I have just managed to double my collection of cars, by getting hold of 1 Kyosho Ultima Pro, and 1.5 Schumacher Procats.  They came with various spares inc motors 10 - 27 turns, radio gear, and a couple of Silverstar speedos.  Problem was, I was warned they were in "kit" form, but hadn't guessed they would come as a single kit.  So after spending 3 evenings sorting out the bits I have a rough idea what i need to finish them.

The Procat has most parts, however I am short of most of the turnbuckles and ball joints.  I have looked around and can't find much in the way of spares for the Procat.  Can anyone enlighten me to the best place to source turnbuckles and matching ball joints that I will be able to use. It is imperative that I do not spend much on parts, therefore want to avoid titanium etc parts.  Original Steel parts will do.

To brighten up the post, here is a picture of one of the chassis (although the other one is is a much nicer red one![H])

Oh, and I am also going to have to find something to protect th belt under the chassis as I have no original under body.  Any ideas would be welcomed.

Thanks

Kyoshos and Schumachers - my territory[:D]

First for a Procat manual try here

http://www.retromodelisme.com/manuels_page...schumacher.html

For spares keep watching ebay, they pop up regularly there, but for common parts like ball joints once you find the part numbers you want a search can throw up several shops that still have them in stock.

For ball joints and turnbuckles any ones will do though, you don't need to stick to Schumacher ones. For the turnbuckle lengths see the manual.

Procat bodies and undertrays are still available from Schumacher direct http://www.racing-cars.com/search.asp?subc...ortname2=partno

Although if you want the narrow belt guard from the touring car version I have one spare, email me if interested.

WOOHOOO.

It's been running![:)]  I managed to get all necessary bits, and have had it running today with the old cracked/split tyres on (they are now totally finished!)

So, I am now thinking of stripping it down, cleaning it and building it again.  Just wanted some help in the following questions:

1.  I guess that all plastic parts can be cleaned with soapy water or white spirit?

2.  For the bearings, am I correct in saying that putting 3 in 1 oil in them is good?

3.  Should I just grease the pinion and spur?  Is there anything else I need to grease/oil?

4. What is the best way to put new tyres on the wheels?  Is soaking in hot water advised/necessary?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Good to hear it's running, that's what they were designed for!

1. Soapy water and a small brush(an old toothbrush is perfect!) is the best way to clean the plastics.

2. Yes, the bearings do need lubricating occcasionally. A drop of 3 in 1 is good, a proper bearing oil is better (but a lot more expensive!)

3. Grease shouldn't go anywhere near a CAT at all! The spur gear is usually self lubricating, unless it is made of tufnol (looks hard and brown and is best lubed with oil which soaks into the surface) Greasing the spur will just end up with the grease being redistributed all over the chassis. The only other place in need of grease is inside the ball diffs and you must use a proper grease designed for ball diffs for this, any ordinary grease will just make the diffs slip and will need the diffs to be stripped down and all traces removed..

4. Shouldn't be any need to soak in hot water at all. The picture above looks like the wheels are later 2.2 inch ones. If your wheels are 2 inch diameter you will need to look on Schumacher's website for their 'originals' range. If the wheels are 2.2 inch diameter then any modern tyre will do. You will find they are much softer than old style tyres so you will need to fit the foam inserts that come with the tyres and the tyres will need supergluing to the wheels to keep them on.

Excellent, cheers Terry.

Will have to check the size of my wheels.  I think some may be older 2 inch and others 2.2.

Are all schumacher buggy wheels the same fit?  There are some currently on ebay with tyres that I was thinking of buying.

Thanks

Just checked the wheels and they are all 2.2.  I have a set of spikes fitted on a set that don't have inserts.  I also have another set of Schumacher road tyres, but they appear to not fit on the wheels.  They have some markings on them including 2.1, but I cannot find any reference to these on the internet.  Can anyone help please?

Thanks

The road tyres will be Schumacher Road and Tracks, listed as RT1s. Originally designed for their first touring car range with 2" wheels.  Here's my example from my showroom.

getuserimage.asp?t=&id=img297_114200461054_3.jpg

It's fitted with the original Procat wheels, which are 2" (actually oversize at 2.1") and the tyres were made for these wheels. The tyres are still available in 2.2" size for modern cars and Schumacher still use them on their Menace GTR.

As for wheels early Schumachers (CAT, Procat, Bosscat, Cougar, Topcat) all used the same wheel fitment, but starting at the CAT2000 and Cougar2000 Schumacher changed to their own oversize hex drive. They aren't compatible with each other and there is no way to convert them over.
