), it's cheap, fun and easy to clean/mantein.

Don't forget that curse of the modern eBay age, everything old is "Ultra Rare, Very desirable, Muchos Cash please".

The advice in this case is still to get a TT01 based car (assuming that you aren't going off-road). And ignore the price difference.

the tt01 is lighter and  better handling car than the tl01.

but if u are new back the game, try the tl01 first as it will survive the flat out kerb crashes better.

the tt01 is a weak chassis where the wish bones meet the main chassis.

also the plastic used on the tt01 chassis is of a poor quality, and after a few strips and rebuilds the screws to strip in the holes.

Also the hop ups for the tl01 are cheaper to buy. for instance ball dif for tt are 12 quid 7 quid for the tl........but the ballrace kits are cheaper.....

swings and round abouts

good luck

TT01 all the way - Its a super strong chassis and believe me with my street rally track its stood up well for 3 years of abuse and only 3 breakages on the car from running 3/4 times per week.

The TT01 hotups are also cheaper in general. Whilst the diffs are more expensive you really dont need a ball diff for bashing, just put some thick grease in your diff and there u go - 1x ball diff for free. The majority of other items are cheaper - Prop shafts, aluminium parts and spares are much cheaper around £2.50 per part tree on ebay from some sellers.

On the performance its far more rounded - Lower centre of gravity and a tub chassis that rides smoothly over all the bumps and crests. Its much more planted and simple than the overweight TL01 which has to be fair a rather naff chassis in my own opinion.

So I would recormend an early TT01 kit, why the age because an early kit will be around £50 whilst a later one around £75/80 thats a bodyshell xtra there so my top tip would be to buy an old kit in the deal e.g. 2003 impreza wrc and then use the money you save to buy another shell maybe the one u wanted anyway the 04 xsara but u get two shells rather than one. [:D]

My advice is this.  Set a budget, don't get into a hurry to buy and then look around for a good used chassis.   The TL-01 and TT-10 are tamiya's lowest end car.  By the time you buy the car and put a few hop ups in it, you could have bought a better car in the first place.  I have bought three XRay T1 chassis around the $80-$120 mark which is auguably one of the nicest cars out there.

The price difference is due to the importers pricing policies. The TL01 is an old design and hasn't been made for a few years now. When the TL01 was available they cost around £180 for a complete car. When the TT01 was first released it was priced about the same. A change of distributor and a more agressive pricing policy over time has brought the price of the TT01 chassis down to £99 for the complete car. The later cars are priced around £130, but they come with a ready painted body. The reason TL01s are still more expensive on ebay is that people who paid £180-200 for the car expect to get at least £100 back when they sell it, although they usually don't sell, except to those who don't do any research into kit prices. A second hand TL01 can be bought for around £50 complete.

Given the choice between the two cars the TT01 is better in all areas. Performs better out of the box, spares are cheap and readily available and it's certainly as tough as the TL01. If you are interested in upgrading then there are far more useful options for the TT01, of course being a current model all the tune up parts are available.

Although if you are planning to upgrade the car later it's usually cheaper to buy a higher spec model than to try and upgrade a cheaper car.

Indeed terry.sc there is a matter of the pre-painted shells tho still with the price difference one can purchase the shell separately and get two shells for the price [:D]

Yes people often try to price there cars way to high - I see many I brough this for X and want 70% of X back apart from the fact that X is now 1/2X in parts and has been superseded by Y and Z

On the subject of buying a higher spec car, yes this may work out better should u have aspirations to go racing but for bashing around there becomes the issue of spares/maintenance and also the chassis design.

An Xray is an open car that will not like stones of heavy chassis impacts. Further the open chassis sides aren't well protected on the road/street areas. Unlike the TT01 thats very secure and solid.

So My advice is still a TT01 with light hotups and if you want to race after that, get a TA05/TB02 once you have learned and enjoyed the TT01 which I still use after having both a TA05 and a TB02 at my disposal.

I have had bother of these chassis's and I have to say it depends on:

  • where you are going to drive? (on road, off road  maby both)
  • If you want to make the car faster (can be pricey but I am looking in the long run)

If you chose the TL-01 then you can make this into an off roader. (all you need really are some new wheels and tires

If you want to make the faster and want to run on-road then I would chose the TT-01.

Sorry I can't be of any more help,

True point about the Tl01 off road - I see you have a stadium raider tho I would ask you to look at the gear ratios.

Also maybe you should review your post as both seem to say the Tl01 which is contradiction to your final statement [^o)]  A/S critical thinking there

lol

ok so the TT it is.

one final question however, the subaru seems to be retailing at £45 ish yet the skyline at double that, i noted that one reply above mentioned you  get a pre-finshed shell with the newer, and more expensive versions. are there many other differenecs between the kits?

Posted

Some of the first kits had an msc. Avoid these and go for an esc as its a much easier and more effective form of speed control.

Other than that no issue. My advce here would be to go for the subaru and then buy a skyline shell and wheels if u want a skyline or whatever.

Or sell the scobby shell, there are many ways to do this.

I love the TL-01 and its versatile as both a rally car and on- road. Spares and stuff still readily available on ebay etc9 i have spent a small fortune on mine!), but i would agree that if your only going on car parks etc and not off road, the TT-01 kit/ deals around are probably the cheapest way into the tamiya thing, but the upgrade bug can be an expensive thing!
